Specialties
Hog Island Deli brings to Austin the first truly authentic hoagie deli with original Philly cheesesteaks, the freshest of salads. Carlo & Steve DiMarco are proud to share the traditional Italian recipes from South Philadelphia with Austin locals.
Loaves are baked daily in the deli’s own Philadelphia baker. The Italian meats, imported from Philly and Italy and of the finest quality, are sliced directly into the hoagie loaf with each order. The popular turkey is oven roasted daily. And how about those famous cheesesteaks! Made with the DiMarco’s own secret family recipe of cheeses and spices with freshly sliced meat. For those looking for something lighter, Hog Island Deli offers low-carb options and a variety of salads including specialty Italian salads.
So please come in to Hog Island Deli and meet the DiMarco brothers and enjoy delicious, authentic hoagies.
History
Established in 2004.
Hog Island is an island near the intersection of the Delaware & Schuylkill Rivers, near the naval shipyards in South Philadelphia, the resident location of thousand of Italian immigrants. During World War I, Hog Island became the site of the first shipyard ever built for mass production of ships, and ultimately the workplace for hundreds of Italian and Irish immigrants.
The Italian immigrants of the early 20th century brought with them their beloved Italian meats. While the origin of the term «hoagie» remains debatable, we believe that the term derived from the ships they built, the «Hog Islanders», hence the sandwiches consumed by the workers became known as «hoggies». At some point after World War II, the «hoggie» became the «hoagie», when the term first appeared in the local Philadelphia telephone directory in 1945.
In 2004, Carlo and Steve DiMarco brought to Austin true, authentic hoagies when establishing the original Hog Island Deli at 16th & Lavaca.
