Description

Specialties

Welcome to the Community Food Co-op, Bellingham’s natural cooperative grocer. What began in 1970 in Fairhaven as a single 900-square-foot store with fewer than 10 items has grown to a two-store 12,000-member-strong natural grocer. We encourage you to participate by shopping, joining, and building and supporting a sustainable, vibrant community.

You’ll find: a certified organic produce department with an emphasis on local; natural and sustainable meat and seafood; local and imported wine; an exciting from-scratch deli for any appetite; an espresso/smoothie bar; great housewares and fun stuff; the most bulk items in town; natural and organic grocery items; in-house baked goods (including GF and Vegan items); organic and hormone-free dairy products; natural supplements and wellness products; and best of all, your dollars stay local!

History

Established in 1970.

The Community Food Co-op was established in 1970 on the south side of Bellingham in the Good Earth Building in a space equivalent to our current produce department. Our co-op grew as a result of the new «health-food» movement, where people were looking for wholesome, inexpensive food. What happened could never have been predicted: with the growing interest in good food sold in an honest setting, the Co-op outgrew its tiny space and moved to a second location on State and Maple Streets. The Co-op moved yet again in 1994 to its current location at the corner of Forest and Holly. In 2009, we opened our second location, a Silver LEED certified building, on Westerly Rd. Our growth has been reflected by many co-ops nationwide because of people’s desire to refine and re-define what they eat. We are fortunate to be located in a community that has helped and sustained us through the years. After all, «Food» may be our middle name, but it all starts with «Community.»
