Compass Bank

I used to bank with Compass for about six years. Then I got married and consolidated my money with my spouse at USAA. Left this account open with about fifty bucks in there. Out of the blue, I get an email from them saying I have an overdraft. I haven’t been writing checks or anything on this account for over a year. I go into this branch and offer to settle up straight away. They claim the Texas Gas Utility withdrew funds from my account and it overdrafted by $ 7.00. Do you have any idea how much Compass bank charged me for a $ 7.00 overdraft? A HUNDRED BUCKS! I am not joking.
When I asked the highest-​ranking staffer (Manager was not there) how this could even be considered ethical or customer-​friendly, I was told they are a ‘for-​profit’ enterprise. That’s a funny perspective on how to treat the people who are trusting them to handle their savings.
I wouldn’t call Compass a predator. They’re a parasite at best. Search google for «Compass Bank Customer Satisfaction» and you’ll see a sharp contrast between this parasite and customer-​friendly banks like USAA or Frost.

Compass isn’t a terrible bank for everyone but it was for me. Deposits take days to process — even cash. Checks take a week to clear. Banks routinely have a line and I always felt like a number. I looked forward to going to Compass like I looked forward to a colonoscopy.
I switched to Frost Bank and haven’t ever regretted it. They helped me to grow my business from a small business to a bigger small business with support on low interest loans to money to buy a building. Also, any time you call at Frost, you get a person.

This bank will abuse you with hidden charges and try to nickel and dime you at every opportunity. Do not use this bank under any circumstances.

I have been banking with Compass for a long while now (16 years). We have «business preferred» account I have always received good service at the branch on Lamar but it has slowly started to deteriorate. Its now gotten to a all time low as they now have a new branch manager named «Joe».
For the past 3 days i have been trying to get copies of 3 deposits that were made into my account that I need. I have not received any phone call, email etc from anyone at the branch. My assistant called today and they told her they would not send electronically and that we had to come pick it up in person. They also said that they are very short staffed and that they will «get to it when they get to it». Joe also told us that if we did not like that answer then «he will write us a check and close the account». Try 50+ account buddy!
Its a shame that such a long relationship is now going to end. We will be closing all of our accounts and taking our money and business elsewhere. Thanks JOE and BBVA

Have been a customer of Compass Bank for many years. Stopped by this branch to make a couple of deposits and to have a very simple document notarized. I was the only customer in the bank. I asked for someone to notarize the form, I was told he was busy (he was on what seemed like a personal phone call), I was asked to wait. I waited and waited and waited. Then another employee went into his office and they proceeded to have a jolly olé visit — while I waited in the lobby. I went back up to the teller and asked if there was someone else I could see. She said no, so I turned to leave. She called Mr. Jeff Herman and interrupted his social visit. I went into his office and he immediately became an attorney. He reviewed the form (which had been prepared by a title company) and determined that he was not willing to notarize it without his legal department’s review. He expected me to wait for an hour (with my disabled, ill husband in the car) while he played attorney! His only job as a notary is to determine if the person signing the form is indeed the person who is suppose to sign the form. I had given him my driver’s license and I had signed his notary book. He was just upset that a pesky customer had interrupted his social life. NEVER again, will I bother the people who play, instead of working, at this branch!

Their service is horrible! Got stuck in the drive-​thru behind a guy who seemed to be trying to take care of all of his banking business through the drive through. Instead of having the guy go into the lobby to take care of his business, they allowed him to hold up the line. These people really do not know how to treat their customers. I used to be a teller and know that service to the customer should be top priority. Compass Banks seem to be very poorly managed.

Am I the only one that finds this Bank great ‚? it is never busy I go in and come out nobody is ever there no mistakes in banking, Once I even sat in the drive through looking for my pre filled out dposit slip for 20 min no one came. and the girls in there are really sweet.

To start with, I opened my Compass Bank account out of necessity when I brought my paycheck there (it had been issued by Compass), and was told I could either pay an $ 11 service charge to cash THEIR check, or hold up $ 20 for 24hours and open a ‘free’ checking account with them. Any other bank I know of (Chase, W.Farg., BOA, etc.) will honor and cash one of their own checks free of charge — as they should. This policy is manipulative and cheating any employee who happens to work for/​receive a paycheck from a business who mistakenly banks with Compass. I however chose to close my 11mo. old account with them last Thursday not because I was paid with a clearly COUNTERFEIT fifty dollar bill, but because of how Chris, the store manager handled the situation. At no point did I receive any apology whatsoever, nor was any accountability taken for the error which required 3 separate return visits before I was graciously granted non-​Monopoly money. If you’re not aware about counterfeit 50’s and 20’s circulating within the greater Austin area, do be, but more importantly check any and ALL bills you receive from Compass, specifically this location. Chris smugly informed me that my information would be sent to the ‘feds’ as the individual who reported the fraudulent currency, but also told me when asked if I should expect a call from them, «Not unless there was any reason to.» He not only lauded the tellers saying that they would never miss a thing like that, but also implied that I was under suspicion for taking 3.5 days (with a weekend included) to return with the false bill. Granted the tellers at this location are usually friendly, quick and professional, the fact remains that I was, without a shadow of doubt in my mind, issued the bad bill from them. As a manager of a bank who made that careless mistake, you should be nothing short of groveling to that customers feet, immediately replacing the bad bill with a valid one, and making a point not to waste any more of their time. That’s what it means to successfully operate a business and maintain good customer rapport.

I’m going to let you into a little secret. My balance for the past 9 months in my Compass Bank account has been $ 0.01. I figure I’ll close the account when they make up the balance of servicing it from all of their stupid fees and all around lameness. This bank even took 5 days to post a cash deposit into my account. Any other bank would have done this in an instant.
I have since moved on to another bank, but am happy every month I receive my account statement with a penny in it.

I’ve seen better banks in third world countries. My friends and I all signed up for checking accounts here about 7 years ago in order to get these multi-​colored camping chairs (all of which are trashed by now) and I’m the last one who still has an account here.
Usually the tellers are very nice. That is very nice and good and expected. Good job. There have been a few incidents, though. for example, I asked the teller in the drive thru if she could total my deposits for me (simply add them up) and she said no, please drive around, which meant I had to go back to the parking lot, add the list of numbers, and get back into line again. I guess calculator-​service is too big of a perk to offer.
Also, they deposited a check which was expired into my account, and so charged me $ 16 for it. Why charge ME, when they didn’t notice either? Should I charge stupid Compass bank $ 16, too?
One last warning– Compass targets lower-​income customers by offering the ‘free ATM’ crap, but they will stick it to you hardcore if you overdraft. even once. Must be how they make $$$.
I guess it’s my own fault for not switching to another bank a million years ago.
