Off the Hook Shuckin Shack

I ate lunch there today… the crab roll was wonderful, but the calamari was the star of the show… It may have been the best I’ve ever eaten… It was tender and succulent. I would have preferred that it was served with marinara sauce, rather than cocktail & tartar sauce, but now I’m whining ! John was interacting with the customers& everyone was chatting with each other. The only draw back is that they are closing for the season in 4 days… I’ll go back when they open in the spring!

Went to off the hook on Thursday after work (7pm) Quick service and order was ready quick as well which is important. The seafood was good. I had fried calamari basket, the calamari was great! I got the shrimp basket for boyfriend and once I got home I saw that it was the tiny maine shrimp which I didnt realize. It would be nice to note that on the menu. The coleslaw in the basket was bad but the sauces were good. I would try it again and maybe try something different then the shrimp.

If there was a way to put less than one star I would… was just sold Cod at Haddock prices. Saw the Florida plates and thought we wouldn’t know the difference!!! Maine fisherman’s daughter I know the difference! $ 30.00 down the drain for 2 people! What a sham! Keep driving to Ellsworth and go to Jordans Snack Bar… always good consistent and HONEST! It’s worth the drive.

There are three important things to know about this place, fried, fried, and fried. The seafood is fresh, but you better like it fried. There are some options other than fried and my son had the lobster roll and it was good standard fare. It is not a Lobster Pound with a lot of steaming going on. There is no ambiance, just tables outside to eat. One of our orders the fisherman’s platter was supposed to have scallops but did not.

The seafood is indeed bangin’, and the staff friendly, but this is where it went south. We ordered two two-​way combos and two baskets, and though I should’ve looked closer at the receipt, we got the food home 30 mins later and realized we were given FOUR two-​way combos (plus baskets). I called them and was told the cook screwed up and we were just given more food than we ordered. That would’ve been a positive ending with a fryer screwup, but we PAID $ 36 plus tax for IT. I also think the girl that took the order seemed distracted (the cook was interjecting comments during the interaction, exacerbating confusion) as the extra stuff we asked for was also not delivered. It was raining buckets and we were the only people in there, I’d hate to see that place on a busy Rte 1 day. We ended up with some delicious, fresh Maine seafood, but about two orders ended up in the fridge and will most likely be feeding the raccoons by Wednesday, and $ 40 missing from my bank account. When you go here, make sure they read you back the order. You shouldn’t be walking out of there with a hole in your wallet, as their prices are quite reasonable, (I imagine).

This place was found on Unilocal.VERY nicely done battered and fried seafood. We got the OTH Seafood Frenzy for 3 – 4. It was definitely enough for 4. We only had 3 people, but the value was too good to pass up! Shrimp, haddock, scallops, whole clams and french fries! I am really picky with fried clams because they can become rubbery and tasteless easily, but here they were tender and very flavorful! I highly recommend!!! I live 45 minutes away and if it wasn’t for Unilocal I never would have tried them. Their fresh fish is also very reasonably priced.

Great seafood, the rolls are fresh and their fried stuff is light and not greasy at all. Very fast service and good prices make it a good dinner spot on the way back from hiking all day.

Another success! Second year, first of the season and again they are still great! We had the haddock basket and the whole clam basket and love the fried batter on the fish.

LOVE this place, can’t wait for it to reopen in the spring! The food is takeout style, and always fresh and fairly priced. The portions are good.

This place is amazing, you pay 10.25 for the haddock fish and chips, freshest fish I’v had in a long time, the best tartar sauce I’ve ever had and you could feed up to two people for 10 bucks here. Highly recommend this place, it is not a indoor eating you must sit outside and eat on the picnic tables. Great place for lunch on a nice day or take out!

This is how it’s done. Fresh seafood and fair prices with a no-​frills approach — the quintessential Maine seafood shack.
The haddock sandwich was a mere $ 4.95 and a thing of simplistic beauty (see my pic). Fried clams were stellar, as was the crabmeat roll. Milkshakes topped with whipped cream (a regional thing?) to round things out.
Always great to see someone with the pride and passion to make this roadside institution work. Highly recommended.

Eaten calamari in many places and this was by far some of the best, if not THE best! All the orders coming out looked scrumptious! Prices very reasonable. What a gem of an eatery for Belfast, Maine.
