We offer a traditional toy selection featuring such classic items as dolls, tricycles, toy vehicles, playsets, stuffed animals, games, puzzles, art supplies, and craft kits. Some of our major toy lines are: Madame Alexander and Corolle dolls, Playmobil themed playsets, Alex art supplies and craft kits, Steiff, Gund, and Douglas stuffed animals, Kettler tricycles and scooters, Ravensburger puzzles, Scientific Explorer and Thames and Kosmos science kits, Bruder and WPW toy vehicles, Breyer collectible and play horses.

We also have a large selection of children’s books, with special strength in board books and picture books.

History

Established in 1975.

Over the Rainbow, which opened for business in 1975, is the oldest independent toy store in Austin, Texas.

Perhaps one of the best toy stores in Austin. Solid, education, fun and always changing. My girls (now 8 and 10) Love this place. Only wish it was bigger. Owner does an excellent job on hand picking some of the cutest, most educational, innovative, and quality childrens toys. Also has complimentary gift wrapping. If only all shop owners could put this much personal touch and effort into details. Love this store.

I was heading to a birthday party recently, two small kids in tow. I didn’t have a gift ready, so decided to stop in and pick something up quickly at Over the Rainbow.
I arrived on a Saturday at about 4:55pm (the store closes at 5pm). Yeah, not great timing, but planning suffers with kids involved.
The door to the store was locked. Long story short, I was told by a clerk that the store was closing. I pointed out that it wasn’t even 5 o’clock yet, and the clerk gave me a teenage shrug and said something like, «We’ve already closed up the drawer.»
It struck me as the precise opposite of customer care. It was my first time visiting, and I was ready to spend money, but turned away so the shop could close up a few minutes early.

I recently rediscovered this toy store from my youth, having shopped there when I was a little kid 30 years ago. Great selection of *so many* things: books, educational/​science toys, playmobil, stuffed animals (GUND!), cars, planes, and some riding toys. They also have some items marked down cheaper than you could buy them online. Awesome staff who knows what «customer service» means. I’ll be back!!!

A warm and friendly place with a helpful knowledgable staff — everything the others reviewers said and more. I went to return a toy, as I had accidentally bought two of the same Christmas toy, and I promised my daughter I would make sure the gift gets returned to Santa so he could give it to the right girl. I gave them the receipt and the toy. It turns out that that particular toy was purchased at another toy store. Still they took the toy, scratched off the tag from the other store, and still gave me a refund. They didn’t need to do that. 37 years in business. 37 years going the extra mile.

I recently came into the store to buy a gift for a neighbor. I used to shop there a lot 10 – 15 years ago when my kids were younger. They have a great selection of toys and books and the best part is that they gift wrap with a festive flair.

Have you ever seen the movie «You’ve Got Mail»? This is the toy-​store version of the small book store in the movie… It is very cute, the staff is extremely friendly and helpful, they wrap all gifts so preciously, and it is clean and safe for kids to just roam around and play in. Also, it is organized into areas of stuffed animals, baby stuff, reading nook, planes/​trains/​autos, dinosaur type stuff, gadgets, etc, so it’s really easy to find «your spot.» The only downfall is that you do pay for service, and this place is considerably more expensive than places like Toys R Us, but especially if you live near, it is SO worth it.
