Susan G Komen Race For the Cure

Perhaps one of the most hypocritical of the major coporate charities. I would never give them my money. You can’t be pretending to help women while blacklisting orgs like Planned Parenthood on the one hand (who provide a great deal of front-​line healthcare for many women) and then allying with hydrofracking companies that CAUSE breast cancer on the other.
Yes, breast cancer is bad. But put your money somewhere that’s not just corporate pinkwashing to make people feel good about the IDEA (but not the reality) of helping women.

Whatever you call them, we know two things are true:
1) Yes, they are fantastic, not just mine but all of them out there.
2) They are prone to the most common cancer in women worldwide, and DC has one of the highest incidence of invasive breast cancer in the U.S.
My epidemiologist/​public health side has to showcase that fact. So to raise awareness, the Race for the Cure series raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship, and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure series is part of the largest series of 5K runs/​fitness walks in the world, which is why I am surprised that I am the first to review this event.
For a charity race, this is one of the best organized races I have attended to date. The race itself is a breeze, around the museums, on a fantastic June day. Excellent music, meet up and corral areas are easy to find. Years ago they heeded the advise of runners and added seperate starts for runners and walker. This plan was not foolproof and as a runner this is not really a great competitive race being there are a lot of walkers in the way.
The plusses: This is the one race where you can unabashedly overdose on the color pink, and the sponsors are fantastic. You can also take heart in noting that 75% of the income from the race goes to help fund breast health education and screening programs in the local community (note what I said about DC’s incidence rate).
Get out there and run. Or walk.
