Established in 1977.

Iris began as a custom black and white photo lab after owners, Brigid &

Ralph Burns moved to Asheville from New Orleans, LA. Iris added

a photo gallery within a short time after opening — becoming one of

the first and only photo galleries bringing outside exhibitors to the area

while also offering workshops, and gallery talks in conjunction with

exhibitions. We also

Within a few years of opening, Iris expanded to add photographic retail

Crystal archive paper using the Agfa Dlab –2 Plus printer. We still offer

custom black and white developing, E-6 slide processing, and 1-Hour

Meet the Business Owner

Brigid B.

Business Owner

I have been an avid photographer for the past 30 years, having actively

exhibited my work throughout the Asheville area and the Southeast. Currently, I have work included in an exhibition at the Mobile Museum

of Art called «Shoot’n Southern: Women Photographers Past and Present» as well as work included in the Handmade In America Craft Showroom in June at the North Carolina Arboretum. While working full-time as co-owner of Iris Photo, I have maintained a studio as a multi-media artist including painting, photography, and mixed media.

I was one of the founding members of Cinematique, a non-profit board

which brought alternative or non-commercially available films to the

Asheville area and served on the board for 19 years. I have also been

active in Sister Cities International, on the San Cristobal de las Cassas

Committee. My interests are travel and hiking.

My partner in the business, Ralph, has also been an avid photographer who’s taught and exhibited internationally.
