Hooked Up Tacos

Barry and family/​crew do a great job! We have been using them to cater company events for almost 2 years now. Always reliable, great food and service. Even with short notice and changes they have always been able to accommodate with no problem! We have used Hooked up Tacos for breakfast tacos, full catered lunches, Happy Hours and random events and menus. They have never disappointed and I would highly recommend Hooked Up!

Very good tacos reasonable prices for there proportions. Service is also good always very nice. Always very prompt getting your food out to you. Great recommendation for breakfast.

Nothing special. Just fresh gas station tacos. Kind of expensive but the tacos were not bad.

Good start, but could use some tweaking. I just tried a variety of breakfast tacos from HUT and they were a-​OK. Tortillas (flour) were just right. Nice warm and chewy. Eggs were so so, not bad but scrambled a little too hard (lot of tiny pieces). Cheese was good, but slightly lacking in quantity. Beans were just OK. Bacon was tasty, but they should take a cue from Austin Java and use bigger pieces. Potato was not good, sorry folks. Just 4 – 5 pieces of overcooked cubed potato. Guess I’m used to the shredded potato style in my BTs. Their creamy, spicy tomatillo sauce was excellent. So, not too shabby and good prices. I’ll be back and am hopeful of seeing progress.

I remember a couple of Christmases back that Hook’em Up Tacos made headlines because their food trailer at 620 and 2222 was stolen. As far as I know it was never recovered and I remember feeling sorry for the family that lost their business during the holidays. I never had a chance to try «Hook’em Up Tacos» when their trailer was open for business. It appears Hook’em Tacos has reincarnated in the form of a walk up counter and drive-​thru window inside the Valero Gas Station at Hwy 620 and Little Elm Trail. It’s not someplace I would have imagined a former food trailer business to reopen their business but it isn’t that unusual either given the widespread marriages of convenience between fast food chains and gas stations. Well I’m a sucker for underdog and come from behind stories and Hook’em Up Tacos is near where I live so I decided to give them a try and throw a little support their way.
My first visit to Hook’em Up Tacos was on a Saturday morning after my daughters’ swim class. We ordered a number of tacos and my wife and kids liked them just fine. I had a bacon, bean, and cheese taco on corn tortilla and I thought it was ok but nothing to rave about. I learned during that visit at the drive-​thru that they are open for breakfast and lunch. So I followed up on a separate visit and ordered one of their burgers. I got the «onion press» which consists of onions cooked on a griddle and ¹⁄₃ pound burger patty that is «pressed» onto the onions. I don’t know that is approach tastes any better than onions that are cooked separately and then applied to the patty but I will say that this approach causes the onions to remain embedded in the patty and less likely to slide off the assembly. It’s always good to see someone using their noggin in the kitchen applying practical solutions. I have had this burger twice and I have to say it is a very respectable fast food burger. They have a number of other burger options that are offered in ¼ pound, ¹⁄₃ pound, and ½ pound sizes. They cook them to order so be prepared several minutes while they prepare your burger. One complaint I have is that they don’t serve fries. The employee at the window explained that the owner would add this to menu after he determines that they are getting enough lunch hour business. That makes sense and truth be told I probably need to eat less fries anyway.
While I have only had a breakfast taco and a couple of burgers their menu also includes; chicken salad sandwich, BLT, Philly cheeses steak sandwich, pork and chicken fajitas, BBQ chicken wrap, quesadillas, grilled cheese sandwich, peanut butter jelly sandwich, and tortilla soup. They also have a few exotic items on the menu such as «papas rancheros» (no idea what this is), peanut butter and bacon burger (not sure what to think about this), «enchilada pie» (this appears to be some sort of Mexican Lasagna), Fideo (no idea what this is but it’s served in a bowl) and a «Hook’em Up Salad» (which includes mixed greens, candied walnuts, and Gorgonzola Cheese). That salad sounds really good and really unusual for a fast food establishment. I think I will try that salad next time. I give them credit for having a creative menu.
The staff has been friendly and helpful each time I have pulled through their drive-​thru. I’d like to give Hook’em Up Tacos 3.5 stars but you know how that goes on Unilocal.I think these guys have good upward potential on the star ratings and I look forward to them growing their reinvented business and maybe adding fries to the menu in the near future. It’s going to be a tough road for them fighting the Guadalajara Restaurant (a block away) and a donut place (across the street) for breakfast taco patrons. Maybe the convenience of the drive-​thru will give them a little edge. As for the lunch offerings, I think these guys offer a great locally owned alternative to the fast food establishments that populate this area. If you like supporting local businesses and you like underdogs, you should give Hook’em Up Tacos a try.
