Business Owner
Ying Chen founded Ying Corp. in 1980, which opened its first restaurant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, called Great Wall Restaurant. Soon after opening, it gained a 12-star rating from the Fort Wayne Gazette, which described it as «the best restaurant in the city.» The company rapidly started expanding in five states, opening a series of chain restaurants in Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, and Tennessee. By 1985, Ying Corp. had opened its first fast food store in the Chicago Loop, and within five years had 15 restaurants throughout the downtown area.
From 1990 – 2010, the company opened multiple Chicagoland locations of Baisi Thai, Pacific Rim Kitchen and Oysy Sushi. Oysy was acclaimed by the Chicago Tribune as one of the best neo-Japanese restaurants. In his glowing review of Oysy, Tribune food critic Phil Vettel described Mr. Chen as one of Chicago’s last restaurant tycoons. Oysy also earned top ratings in the Zagat in 2004.
