Hand made thick corn tortillas. Excellent salsa, great coffee and migas. I’ve been coming to one Amaya’s, in one location or another, for over 30 years. Love this place!

Cold, hard and fake. OMG! We went for breakfast this morning and it was horrible. Their lunch is so much better. The flour tortillas were cold, hard and fake and the tortillas soup was more like a vegetable soup and it too was cold. Eat breakfast somewhere else, if you want good crispy tacos or enchiladas for lunch or dinner this is the place. I gave them a three because of the two lunch/dinner menu items I mentioned, otherwise breakfast is a 0.

The tortilla soup is sooo scrumptious and its the best cure for a hang over. The dining area is a little tight but service is fast and food is hot

Once again, amayas disappoints !! Ordered taco plate and tortilla soup for take out. Got home and I had 2 dried out tacos, no rice rice no beans nada! Mom said the Soup was okay but I’m still hungry and they charged me 14 dollars I don’t know why I keep trying to eat here. Service is always crappy, u can’t get a seat and the food is always wrong somehow!!!

Service was very good, kept drinks full and chips and salsa were aplenty as well. The food was hot and fresh. You will not leave this place hungry I will tell you that. They give you plenty of food on each plate they make. The food was hot and fresh. The only down side I had was that it could have been seasoned a little more/better. The fajitas didn’t taste all that much like fajitas. But the meal was still good and very reasonable priced

First time here, we came in because of the word Tacos on the building– hoping for something along the lines of torchys. This is just your average Mexican food joint. The interior is lack luster, as was the ground beef in my friends taco, he said the crispy chicken taco was good though. I had the chalupas with shredded chicken, very good but those are hard to mess up. Might go back, might not. Service was meh.

Friends and I have been going to Amaya’s for Sunday breakfast for a long time. Recently though there’s been a staff change which has caused a drastic change that makes long time customers feel unwelcome. We always have a party of 6 to 8 people, which hadn’t been a problem until a new person began assigning seating. We usually get to the restaurant at 10am on Sunday mornings and may have a 10 – 15 minute wait but that’s no longer the case. Last week we waited about 30 minutes, though there were several vacant tables. It appeared that there weren’t enough staff to clean tables and seat customers. Today, we arrived at 9:45 thinking we could beat the rush. When we signed up on the list, we were told we would have a 15 minute wait for a party of six which is acceptable. In the past the staff would put two tables together so the group of six could sit, but this time they didn’t; there were four vacant tables that could have been moved together to accommodate, but the person assigning tables gave them to smaller parties as they walked in the door. The person assigning tables sat one customer at a table for four though there were two tables that could have been placed together for our party of six. We waited 45 minutes to be seated, and that was at a place where the staff moved two tables together. Once we got seated, our favorite waiter, Felix, gave us great service and we had a good time. Though the food is still a good deal, a restaurant that allows returning customers to wait that length of time while there are empty tables do not show they value returning customers. We have decided to take a break for awhile and try a different breakfast restaurant. Maybe if we return there will be a different staff person taking names.

I’ve had better Tex-Mex, just an average place. They have daily specials for $ 6.99. My friend ordered the verde enchiladas with chicken and they left off the chicken. The salsa is pretty hot so make sure you have your drink before diving in. I ordered the nachos and the chips were nice and crispy but the cheese wasn’t my favorite.

Nope. Not coming back. Shit service, cramped, bland food. I’d give it 0⁄5 stars if I could. Note to Unilocal: please make that an option.

I ordered breakfast tacos from the«to-go» area one morning. The staff was nice but it took almost thirty minutes for me to receive my order of two potato, egg, and cheese tacos. The tortillas were quite thick and filling, but the overall taste wouldn’t bring me back for more visits.

Stick to the Tacos/Chalupas. They are called Taco Village after all. I ordered the Deluxe Dinner which came with a crispy beef taco, a meatless chalupa, a cheese enchilada, a beef tamale, rice, and beans. Kym ordered the chicken chalupas. First the deluxe dinner, the taco was delicious and stuffed to the max with filling. The chalupas here are huge and I will get into those more in a moment. The enchilada was not very good, it was greasy, the cheese was cheap, and it was all drowned in too much chili. The tamale was actually really big but it just got lost under all of the cheese and chili, there would be potential here if I just got the tamale with half the chili sauce and no cheese. Rice and beans are throw away items at best. Second the chicken chalupas, these things are massive. The plate comes with 2 of them and they take up the entire plate. They are really tasty too especially with their salsa on top. Kym said she had never been beat by a chalupa plate anywhere before and she could only eat 1 and I ate half of the other. Flavor + Bang for Your Buck you cannot go wrong here. I really liked the salsa but considering the quality of all of the taco shells and tortillas I expected better chips. All in all I will come back again as I want to try their nachos, but I will be avoiding the enchiladas.

It’s not totally a patio. I mean, it is a patio, by all sense of the word. But it’s RIGHT next to the movie theater, which I’m sure has it’s appeal, but it was completely surrounded by concrete.(Which I get, that’s how it goes… but it doesn’t have that relaxed patio feel.) NEEDED queso. I love The Queso. I could eat it at every meal. I had two or three bites and was done. You know the stuff in the plastic container you get at the fair, or movie theater(…)? Yeah, it’s like that. My first words were, «this is like it’s from a can.» Even with a bit of the salsa, still not good. Our server was fine. He seemed a bit overwhelmed, but he did fine. Not spectacular, but fine. I had an enchilada and a chalupa. They were both just mediocre. My margarita was good. The chips were fine, and I liked the salsa – kinda needed it to add to the non-flavor. I was hoping for so much more. The enchilada did look like it should have been delicious. I’m really on the line of two or three stars, but I feel like if you’re in South Austin, you’ve gotta have stellar Tex-Mex.

For me, none of the Amayas have been as good since they left the Capital Plaza location. This one is OK but feels too crowded and cramped. The cheese enchiladas were good. One problem, after I dipped a chip in the salsa and put it in my mouth there was something there that seemed a little too chewy. It was a small rubber band like the ones I’ve seen in kids’ mouths who have had orthodontic work done. This set the tone for the whole visit and unfortunately, management did nothing to set it right. I can’t really recommend this spot.

Came here on a Saturday morning before 11am and it was packed!!! Tucked away between the movie theater and a chinese buffet, Amaya’s is killing it with the amount of space they offer to South Austinites both inside the restaurant and outside on the patio. If you plan on coming here to meet with friends and do some drinking and eating, be sure to call ahead just to give staff a heads up. They will put tables and chairs together for you and reserve a spot if they know you are on the way in. The patio outside is the perfect space to sit, relax, drink some margaritas or some tasty beer on tap all while you wait for time to pass before your movie. The patio area shares the space with the movie theater patio but there is a lot of space and Amaya’s patio is fenced off with a short fence. I don’t see why there aren’t so many people with large groups coming to this location. It has plenty of space, not as much as the north location, and don’t let the shopping mall area fool you — the drinks here are stiff and the parking is plentiful and safe.

I had the Friday special of grilled tilapia served over rice. The fish was cooked perfectly and seasoned great, I did add some salt, but that’s a personal problem ;) They were busy,(Friday, lunch) but our food came out quickly and we made it to our movie right on time. I would absolutely plan a dinner and a movie date around this place!

Went to this place for lunch on a Sunday with some pretty high expectations. I’m from the valley and have eaten a ton of tex-mex food. Received chips/salsa, ordered queso to go with it. Nothing spectacular at all, literally straight from the can it seemed. Ordered the puffy tacos since that is what this place is known for. The combo plate I ordered was two tacos with rice and beans. When the food arrived it /looked/like it had some potential, but once I tasted it– not so much. I put salsa on the rice and beans and they must have already been at room temp because the salsa cooled both sides way down. Flavorless rice and beans here. Tried to add salsa to save it, no dice. The tacos were warm, but too much lettuce. The meat is masked even when biting at the bottom of the taco. I don’t typically rate places based off of looks, and I’m not here, but there is something to be said about the bar area. It’s hilarious, and very makeshift-. It’s a decent space with outdoor seating, next to a busy movie theater. The traffic is probably high enough, and the Southpark Meadows crowd probably doesn’t know the difference between good and bad tex mex. It wasn’t horrible, but nothing I’d visit again.

I’ve been going to the north location for many years. The fact that I love this place almost more than life, is not a great thing for my diet. I can now run to their south location. Oh but I’ll die happy. The south location is a bit more intimate than north, but I prefer it this way. Still my all time favorite Mexican food place in central Texas. Cheers

What a disappointment. I love the north location. The margaritas(top shelf) had sickly sweet sours mix that ruined the high end tequila and Cointreau. The salsa was hot without any accompanying flavor development, and the taco meat was bland and under seasoned. The zucchini enchiladas were lessened due to a lame red sauce that was simultaneously under seasoned and burned in flavor. The beans were unremarkable, as was the rice. Is it just new restaurant growing pains or are there serious issues with the chef? Is anyone tasting what they put out? The new facility is ugly and not inviting, as well. I guess the owners figure the long lines mean they don’t have to spend money on a pleasant interior. Will wait 6 months before returning. Did not enjoy my dinner.
