History

Established in 1997.

EcoClean (originally known as EcoMat) was founded in 1997 with the vision of being a dry cleaner Austin residents could grow to LOVE, not just like. The goal was to have the most green and environmentally friendly dry cleaning service and laundry service Austin had ever seen. Founded by John Henderson, the business had it’s home at 2915 Guadalupe, where its main location still operates.

In 2006 John Dorgan and Conrad Bejarano purchased the business and soon learned what dry cleaning Austin TX style really means. They invested in new technology that was years ahead of that used by other cleaners in Austin.

In 2010 Mark Hess and Kevin Bonfield joined with John and Conrad to expand EcoClean throughout the city and to move from being the best green dry cleaner in Austin to being the best dry cleaner in Austin. Period. With Best Dry Cleaner Austin wins in 2015, 2013 & 2012 and the opening of three new locations, they are well on their way.

Their heart is in the right place but that’s about all. First the staff seems to turn over a lot so no one seems well trained or knowledgeable – I often got five different answers to the same question going in or on the phone. Second, they do have different processes for different kinds of garments but you have to know that (see problem #1 above) and ask for the process you want.
Third, and this is reflected in the negative comments of other reviewers, they will ruin your silk things if you don’t know to ask for their special silk process and whoever is doing the sorting doesn’t know that they have a different process (see problems #1 and #2 above). And I only learned this after I brought back some ruined silk blouses and they said: «Oh you should have asked for the special silk process» !!!
Finally they can’t iron at all – I have never had things returned to me so badly pressed. Bottom line – they are very expensive, very inept, and you are putting your nice things at risk taking them here. It is important to save the environment but if you have to buy new things to make up for their mistakes, I’m not so sure on balance that anything has been saved.

**UPDATE**
I should’ve looked at all my clothes in the store. I just now (4 days later) took the blouses out of the plastic to find that the black silk one has been ruined. There is very noticeable white discoloration on the arms. So very disappointed as I have a «capsule closet» (i.e. about 20 total items in my wardrobe, but all 20 are things that I absolutely love.) Are there any reliable dry cleaners anywhere!!?

Very disappointed with my service here. I was given their name by the woman who did my dress alterations. I showed up on a Friday and mentioned I needed my wedding dress cleaned post bridal portraits and asked what their expected turn around time would be, if they cleaned this type of material, and expected cost. I was answered with, «oh the person who does wedding dress consultations is not in today but will be in on Monday and will call you». I left my dress with them and took my ticket and left all of my contact information. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday rolled around without a phone call. I was fed up by Thursday and call them myself when I got the response, «oh I was about to call you». They then stated that they do not have the right detergents to clean my dress and that I needed to take it to another dry cleaners. I got my dress the next day and they recommended West Bank cleaners who when I arrived told me that they only dry clean wedding dresses after the wedding. Thanks for the terrible recommendation EcoClean and having me waste large amounts of time waiting on your consultation and then driving to a cleaner who could not do what you sent me to them for.
The worst part of all of this was the lack of remorse on their part during this whole transaction.

I dropped off my shirts at the Anderson location and wanted them back the next day. Their process takes 2 business days so in order to get the shirts back the next day, I had to go their central location at Guadalupe for pick up the next day. I’m not sure if that’s the norm here — but in Chicago we could always drop off our garments in the morning and have them back after 5 the same day. I went in with low expectations and thought the garments would get lost by re-​routing them to Guadalupe. To my surprise, they successfully re-​routed them and were available for pick up the next day.
The employee was great about pre-​spot treating the shirts and applying plenty of stickers to indicate where the oil stains were. I was pleased that they took care into taking these notes. The shirts came back clean and that’s all I can ask.

Just got both my 45 lbs of wash and fold and 12 pieces of dry-​cleaning back and was not that impressed. We paid $ 200 for everything which seems like a reasonable price for as much stuff as we brought in. We are still putting everything away and have no had any new holes or discolorations or shrinkage… yet. We are crossing our fingers after reading these reviews! However, I have noticed that the wash and fold laundry smells like rubber or some chemical. So, while I know this is a hippie thing to do, I guess they don’t like detergent? I don’t know. My stuff at home smells wonderful. My other huge complaint is that all of our clothes looked like they took our clothes to a 3rd grade class for the blind to fold. I’ve never seen such horrible folding in my life. So we are having to refold everything. I’m big on how my clothes go into my dressers and how they are arranged. That’s just me. Taking a collared shirt and folding in half so that when you get it out, the collar is all zig-​zagged. What’s that about? We won’t be back to EcoWash, it just happened to be the closest. I’ll travel further for better.

We at Austin Shakespeare use EcoClean for all our costumes and they are great with delicate and fancy clothes as well as everyday stuff. The staff is amazingly friendly and smart. I hear their new on one Anderson lane is great too! I understand they also do pick ups! And of course the clothes smell fresh and clean without those dry cleaning chemicals.

I visit Austin often and recently needed a dry-​cleaner at the last minute. I tried these guys because they are green and totally loved them! They bent over backwards to get my things back to me quickly and the people working there we amazingly friendly. Two thumbs-​up EcoClean!

I came in on a Friday needing a light purple dress shirt and a black pair of slacks cleaned by 2pm on the following Monday. I had worn the shirt 3 times before and it had no stains on it. They told me there would be a rush charge because, although they’re open on Saturdays, they only clean on weekdays. They said my clothes would be ready by noon on Monday.
I come in at 12:45 on Monday and I had to wait about 20 minutes because at first they couldn’t find my shirt. Great. It turns out they were still finishing it. I finally pick up both items and took them home to get ready to put them on for the event I had at 2pm. When I looked at the shirt in better light I noticed faint light blue stains on the back of the shirt. These stains were not there in the first place! I ended up wearing the shirt because I had no other choice, and the event I was going to had dim lighting.
Customer service:
I called about the stains. At first they tried to claim that the stains might have been there in the first place (well, wouldn’t that be the point of getting them cleaned?) but eventually they conceded that it could be their fault. They said that if I take it back in they’ll take a look at it and clean it again for free. I never took them up on the offer because I didn’t have time. I also have a feeling that if I did come back then no one there would remember the situation. I ended up taking the shirt somewhere else to get it cleaned again.

EcoClean is by far the best in Austin! I have to get a lot of my wardrobe professionally cleaned and I’ve always been more than happy with the results. Silk, material with embellishments, purses, dresses, work attire… everything has come back perfect. Other cleaners have pressed my clothes wrong, colours have bleed, changed the texture, etc. I haven’t had a single problem since going to EcoClean. It’s the only place I fully trust!

The quality of there cleaning needs a vast improvement. I had a really expensive blazer that I had worn twice and decided to get it cleaned. There were no visible stains but thought it was time. Unfortunately it came back darker than when I sent it to them (it was a winter white color) and the texture of the material is now rough. In addition to that the pick up and delivery is not consistent. No seems to care to answer the phone and voice mails left to «Tony» were not returned in addition the request left on the voice mail for a pickup has been ignored on two separate occasions. I really wanted to buy into the ‘earth friendly” services that they offer but they sure make it hard not to go back to the other types of dry cleaners. At least the other cleaners show up and my items come back in good order.

I only get the bulk laundry wash and fold done here, so I can’t speak for the wet cleaning process. That being said, I think I might’ve found a drop-​off service I really like.
The people are friendly and they even return certain items on hangers. What they put on hangers seems a little random, but oh well – it works. If you already have too many hangers at home, they even have a space just in the door to recycle extra ones you don’t need.
All the laundry gets done in the back, where it isn’t a public laundromat, so that sort of alleviates my fears about my clothes getting stolen along the way.
The only downside is that it can get a bit pricey if you get the «rush» service to get it done on the same day, but the prices aren’t that much more than most wash and fold places if you can wait a little longer. Then again, I think these guys are worth paying the extra couple bucks for.

I was disappointed in this place after initially being very excited about a delivery garment-​cleaning service.
Pick-​up and delivery was great. Left it when I left in the morning, and they delivered it for me three days later. However, once you get past that, it was so-​so at best. I asked for light starch on my shirts — there was no starch used. I asked that my shirts be wet-​cleaned, and not laundered, and they were laundered. And finally, I was told that my suit could be cleaned utilizing this eco-​friendly method without damage or shrinkage. My pants were shrunk dramatically, and these are the pants to my best suit. They are no longer wearable.
This place is good for maybe once in a while, but I would never, EVER, put my best clothes in their care again. If you really like and take care of your clothes, I would do the same as me.
