Helga’s German Restaurant & Deli

Not sure why the sign on the door says they are open till 9 if they are closed before 8:30. It’s a shame because I really wanted some good German food but they never seem to be open so I guess I’ll go to Westword’s #1 German spot instead of #2.

Went here for the first time around noon on a Tuesday with some co workers. I was immediately impressed by the atmosphere — so open and inviting! You definitely feel like you’ve entered a different world.
We were seated right away and immediately greeted. After taking our orders we were served bread that was tangy and delicious. I ordered the vegetable plate which includes 4 sides and an order of potato pancakes. I went with salad, sauteed squash, kroketten, potato soup and potato pancakes, yum! Maybe I overdid it on the potatoes but I was happy. I actually could have gotten away with splitting this meal with another person, it was quite a bit of food.
It was busy during this time but the restaurant is spacious and it never got loud. I’ll go back for the reasonable prices, good portions and friendly service!

Let me start by saying how impressed I am with everyone that works here. They know me by name and even know my order everytime I come in.
If you have time you need to stop by Helgas and have some fine German brew along with some great food.

Good food! Potato salad & strudel are PERFECT! Beer selection is great. Homemade mustard is worth buying to take home.

This is a dining experience I won’t be repeating. There were some bright spots, however. The waitstaff was very good and our server was terrific. The house vinegarette I’m the salad was delicious. One of us said the sauerkraut was excellent. I’m afraid that is it for the plus side.
I ordered a chicken dish served on spätzle. It has bee a long time (not long enough, however) since I tasted canned mushrooms, but there they were in a tasteless flour gravy that was over the entire dish. The spätzle was also tasteless and smothered in this awful flour drenched gravy.
Another of us ordered some sort of meat filled items similar to tortellini, I am unsure of the name and they were tasteless and served in a lot of brown watery soup. Awful.
Too bad as German food can be interesting, but Helga’s isn’t the place to find it.

Canned food, unknowledgeable wait staff regarding the menu, overcharged on an item (showed proof) and waitress was combative and unwilling to change the receipt… blah this place left a terrible taste in my mouth. Literally.

Stopped in here for a beer and loved it. While the beer is a little more expensive that other places, they have a great variety of German beers. We got a pretzel with our drinks, which came with spicy mustard and a pickle. The staff is great and the food looked and smelled wonderful. Can’t wait to go back for dinner!

We went here as a party of 7 for lunch. Were seated, waited 10 minutes for the kid to take our drink orders. Waited, waited a bit longer, he took our orders, waited. He came back 4 – 5 minutes later to clarify sides that he got wrong. Waited… an hour later after not seeing or hearing from anyone, I tracked down the manager, Katia, asked about the status of our orders and was informed they were busy.
Waited a bit more and low and behold, some bread showed up at our table, 5 minutes later the first dish came out. Tough ribs that had obviously been sitting around long enough for the gravy to get a skin.
12 minutes later the manager came by to tell us they were making or order «a priority». Told her that this was unacceptable, and she offered to comp desserts. Unfortunately we didn’t have another couple of hours to wait for some mythical deserts to arrive when we hadn’t seen lunch yet.
Walked.

Good, traditional German food, but slow. I will go back, but only when I have a lot of time. The wait staff is ok, but the food is slow coming out of the kitchen.

Really loved the food! The red cabbage was delicious and the hot mustard is to die for!

My family cooks german food all the time, so i feel pretty qualified to review it.
The beef and barley soup was better than expexted. The beef barely stayed togetjer and the flavor was good.
I ordered the breaded chicken schnitzel and what i got was 2 big pieces. They were juicy and the brkwn gravy was a nice compliment to them.
The red cabbage was not as sweet as i an used to but still very flavorful.
The spazel fried with garlic was as good as expected. My family usually nakes it with butter, salt. And pepper, so i went out on a limb.
The gernan cheesecake wasnt what i expected. What came out was caramel in a fancy design, new york style cheesecake, and a side of whilped ceeam. The texture was perfect. Most cheesecake is a little dry. This one was creamy and moist.
The deli next door wasnt what I wxpected. I saw the usual german cooking stuff but no kinder chocolate which is odd because it is so common in Germany.
I have to say this is one of the best German restaurants i have been to.
Most of the service was pretty quick and there was an accordian player walking around but he never came to our table.

We went yesterday around 2:30pm for their early Oktoberfest. Brought our kids 5 and 7 for their first time. The beer, food and accordion music was great. We went early to avoid the crowd and it was good timing for us. I ordered the traditional schnitzel chicken and it was very tender, no fat to be found. My husband ordered the Jäger schnitzel and it was delicious too. We had the preztels with our beer sampler and they were a bit tough. We have been looking for a good german restaurant in denver and this place is great. We will definitely be back.

After traveling to Germany two summers ago I never found a Restaurant hat served authentic German food until now. I have dined at Helga’s three times now and each experience was fabulous. The staff are always very inviting and are well educated on the menu.
Food. The food is wonderful. From appetizers to sides nothing is below par. The schnitzel is flavorful and cooked to perfection. The portions are also large and good to split. My favorite appetizer is the large pretzel with mustard because it is so soft and filling… Would not want to eat it alone.
I encourage you to try out this restaurant!

Another really good German restaurant. A nice little ‘bier garten’ is out front. They have a deli inside that has quite a selection of authentic German food that you can take home. I highly recommend the Bier Schenken & the Mettwurst. They also always a few choices for Leberwurst too.
The restaurant has a good selection of German dishes, but some of the sides seem geared more towards Americans … the Kartoffelkroketten (Potato Croquettes) are fried and the dumplings are not boiled. The Spätzle is average, but that is good here in the US. The combination plates that allow you to choose a few options are always an easy choice to a great dish.
They have an inside bar should you just want to stop by for a beer and you can eat at the bar too. Stop by a few times and they will start recognizing you by name. The staff has always been helpful and quite friendly. If you speak German, then you may need to get someone from the back, but they will come out and chat as well as take into account a request you may have to tweak a dishes to your desire.

Wanted to try some authentic german food. Found this place. Décor I thought could be more German. Had the Jaeger schnitzel with red cabbage and potato salad. I would recommend this dish. They had a gluten free menu which is awesome. The deli/​gift shop I wish had more authentic items for sale. Over all I will return here. I would recommend it to other folks.

This was my first visit to Helga’s and my first time trying German food. So I’m no expert on German food. But I know what I like and I thought it was pretty good. I had the breaded schnitzel with side salad and potato salad. The side salad was boring but the rest was good. I will go back and try their other dishes.
It was quite slow for Sunday lunch. The décor was German but not over the top. I think it would be fun to do more with that.
The service was okay, not great. The waitress spilled a little bit of tea on the table and never cleaned it up. And my teaspoon was too short and i had to stick my fingers into my tea to get it. But she was nice and pretty quick.

When we arrived in Denver, we had a while before we checked into our AirBnB room so we looked around for a place to eat on the way there. Luckily, we found Helga’s.
The ambiance was inviting and the wait staff greeted us promptly. They were attentive and pleasant and everything you expect from good servers.
My wife had the Jäger Schnitzel with Brussel sprouts and pan-​fried potatoes while I opted for the bratwurst platter with one smoked brat and one Thüringer, German potato salad and sauerkraut.
The schnitzel was excellent; cooked to perfection with a *delicious* onion and mushroom sauce. The smoked brat was ok but the Thüringer brat was superb.
I also had a Hofbräu Oktoberfest which, as you would expect, was wonderful.
My only complaint was that the mustard, while spicy, wasn’t hot enough for me. Then again, I *love* overly spicy foods so it should suffice for most people. ;-)
I recommend Helga’s without reservation. Enjoy!

Been here once before for lunch. Returned for the atmosphere, great service, and great German dishes.
This time we came with the family only to find out they are very kid friendly. High chair with its own tray, kids menu, and crayons. All the more reason to return again.

The sauerkraut is done very well. I could eat an entire bowl of it all by itself.
The Bratwurst sampler is tasty and I the perfect size for an appetizer! I came alone and finished the whole thing + beer= pretty satisfied.
The 15% service charge is real… even for a single diner.
I did ask about it… it goes to the house so that they can pay their employees more… its not a tip. Its a bit weird but, its their policy. He actually said the wait staff was paid $ 8/​hr.

When my Dad was a young man in the Army, the first place he was stationed was in Germany (he was there while they were building the Berlin Wall). He acquired a strong taste for German cuisine (and even brought back a German bride for a short-​lived marriage). During my childhood, he would occasionally make a variety of German dishes including various wursts, hot potato salads, and spätzle (and a failed science experiment in Sauerbraten that kept most of us out of the basement for several days). Although this food was a significant departure from our standard fare, most of these dishes seemed delicious and exotic to me. I have sampled German food at many places over the years, and some have been quite good, while others have been fairly bad. It was not until I went to Helga’s, that I finally had German food that reminded me of the stuff my Dad used to make.
The food at Helga’s strikes me as old-​school, German home-​cooking. I pictured someone’s elderly German grandmother in the back churning out these dishes. On this visit, I started with the trio of summer salads. One was simply pickled beets and onions. It was extremely tasty and reminded me that this is by far my favorite way to eat beets. The second one was a traditional creamy cucumber salad, and it was salty and coolly refreshing for a hot day. The last salad was a simple green salad with a sweetish vinaigrette (not bad, but nothing special).
For my main course, I went with the Jäger Schnitzel (I opted for pork), which is a thin cutlet rolled in flour; grilled, then braised in a hunter’s sauce and topped with golden onions and mushrooms. The sauce was a touch salty, but it worked with this dish. The mushrooms were wonderful. The dish really had the appearance (almost slightly sloppy) of home-​cooking. For my sides I went with the spätzle and the braised red cabbage. I opted for pan-​fried spätzle, since I could use the gravy from the schnitzel for dipping. They were excellent (far better than the sad excuses for spätzle one finds at local Octoberfestivals). Good flavor, firm texture, yum! The braised red cabbage was very similar to something my Dad would have made (only he would have added lots of bacon). It was the perfect balance of sweet, salty, and sour.
My service (from Itzel?) was very good. I would gladly come back here again for German comfort food.
