Fuurin-Oka Futon & Breakfast

This place is magical.
My husband and I honeymooned here, after a long flight from Kansas to Seattle. I hope the new owners realize how much Furrin-​Oka has affected those of us not able to travel to Japan.
It’s small, and it’s perfect. Weddings can be very crazy and even on the verge of heartbreaking. But Furrin-​Oka will make it all go away.

LOVED our visit to this magical place. It was clean, quiet and had a soaking tub. Great location (quick drive to Bloedel Reserves) and wondeful food in the morning. The best part was how authentic it was. I felt like I was back at my grandma’s home in Japan, minus the shrine. The soaking tub melted our worries away then it was off for some fun at Hitchcock, a name your price restaurant which was delish but not as delish as our breakfast lovingly made by Rene with eggs from her über friendly chickens. Would return in a heartbeat.

Spanning from the meticulously landscaped grounds and the architecture of this Japanese tea house, your experience begins with a degree of realism that isn’t easy to come by. The interior space is equally as delightful with traditional sliding panel doors, a waterfall off of the deck, extremely quite part of the island, and, a deep soaking tub in the cedar lined bathroom that can comfortably fit two. Without giving too much away, there are endless surprises tucked inside around every corner for visitors to experience. The serenity of this location is undeniable and the environment allows for one to slip away from city stressors and unwind in a kimono.
And then there’s the food! Whether you decide to have your intimate breakfast served to you in the traditional eating nook or in the indoor/​outdoor patio, prepare your taste buds as this meal will fill you up. All local, organic and incredibly well done, I wish that I ate so lavishly on a daily basis. The egg and pesto omelet placed into a little ham cup was delicious — Yum Yum! Both the presentation and the flavors are delectable!
I look forward to my return to Fuurin-​Oka as this handcrafted visit was exceptional — you will not be disappointed!

I surprised my husband for his birthday with a stay at Fuurin-​Oka and we thoroughly enjoyed the beauty and restfulness of the property and the hospitality was incredible!

Fuurin-​Oka still maintains the quality of experience, cuisine, and atmosphere that previous reviewers have noted. I stayed there for a night and felt totally recharged. It’s an authentic Japanese experience from the tatami mat rooms to the hot soaking tub to the amazing traditional breakfast. This spot would be great for a winter retreat or a summer getaway.
We arrived late afternoon to an immaculately cleaned cottage after a gorgeous ferry ride to Bainbridge. You enter through a thicket of bamboo that truly immerses you into this Japanese retreat. After entering through a foyer, which is stocked with brochures and maps, you find the main room to the right and the shower/​soaking area to the left. There were mochi on the counter and yellow tulips throughout the lodging. The airy main room can be separated by delicate sliding shoji screens so that the sleeping area (complete with mats and linens), the kitchenette, and the porch are divided. The porch looks out on a japanese inspired garden area, which is probably at its finest in the fall or flowering throughout the summer.
You should soak for hours in the soaking tub. During the daytime the quality of light is indescribable and during the night you should crack the window and light tea lights along the sill. The cottage is stocked with a variety of teas.
I cannot compliment the Japanese breakfast highly enough. It was incredible — plated perfectly and cooked to perfection. Ours included piping hot miso soup, a bowl of fresh fruit, and tea. The main selections were freshly made sushi rolls and rice balls. The rice was seasoned very well and the roll ingredients were fresh, balancing a salty and sweet flavor that was just the right note for a traditional japanese breakfast. There were two types of rice balls. The first was filled with a bit of pickled plum, wrapped with a ribbon of squash, and topped with pickled beet and sesame seeds. Truly incredible. The second was topped with a slice of pork and provided a nice counterpoint to the vegetarian rice ball. You can, however, specify all vegetarian if you’d like. Renee asked about dining needs early in the reservation process and was very polite when delivering her delicious food. Although I bet the western breakfast is similarly delicious, the japanese breakfast is not to be missed.
It’s a very special experience. You’ll love it.

Luxury meets minimalist in this authentic Japanese guest house. Complete with tatami mats, [comfortable] futon, soaking tub with bucket-​dippers/​ladles (and candles), surrounding Japanese garden, and Japanese dishware. Incredible unique get away, but near everywhere. The quest house is a perfect retreat. Ann is a wonderful host – attentive, but not overbearing – great «customer service» before and during the trip. She is a respected quilt maker on the island that many locals spoke highly of… a real NW treasure.

This place is phenomenal. This year was mine and my husband’s 5^th anniversary and it fell on a bit of a hectic weekend, but we couldn’t just let it pass us by. I surprised him with this little get away on Bainbridge Island and we could not of been happier.
This is a small little Japanese guest house, tucked away, and surrounded by a garden and bamboo. Every detail has been taken into consideration to make it absolutely authentic. Walking in, there is everything you could need. A small kitchenette, a place to eat, a place to drink tea and watch the garden, a small table to eat and an amazing Japanese bath. The bath is the best part. You can fill it up and there is a Sauna effect, it is the nicest place to relax.
Ann, the owner, has thought of absolutely everything to make the visit perfect. I spoke to her on the phone before multiple times while I arranged our little get away. She gave me her cell phone number to call her when we were on the ferry, because we didn’t yet know which one we would take for sure. She met us as we arrived and walked us in to show us the house. There is everything from extra blankets, to CDs, bath salts if you choose to a flash light just in case the power goes out. Since we had just came from work, she printed out some dinner suggestions, including menus and directions, of restaurants that she thought would fit our preferences, since she knew that we ate vegan and I am gluten free. (we ended up just staying in because the place was too amazing to leave.) There was an electric kettle and a very nice selection of Japanese teas. Ann had stocked the fridge for us for the morning with orange juice, half and half and soy milk and provided coffee and a maker. She asked what time in the morning we would like breakfast and it was discreetly left in the morning. It was wonderful! She accommodated dietary restrictions like no other. She tried new recipes and everything was so delicious, we couldn’t leave leftovers.
We would go back here in a heartbeat. We will definitely be back in the summer. I know that a previous reviewer talked about a cleaning fee, but this was not a part of our experience. If you are thinking of a romantic night away, this is so much better than a night away in the city. Only 30 minutes on the ferry and less than ten minutes more and you are at the most perfect getaway ever.

My wife and I stayed at the Fuurin-​Oka on an August weekend trip to Bainbridge Island for a wedding. It was a perfect getaway! Very authentic Japanese, we loved the shoji screens, mats, and the Japanese bath. And the breakfasts were such a nice personal touch. It was the most peaceful place we’ve ever stayed! So much more enjoyable than staying in a hotel, we will be visiting the Fuurin-​Oka again on our next Seattle trip!

I was looking for some place special to stay for my birthday without taking a long journey. Found this place online and was able to email the owner directly to arrange my stay. She was super attentive to my dietary needs which I usually just work around it and don’t bother telling a place.
I have been to Japan a couple times and have also stayed at Japanese styled places on the west coast. I felt that this place was up at the top. The ‘cottage’ was spotless. The owner showed us around, was super friendly and totally respected that we knew what we were doing with the ofuro tub and our futons. She didn’t bat an eyelash when I said we would take breakfast at 10:00am — I was not getting up early.
The place was so quiet at night that you could hear a pin drop and we loved it. This was a great place to spend my *ahem* 38^th birthday and I will be going there again. It made a great little vacation from Seattle where you really felt that you could get away.
The cats were an extra bonus too!
