J. Steven Widner, DDS

I had been putting off wisdom teeth extraction surgery for months as I had a ton of anxiety about taking care of it. I then got a recommendation from my dentist that Dr. Widner was amazing, and he did not disappoint! Dr. Widner made this whole experience as smooth as possible. His staff was unbelievable on surgery day and on each of my follow ups. I had IV sedation on 4 impacted wisdom teeth, and Dr. Widner and his staff made sure I had all the information I would need for a speedy recovery. He even personally called me the following night just to see how I was doing and if I had any questions. I already had a vacation planned for the following week, so Dr. Widner made sure to see me right before and right after I came back just to make sure everything was looking okay. Wisdom teeth surgery seems daunting, but with Dr. Widner and his wonderful staff it was such a piece of cake. Thank you again so much for putting my worried mind at ease!

Cannot say enough great things about Dr. Widner. Gone the extra mile for my family. He has performed wisdom teeth surgery on both my daughters and TMJ surgery on one. When I told him my daughter did not respond to a normally prescribed drug, he listed to me. Most doctors don’t. He also coordinated orthodontic treatment for a problem that he discovered.
Dr. Widner is a very skilled surgeon. He is very well respected among other medical professionals in Austin.

As much as I dreaded having oral surgery, Dr. Widner and his staff were awesome! I had a very high level of anxiety and he really put me at ease, and made sure I was pain free during the whole experience. Even got a call from him that evening to check on me. Who does that anymore? The front desk staff, nurses and surgeon are all wonderful! They truly care about their patients.

Dr Widner was extremely kind, considerate and professional. I was TERRIFIED to have my wisdom teeth extracted and as such postponed it for years. Due to my fear and postponement, I lost the tooth next the my wisdom tooth. Dr Widner calmed my fears, reassured me that all would go well. I finally had my wisdom teeth +1 additional broken tooth extracted a week ago. I was asleep thru the whole procedure and awoke feeling no pain. Of course there was some discomfort following the procedure, but it was absolutely nothing like I had feared. Furthermore, Dr Widner provided his cell number and advised me to call him if I had any problems. Thankfully, I didn’t have the need to call him but knowing he would be available for me if I needed assistance was so comforting. Dr Widner is fabulous. I will have no hesitation in using him again and recommending him to family and friends. Your in safe hands with Dr Widner and his staff!

Dr. Widner is amazing at what he does. I had corrective upper and lower jaw surgery and my swelling was almost nonexistent after only 3 weeks! Dr. Widner is very professional and has a very kind and attentive bedside manner. My orthodontist, Dr. Kunik, referred me to him and they made a great team getting me through the whole process. Dr. Widner’s staff is top-​notch and I always felt welcomed when I went there for appointments.
I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Widner’s office. He’s the best choice if you’re going for corrective jaw surgery!

Here’s my story —
when I was a teen, I was in a wreck that broke my jaw. Afterwards, I was sent to a plastic surgeon who kind of messed it up and I ended up with an underbite. I lived with an underbite for 14 years, trying to figure out how I was going to get it fixed. I went to multiple oral surgeons, cosmetic dentists, and orthodontists, all of whom told me that they couldn’t help me and to go to someone else, or they offered to put veneers in and file my teeth down or some nonsense, giving the appearance of not having an underbite.
As the years went on, I was having more pain and discomfort, besides that, I couldn’t eat hamburgers or hoagies or anything without a knife and fork since I couldn’t bite through the onions, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. I was referred to Dr. Widner and I was seriously going to call it quite on trying to get this fixed if he ended up like the rest.
When I finally met Dr. Widner, I was floored with how professional and kind he was. He listened to my story and didn’t BS me. He was also really quick to take measurements and have me Facetime with the orthodontist he recommended (that I also loved), Dr. Kunik. We made a plan to have upper and lower orthognathic/​TMJ surgery, I would need about a year of Invisalign and we would go from there.
His staff worked closely with me in order to get all of the approvals from the insurance company. When surgery time rolled around, I knew I was in good hands and was totally at ease. Dr. Kunik met with my mom (who panics easily and didn’t want me having the surgery) and even she just relaxed and stopped over-​thinking everything. He even managed to relax my husband, who was freaking out.
Dr. Kunik visited at the hospital, and I see him periodically for post-​op visits and I couldn’t be happier with the results and with the care I received. It’s been a little over 3 months since my surgery and I LOVE my smile for the first time in years and can finally eat foods properly.

Dr. Widner is a rock star! He’s positive, pleasant, focused and I would say a terrific surgeon.
I had a softball batted in to my mouth, causing trauma to my teeth. One tooth ultimately fractured and I was told by 2 endodontists and my regular dentist it could not be saved. Dr. Widner was the fourth dental professional to say it couldn’t be saved.
A dental implant, I thought, would be a nightmare. I’m 61 with all my teeth and had planned dying that way. It was emotionally painful hearing I had to have my tooth extracted and get an implant.
Dr. Widner and his wonderful, highly professional staff saved the day. They made the whole experience positive and almost completely pain free. The procedure and recovery was nothing like I thought it would be and far exceeded my expectations. I was actually stunned how well I felt after my surgery, how minimum the pain was overall and how quick the recovery was. On the second day I had some nausea, I think from the pain medication, and that was the worst of the whole experience.

I thought everyone was nice in the office. My problem is the exorbitant prices that they charge for a simple tooth extraction. I was determined not to pay anything over what castle dental charged $ 100 two years ago. This office $ 600. I am sure they can help people with complicated dental problems. Stay away if you have a routine non complicated exactions. I will never go back there nor recommend this office after they lied to me. They will cheat given the chance.

I never thought surgery could be fun until my wisdom tooth extraction with Dr. Widner and his excellent surgical team. Despite the fact that ALL of my wisdom teeth were impacted (I waited way too long to get the surgery), they managed to remove them in a way that caused minimal pain and swelling. I had to attend a neighborhood party the next day and NO ONE noticed. In fact, when I told my neighbors that I had just gotten my wisdom teeth out, they were flabbergasted. Not only did they do an excellent job technically speaking, but also, they made my first surgical experience ever fun! Before my surgery, I had no time to be nervous as we were devising a plan to rob the Blue Bell factory and talking about getting pet monkeys. Once I came to, the nurse was as sweet and gentle as could be, taught me how to put pressure on my wounds using gauze, and made sure I didn’t try to walk out on my own even though I thought I would be able to (which was a anesthesia-​haze-​induced grandiosity that was definitely inaccurate… I would have fallen on my face without the wheel chair). A truly wonderful experience. Dr. Widner has been great since then, calling me to check on me and making an effort to be there and examine me at my post-​surgical follow-​up appointment. It could not have been a better experience! I plan to refer everyone I know who needs oral surgery to this office. My little brother is next up! Thank you so much to Dr. Widner and his team!

Dr. Steve Widner is the one you want if you have to have Oral Surgery!
I have been very impressed with Steve Widner of Widner & Alford Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and give him my highest possible recommendation to him! I had oral surgery at the last minute and he was so kind and caring that he put me at ease when I was in pain and scared of what was happening. He explained everything to me and didn’t pressure me into doing anything; he gave me options on what I could do to resolution the problem. I chose to do surgery then and there. I had driven myself there so they called my daughter to come and get me when everything was over and she went back later to get my car. Dr. Widner called me later that night to check on me which impressed me because he did so himself and not a staff member. This personal touch made me feel so much better. Then a day later I had some swelling that scared me so I called the office he was at a different office that day, but the staff did not put me off, they call him and within an hour or so they had called in a prescription for something to reduce the swelling. I received another call for Dr. Widner making sure that the prescription worked and I was comfortable. I have to say that the personal attention that he gives is fantastic! I went back for my follow up visit a week later and he listened to me on what I felt and gave me an appointment to do another follow up visit, I feel like I am important with and not just a body that needs worked on. I never feel rushed like he wants to get on to the next person, you would think you were the only person he had to deal with that day, which isn’t true because I saw people in the waiting room, but it is nice knowing that you can ask questions and not annoy him. If you have to have oral surgery I would go to Dr. Steve Widner and I would send any of my family to him because he cares about his patients!

My husband & I both had amazing experiences with Dr. Widner & his staff. My husband had his wisdom teeth out by Dr. Widner a couple years back & I just had major surgery on my jaw (upper and joints) by Widner as well.
Dr. Widner’s care & manner w/​me after surgery could not have been better. I knew I was in great hands from my first appointment but he exceeded my expectations upon waking up from surgery & every time I’ve seen him since.
To call him arrogant & self-​absorbed is a false accusation in my opinion. He may not be bubbly & over the top but he is consistently warm, informative, efficient & caring when I see him.
My recovery has been better than expected due to the talent of Dr. Widner. His staff is extremely nice & helpful, I love every visit I make. There are one or two assistants who could be happier during my appts, but overall I enjoy seeing them all.
We even had a last minute change to my insurance coverage request & Heather worked hard to make sure we had all our bases covered.

I am a person who absolutely HATES going to the dentist. Even for a simple cleaning I get anxiety so it was a very pleasant surprise to have zero anxiety when I had 4 wisdom teeth removed. I credit this to Dr. Widner and his staff.
From the consultation to the moments right before the «surgery» I felt totally at ease and comfortable. Dr. Widner let me know that it was gonna be a very quick and pain free experience and he was right. I think the whole process (numbing gel, shots to numb and extraction) took about 45 minutes. Know what else? Dr. Widner took time out of his busy schedule to personally call me and make sure everything was ok post op. I’ve NEVER had a doctor do that. I followed up with a visit to make sure everything was healing right and after a week all is going as planned.
The entire staff was very kind, I never had to wait past my appointment time and I never had an issues with getting an appointment that fit my schedule.
Its impossible to know how recovery will be when you get teeth yanked out of your face but for me it was easy breezy. From start to finish a GREAT experience for a procedure that I’ve been dreading for years. Thank you Dr. Widner!

VERY unimpressed. Went with girlfriend and her brother for their wisdom teeth procedure. Staff seemed extremely frustrated and annoyed by both of them because they were «goofy» after the procedure. There was no one around to help replace the needed gauze, they ran out of blankets in this FREEZING place, and when staff WAS around, they were rude and unhelpful. Then they ran out of ice packs so we had to go home with warm ones. To top it off, Dr Widner kicked me out of the recovery room because I took a video of them after the procedure which «violated the patients rights» even though my girlfriend REQUESTED that I take video. Extremely unprofessional experience, and NOT recommended.

Dr. Widner is a classic example of arrogant, self-​absorbed surgeon. My partner had all four of his wisdom teeth removed one Friday and was having excruciating pain on the Sunday following. He called the cell phone number they had given him for calls over the weekend three times and no one ever returned the call. On Monday morning, he called and explained the pain/​symptoms he was having and was told to come right in. Then we proceeded to wait in the lobby for over an hour. When we finally got to see Dr. Widner, he waltzed into the room and said «what’s up» and then walked over and sat down with his back to both of us. My partner explained all of the problems he was having and he looked in his mouth briefly and proceeded to ask if he was a smoker 3+ times, which he is not. He came off as accusatory, condescending, and just plane rude. Finally, he declared that they would treat him for dry socket and then just left the room. The «lead surgical assistant» then came in to do the treatment and she was really rude as well. I spoke up and said «he only has 5 pain pills left and I’m worried that won’t be enough considering all the pain he has been in» to which she responded «oh, that should be fine».
The whole experience was terrible. I would never go back.

Well let me start with the positives! We really like Dr. Alford! He was nice, they got us in quick etc.
As for the negatives! It has been an absolute nightmare getting our refund back from these people. Heather M. is absolutely lovely, but we can’t seem to understand why they will not pay us back. We paid over $ 7,000 up front to have some extractions and a few implants done. They insisted we pay in full before having surgery.
Well, upon the day of the surgery, they decided it wouldn’t be wise to do the implants. That was fine with us… we were disappointed, but trusted him.
All that to say, the extractions cost WAY less than the implants, and we are owed over $ 3,000 back.
They wouldn’t give us a refund until insurance paid… Heather said the office couldn’t issue two refunds… (i.e. one for the work that had not been done and one for after insurance had paid)
Problems ensued when Guardian, our insurance company, never received the claim from their office. I had to call the office 3 times to get the office to submit the claim.
Then they forgot to give a tooth number, so that delayed the claim further. Finally Guardian issued payment, and I called to get the refund and was told that they didn’t have the check in hand so they couldn’t issue a refund.
A week later, I called guardian who said they had in fact issued payment. I called today to see where the check was, and the saga continues.
Really in truly, we will not be returning to get any work done here. It has been six months since the surgery, still no refund. We’ve spoken with an attorney and may be taking them to small claims court if we don’t get our refund within the next week.
I wish we had gone elsewhere.

I unfortunately got hit in the jaw a few months ago and my dentist recommended I go see Dr. Widner and his team at Widner Oral. To my dismay, after an x-​ray, I found out that my jaw was fractured.
Dr. Widner talked me through everything. Heexplained the injury, and what my options were. It turned out the best option for my injury was surgery, and they were able to get me into surgery the same day as my x-​ray. The night of my surgery, Dr. Widner called me personally to make sure that I was doing alright. There’s nothing to replace the fracture, the pain, and discomfort, but Dr. Widner and his team made an uncomfortable experience as pleasant as possible.
Top down, the whole office/​team is professional and helpful, and I would recommend them to anyone that needs any type of oral work. They’re the best!

Perfect, Perfect, Perfect!
Rarely is a person excited to have oral surgery, so my expectations when visting Dr. Alford were muted. I have to say that through and through the experience was pleasant, and I’m so glad that I did it.
Dr. Alford has amazing bedside manner, and is extremely professional. Speaking with him was enjoyable, and he was more than pleased to answer all of my questions, as well as to take into consideration my special circumstances when making recommendations.
I was little nervous about having my wisdom teeth pulled, and it showed, but the staff was very helpful and encouraging the whole way through. Even though I arrived very early, I did not have to wait long at all. I opted for sedation, and the process was really simple. I think it was the best decision, and was very pleased with how I was taken care of during the preparation for the surgery, as well as the trip to the recovery room. I can’t say that I felt any pain at all, and the swelling was minimal. If you didn’t know I had just had oral surgery, you would not have been able to tell.
I was home and working again that afternoon. I followed all of the doctor’s instructions, and can easily say that I’m beyond pleased with the experience. I highly recommend Dr. Alford and his staff.
Afterward, Heather at the doctor’s office was immensely helpful in assisting me with navigating my complicated insurance claims (the REALLY painful part!) Literally, everything about this experience was stress free, from the build up, to the surgery and the settling of my account.
They definitely get my highest recommendation!

I’m on my couch right now holding an ice pack to my cheek. I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed this morning. Everyone was so pleasant. I pay for everything out of pocket. So I’m used to getting a certain kind of attitude from most places. I was so welcomed by everyone I encountered.
They were redecorating or renovating so their big xray machine was not plugged in. I had to take an xray with this little yellow and black thing placed really far in the back of my mouth. It was so unpleasant and made me gag a little but everyone was patient with me and made me feel better. They really went out of their way I felt to make sure I was comfortable and not embarrassed for crying over it.
I only thought it would be a consultation appointment, but was relieved when the doctor (Dr. Jeff A. Alford) asked if I had time to do it today. Its painful, but I’m glad its over and the headaches and pain from the impaction will be gone as well. The doctor was really good. I chose nitrous because I had eaten breakfast. He made sure to ask if I felt any pain and to let me know what was coming during the procedure. I’m not a very brave person, but it wasn’t awful at all. I will be returning to him for sure in the future for my next wisdom tooth extraction.
I would suggest this place to anyone. I was treated like I mattered even if I was paying out of pocket. The staff are all so friendly and really listen to what you have to say. I only wish I could give them more stars.

After years of dentists telling me I needed to get my wisdom teeth out and me refusing, I started having problems with one that was partially through.
Being the type of gal that cries during fillings, I was freaked thinking about having one out, let alone four.
During the initial consult, Dr. Widner took awesome panoramic xrays, showed me the problem teeth and discussed the risks. My teeth were impacted so they had to be surgically extracted rather than pulled.
I was given the option of twilight sedation vs nitrous oxide. There’s no way in hell I’d have any of that done awake, so I opted for the full sedation.
Dr. Widner gave me all my prescriptions to fill in advance which was a bonus (Vicodin, Antibiotics, Steroids)
On the day of my surgery, I arrived and was whisked into the chair. I’m very thankful that I wasn’t left to sit in the waiting room or an exam room and freak out. The procedure was explained again then I was fed a cocktail of anesthetic. I don’t remember anything else, and just woke up crying in the recovery room. I’m not sure why I was crying, but the doc explained it was a side effect of the anesthetic.
Unfortunately I had a bad reaction to the antibiotic (which i’ve taken before) so Dr. Widner was quick to offer me samples of a different type of antibiotic. So two weird reactions to meds (not docs fault, my bodies fault) and two good explanations and alternative meds given.
The staff was extremely caring and professional.
I’m not gonna lie and say it didn’t hurt, because it definitely hurt for a few days after, but it was nowhere near as bad as i thought it would be. The office gave me a take home full face icepack which definitely helped the swelling.
I followed all instructions to a T, and didn’t get the dreaded dry sockets that I’ve heard horror stories about. I would advise to buy some extra gauze ahead of time though, because the amount he gave me wasn’t enough for the amount of times I had to change my dressing.
I am extremely impressed with Dr. Widners office and would recommend his practice to anyone. I may need Jaw Surgery in the future and if I do, I will definitely be returning.
