Red Roof Inn South University

First time to MI and I was not impressed with this hotel at all. Walked in to the room and there was a funny odor. Even though it looks as if they upgraded the décor, it was still a sketchy motel shell. I would not recommend this hotel to people. The staff seemed helpful and polite, but need to work on their housekeeping; I had to wipe everything done with Lysol wipes before I decided to touch anything. The toilet and shower room were extremely small. Air conditioning unit was dusty and dirty, we could not put the air on because we did not want to inhale the dust and diet cover it. The upside was there was a refrigerator and a microwave, which made keeping our water and good cold, but needed to be cleaned before we used either.

So far, I am 5 minutes into my room and I can’t breathe. They switched us rooms. The ceiling was falling off. Gross gross place. The furniture was all scuffed up. The beds where hard as hell (and I like firm!) I am pretty sure I would have brought critters home. The phone didn’t work either.
The two stars? The people at the front desk where so nice. Those poor people.

The room was clean and they appeared to have remolded recently. Nothing fancy but the price is great. The room and beds were comfortable. If you want a clean place on the cheap it is a good choice.

I stayed here when my friends and I embarked on our annual trip to a Nebraska Husker football game. By our normal hotel room standards for these trips, this place was a twelve star, primarily because no visible prostitution was happening on the premises and we didn’t hear a single gunshot. Alas, our ever-​increasing age and income is making it less tempting to try to cram eight guys in a single $ 25/​night room, so we’re slowly moving up to the likes of this place (and the occasional RV).
There are some businesses that I don’t really know how to summarize. Hotels fall into this category. I will now spout out my disjointed thoughts on this place like James Joyce with Asperger’s.
The rooms were clean. Their decorations were dated but everything individually was clean. There were mini-​fridges. The TV remote was terrible. The shower was passable. It had good temperature but the water was very hard and needle-​like. The continental breakfast was thin in terms of selections. There was cereal, a waffle maker, English muffins, but no fruit that I could find. Not even bananas. The parking lot was spacious. I had no interactions with the staff so I can’t really comment on their friendliness or helpfulness. Either this place has a pool or the hotel that shares the same parking lot needs to fix their security door; either way you have access to a pool while staying here. It is easy to get this hotel mixed up with the neighboring hotel; one of our party was furious at us because he thought we ditched him for breakfast until we made him realize that he went to the wrong hotel to consume his morning meal. Related: the neighboring hotel sounds like it has a better breakfast offering. Prices were good and it was only a short cab ride to downtown Ann Arbor, making everything we needed to do quite accessible.

I stayed here this past weekend. The room was what I expected. No complaints, …except bed bugs! 24 hours later my arms were covered in itchy red bumps. Just thought I’d be courteous and let you Unilocalers know.

It’s a cheap hotel. It was clean and well maintained, and the staff was friendly. Also, free wifi. Was it a mind-​blowing experience? No. Was it about 900 times better than any place that cheap I’ve ever been before. Oh yeah.
Useful hint for out-​of-​towners: it is a pretty easy walk from the hotel to the Michigan Flyer shuttle to the airport.

Stayed here on business, very affordable and i felt the room was nice and was clean. Plenty of room and a comfortable place to sleep. Continental breakfast left something to be desired and there very little within short distance of the location to do with the exception of the mall. But i’d definitely stay again if i’m in Ann Arbor on business.

Not to bad for cheap stay. Definitely one of the better Red Roof Inns I’ve stayed at. Clean room. Updated accoutrements. Flat screen tv. And right across the street from the mall and several restaurants. Friendly if slightly less than knowledgeable staff. Would stay here again.

This is definitely a solid affordable option. I wish it was closer to campus, but that was the only negative. The room was clean and affordable. The breakfast was a continental breakfast as advertised with cereals, breads, juices, coffees, etc. If I was to visit U of Michigan again I would stay here.

Standard «concrete motel», remodeled well in «90’s bachelor» with modern chrome, dark marble countertops and black furniture. Clean. +1.
Portable-​toilet style occupied/​unoccupied signs outside of door deadbolts tell would-​be thrives the perfect time to rob your room.
Be sure to note 11 a.m. Checkout time or old woman in a parka will drop by to berate you in a thick (Russian?) accent. –2.

I was a bit wary when we drove up to the Red Roof Inn… We mostly stay in Crowne Plaza/​Radisson/​Holiday Inn so I was a little worried that I’d have to sleep in the bath to avoid bed bugs or the likes…
Not the case at all. It has been recently refurbished, it looks great! Flat screen TV, fast WIFI, lovely décor and colours! I must admit it took me by surprise!
Lovely experience overall… wouldn’t be as scared next time!

Well, it wasn’t that bad. As cheap hotels go, this isn’t bad, but not good either! The room was updated and mostly clean. There were interesting stains on the carpeting and the chair. The bathroom was clean and updated. The tub/​shower was noisy and felt as if it were going to break any minuet. The tub was scratched up quite a bit and felt like you were going to fall through. I would give this place 3 stars, but there was a cockroach in our tub. So, this hotel is good for overnight, but nothing else!

The staff was friendly and helpful, I was able to check in very early. The room was updated and clean. The location was quiet and the price was reasonable. This isn’t a fancy hotel, but simple, clean, ac worked a little too well, nice tv and water pressure/​heat was great and free wifi! I was also excited to learn you can bring pets with you at no extra charge. I will definitely keep them in mind the next time I want to bring my pup with me :)

I am too old to stay at a hotel this sketchy.
Pros: It was only $ 100 to stay on a football Saturday.
Cons: Paper thin walls, creepy stains on the walls and mattresses.
It was like crashing on some nasty porch couch in the student slums, but with a continental breakfast.

The staff was very friendly, but the building’s beat and the A/​C units are… a problem. They’re mildewy, make your room stink, and I don’t think they’re sealed to prevent a multitude of beetles from entering the room. It’s also pretty poorly laid out, and virtually impossible to see from State Street.
I did like free coffee & tea 24 – 7, and there were always apples & bananas in the morning. Frankly, If you need a place for under $ 40 a night, I think there are better options in the area.
