Casal’s at Clarendon is a full service Salon and Spa specializing in advanced Hair Color and Cutting techniques. We strive to create a relaxing and calm spa environment. Our non-​tipping salon/​spa offers complimentary value-​added services that sets us apart. We will be honored with your visit, and promise you an experience equal to the Casal/​Aveda mission.

History

Established in 1994.

Thom Ciarniello set out to create a spa and salon that was not only committed to the highest level of service to clients, but also to its staff and the community. A place where clients could unwind from the stresses of the outside world and professionals could grow in their field and blossom into artists.

Thom’s vision came to life in 1994 when Casal’s dé Spa and Salon opened in Canfield, Ohio as an innovative salon offering the latest in spa and salon services. The company has flourished since then and opened the Casal Aveda Institute in Austintown, Casal’s dé Spa and Salon in Howland, an Aveda Institute in Las Vegas and the newest salon location, Casal’s de Spa and Salon in Arlington, VA.

Since day one, Casal’s has operated as a departmentalized salon and spa where only the best professionals practice in their areas of expertise. Every Monday morning our salon is closed for advanced education classes for our staff where they continue to master their specialized skills.

William has over 21 years of experience as a stylist, and a color specialist. He has attended advanced courses all over the US and Europe with Aveda and Vidal Sassoon. As a former Aveda Purefessional, William is well skilled in the art of hair color and his technical placement is impeccable. The guest’s experience is the number one priority for William.

William also specializes in texture services at our salon.

William attended the Art Institute of San Francisco where he studies photography. William has travelled to such places as Paris, Spain, Argentina, and Italy to pursue his passion for photography.

After several years at another salon, I tried Casal’s given the incredible Unilocal reviews and recommendations by friends, and I was certainly not disappointed. The salon has a great vibe to it, busy and upbeat, yet also cozy and friendly. I got my hair cut by Liz, and Therese did my color/​highlight. Both stylists were amazing. friendly, knowledgeable and experts at what they do. It took me a while to get in for an appointment, which is a solid indicator of the demand of this salon. They are worth the wait. From a price point, it is worth every penny and actually slightly less expensive than my other salon given the no-​tipping policy.
The massage, mini facial and no-​tipping policy on top of the incredible stylists have won me over!

When I moved to the Arlington area from NYC, I struggled to find a salon and stylist I liked. Enter Casal’s! I booked an appointment based on colleagues’ recommendations and have been happily seeing Stephanie for cuts since. The salon is welcoming, clean and has a great atmosphere. They always see me on time and everyone is nice.
The added benefits of a massage and mini facial make me look forward to my appointment!
The no-​tipping policy feels a little strange after coming from a stylist in Manhattan — but it’s really nice not to have to figure out how much cash to give.
It’s hard to get an appointment here because it’s so awesome!

If you are reading this, you are already aware of the no-​tipping policy. Honestly, with tips, my old favorite salon comes out to be the same as Casal’s
That being said. having the massage and the minifacial (plus makeup touchup if you want) is wonderful. Courtney does a great job with haircuts, and I have always liked the color ideas Katie does. Parking can be a PITA, but worth it.

I would go here for quick, efficient hair cuts, not colors.
Pros:
— they run on a timely schedule

Cons:
— Expensive… which makes sense w/​no tipping & extra services
— Kinda blah; they don’t do really exciting, trendy, or different hairstyles
— get the feeling that you’re being rushed out sometimes
I’ve been at least 5 – 6 times and had a generally positive experience.
Last visit, Chris did my color. I wouldn’t recommend him. He got annoyed when I asked for some lighter highlights, complaining that my appointment didn’t allow enough time for that. He agreed to do them, though. 2 hours later, my hair looked exactly the same. Nothing like the 2 – 3 shades lighter I wanted, showed him pictures of, and picked out from the example colors. I told Chris it didn’t look much lighter and he said «oh, it’s going to fade!» It has been several months. My hair hasn’t faded.
I’m looking for a new salon now. I might return if I’m in dire need of a quick cut.

I wanted a very different hair color (silver/​purple) and was very nervous about it, but Julia did an amazing job. The end result turned out better than I had anticipated! I could not be more pleased and have been getting compliments left and right! Thanks Julia!

Ended up coming here based on all the great reviews and the proximity to my apartment. I was able to get an appointment with Sarah because she had a cancelation. She was great! Friendly and easy to talk to. I was able to tell her what I didn’t want in my hair cut and she didn’t do it! She gave me the perfect amount of layers and angled the front nicely. I told her I wanted an inch off and she did that. I’ve had too many stylist that gave me crazy amount of layers or thinning of my hair. I can’t stand when stylist thin out my hair because it gets so frizzy.
I was pleasantly surprised to get a mini massage and facial complimentary to getting your hair cut. Afterwards she applied some powder and lip gloss. Nice. I love this place!
There’s also a no tipping policy which is nice too. Overall, same price as other salons because of the no tipping.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this salon! Let’s start from the beginning. When you walk in, you are immediately greeted and offered a beverage. I got hot tea because it was cold. I waited about 5 minutes for my stylist Courtney to greet me. She was so kind and welcoming! We went to her chair and discussed the cut and style I wanted for my hair. Then she gave me a tour of the salon. Here is where it gets good… You get a complimentary 10 minute back massage before your haircut! Then when you are getting your hair washed, you get a mini facial!
My haircut is perfect. The layers look so great! I will definitely be coming back. Best salon I have been to in northern Virginia!

It took me two months to grow out a horrendous cut and color (even after a master stylist tried to fix it!) at Lorraine Aprile’s Salon in Old Town Alexandria. It was worth the wait.
Sarah fixed my horrible cut. She’s wonderful. I have fine, thick blonde hair. Her layers are the best; my hair feels light and is easy to style myself.
Therese did my partial highlights with some lowlights, and the color is not brassy and looks very natural. Her assistant, Brittany (?) blew it dry into a style I’d never had before and I felt fabulous leaving for an event that night.
Also, you can take the Metro to Clarendon and it’s right there, or if you have an early morning appointment, you might get a spot in their lot around the back.
Highly recommend! Oh, and it’s an Aveda salon where they give you a short hand and back massage, as well as a facial! And no tips! They deserve any tips they get, though.
Also, major plus: the lighting is the kind that makes everyone look REALLY GOOD. Smart business, right there.

Can’t believe that I should discover the best salon in Clarendon — just as I am leaving for a while! It’s an Aveda salon and has my recommendation for it’s warm ambience and overall experience; the cost of a haircut includes a mini massage and facial — which is terrific. Very unexpected and, when you are in the middle of a move, very welcome!

Went based on Unilocal reviews and am go glad I did! I was looking for something affordable in the area — I don’t do color and $ 85 just seems like too much for a 3 inch cut. The price here is great, especially since they discourage tipping. I booked my appointment online (which I love) with Courtney for $ 55.
The place is warm and welcoming. When Courtney greeted me, she gave me a tour and then discussed what I wanted done, which she responded very well to. I got the massage, hair wash, and mini facial, all of which were great. They seem to have a water pressure issue when multiple people are getting their hair washed at once, but the stylists were aware of it so that was fine with me.
The cut and dry were both great, along with the makeup touch up afterwards. The place was very busy and usually suggest booking your next appointment when you’re there in about 6 – 8 weeks. I have long hair so that seemed a little soon to me, but explains why they book up so quickly. Although I did not book my next appointment then, I will definitely return!

Best salon EVER! I’ve lived in NYC and Boston and recently moved to Arlington, Va. Having been to many salons I can honestly say that my hair has never looked this good. I search for salons based on their reviews for blonde highlights and found this salon by doing so. All the reviews said go to Therese for the best blonde highlights and she did not disappoint! Not only is a partial highlight only $ 125, but that includes a wash and blow dry, massage, facial, and complimentary makeup refresh. I will recommend this salon to everyone! Best service and best results!

Liz does such an amazing job cutting my hair — I have fine hair, and sometimes stylists want to put in too many layers, making it actually look thinner at the ends. The first time I went in, Liz completely understood where I was coming from and gave me exactly what I asked for. I’ve gone back to her multiple times since then, and she’s always done just as good of a job as the first time.
Katie did my balayage highlights. I asked for something natural looking that was low maintenance — I should probably go back soon, but even after a few months, I still get compliments on my color! Like Liz, she listened to what I wanted and delivered!
As other people have mentioned, a mini massage and facial are included. I love those bonuses mostly because it makes my time there feel more about relaxation and less about my split ends :)
The only downside to Casal’s is that you have to book an appointment pretty far in advance — but that really is just a reflection of their high demand because of the great job they do! Definitely recommend this salon!

Finding a new place to do my blonde highlights has always been a challenge when I move to a new city. I literally flew home to Florida to have my hair done at Easter. With all that being said… I LOVE THIS SALON!!! A few reasons why:
First they go through everything with you when you get there. You also get a back and hand massage before you start your services.
Second they give you a mini facial while you’re getting your hair washed.
Third they offer to do a mini makeup session after with Aveda products. I declined today but would be open to it in the future.
Finally, they are a no tipping salon. I hate the feeling that I have when I tip bc I never know how much to give. Their theory is that your tip comes back as a repeat appointment or a good review. I’ve done both. I’m booked for my third appointment in August.
Therese does my hair. She’s a genius and understands my needs. I told her I want to continue to be blonde and my hair has come out awesome TWICE. One of the other assistants will wash your hair and blow you out and I love that they take their time. No rushing. It takes me three hours start to finish for my hair. I like to be comfortable and this is a good place.
There is a parking lot next door which is easy or street parking. For first timers it’s next to the big building with the revolving door. Next to spice restaurant.
I’ll be going back again as long as I’m living in the area. They book up fast so I suggest calling ahead.

This might be my first Unilocal let down. I chose Casal’s de Spa & Salon based on excellent reviews (7+ years in DC and still searching for that amazing hair stylist…). I went for a pretty simple shoulder-​length cut. I don’t know whether it just wasn’t a good day for my stylist but I was really not pleased with the result. I asked for layers and there were barely any. It looked like something I could do by myself at home if I simply took scissors and cut 4 inches off.
There was a cute little girl in the chair next to me getting her haircut as well. She was so excited and kept asking her stylist all kinds of hair questions. Just when I was going to comment how adorable that was, my stylist said to me: «I don’t know why you would ever have children if you can get a dog that can’t talk». Oh? Really? Awkwaaaard.

I’ve been going to this salon for a couple of years now, but I finally decided to write a review because I like them so much that I want them to open a new location! Hopefully at the Mosaic District or one of the other new retail spaces near the Dunn Loring Metro.
I’ve decided that I’m still going to drive into Arlington from Fairfax because Casals has the best overall experience. And I really mean experience. It’s not just about the haircut (or whatever other service you use). I like that there’s a no tipping policy to alleviate the stress of figuring out how much to tip. I like that there’s a mini massage and mini facial that’s included because it just feels so great. The makeup touch up is also fantastic because you can walk out still looking put together.
There’s a free parking lot in the back (if you can get a spot). Parking can be annoying in Clarendon and I hate paying for it.
The online appointment service also makes is so easy to make an appointment. Unfortunately, I don’t get my hair cut as frequently as I should and I’ve used a couple of different stylists. Sarah B and Lydia are both great and the cuts have been consistent. $ 75 is a great price for the all-​inclusive experience. I wouldn’t want to pay anymore than that though… (Cause then you may as well pay a la carte)

Casal’s is definitely the best salon I have been to and I have never had a bad experience there. The staff are extremely friendly and accomodating throughout the entire visit.
I moved here from New York about 3 years ago and had always had the same person do my hair (I have blonde hair and get highlights) since I was in Middle School. I was super nervous to try a new salon but a friend recommended I go to Therese for my color and I was so thrilled with the results. My highlights came out better than they ever had. She really knows what she is doing and my hair looks natural every time.
Every appointment comes with a stress reliever mini massage, mini facial, and makeup touch up and the salon has a no tipping policy! From what I’ve found, the pricses are similiar to anywhere else you would go that doesn’t offer these fun perks.
For my haircuts, I usually go to Sarah. She is fantastic and offers her opinion on what works best. She does a fantastic job as well.
I have recommended Casal’s to many friends and will continue to do so in the future.
Tip: They are very busy and evening and weekend appointments book up very quickly. Expect to wait about one month to get a color appointment during those times. I usually just make my next appointment when I’m there so that I can lock one in.

I came back to Casal’s last month for the «makeover» that I wanted back when I first wrote this review. This time, I read most of the Unilocal reviews and went with Therese to cut and style my hair.
I asked for a balayage/​ombré and a substantial cut on my long black permed hair. I wanted a really fun, edgy, fashionable haircut with my permed parts removed. She used three different colors on me to create more dimension. The entire process took a little less than 2 hours. I came back a week later to create a more dramatic look, but again it wasn’t what I was hopping for. My friend appropriately said it looks very «90s». (So much for a modern, cool, ombré color and cut!)
The end result is OK. Again, nothing special. This was the first time I got my hair dyed professionally and I am disappointed that is wasn’t as amazing as I was hoping. My hair looks orange-​y… Maybe this salon doesn’t know how to work with darker/​ethnic hair… I don’t know! But I can’t come here again.
