Nash Hotel

The location of this hotel is what makes it worth staying at. You have to be able to really go with the bare minimum to make this work. It is noisy, not dirty but cluttered, and the water pressure in the shower is basically non existent. When I checked into my room, there was trash in the trash can. The furniture is like the owners went to every yard sale around and bought up the used stuff. Not fancy, semi-​clean, great location, but I felt like I was camping rather than staying in a hotel. The staff is amazing, especially Kenley.

Not your conventional hotel, but the staff is super friendly, everything is clean, and everyone works super hard to make sure your experience is as good as possible. Best and cheapest hotel in the Berkeley area!

Budget-​minded visitors– yes! Clean-​freaks– no. I enjoyed my stay at Nash but I know it wouldn’t work for my husband who even at upscale hotels is hesitant to touch anything and won’t walk on floors in anything less than shoes and socks. There’s a funky smell in the air — it’s just an old building but the rooms and elevator are updated (as of June 2015). I had to go out and buy those foot coverings, because the rug is rather scuzzy. But I have to admit the place grows on you — like staying at your Grandma’s house. The other people attending the same conference were staying at Downtown Berkeley Inn which is a motel. Nash is a hotel — great location near the Bart station and good restaurants.

This is a commuter type of place. One to two nights isn’t bad. I got a room with a double. bed overlooking parking. The lot is free from 10pm to 7am, but come 7am, you should prepare to go pay for parking as the parking enforcement patrols pretty often. The room had a bathroom. Overall, it was good proximity to everything we needed. Owners seemed ok.

Nash Hotel is a quaint, no fuss hotel right in the heart of downtown. We used to live in Berkeley and wanted a reasonably priced option within walking distance of BART when we recently returned for a wedding. This hotel appears to be family owned, and the guy at the front desk (I assume he’s Norman Lam) was really nice and helpful.
We paid ($ 119/​night) for room with a private bathroom. Everything was clean and comfortable, and I suspect that some of the older reviews here on Unilocal were from before they renovated. Our king sized mattress was great! My one complaint about the room was the terrible water pressure in the shower. For some reason, there were always flies outside the main entrance. Maybe someone spilled some soda out there?

Extremely clean and the staff enjoys making people happy. I was impressed honestly. Had a hot water problem in the morning but they hooked me up with no hassle. It’s an old building, shit happens. I have no problem giving them my money. Thanks guys!

A quaint little place that I don’t see any problems with, just a little steep for what it is. I came in late and got a room no problem, very quick and easy. I enjoyed having a key for the building as well as my room, and though down town Berkeley is no Compton, it’s always nice for a little extra security.
The room and bathroom were spotless, possibly the cleanest bathroom I’ve ever seen. And I had a nice little quiet space. The staff was very friendly and easy going, and did their best to accommodate me. The woman at the desk let it slide when I was well past check out time, and tolerated my drowsy babble. I ended up renting a second night and have had a comfortable stay.
I would stay here again but I might chose somewhere cheaper first depending on my own financial situation but overall a nice little place to stay

Check in time was 2pm. We arrived at 340 and needed to wait 20 minutes for them to clean our room. I thought I had requested a king bed somewhere along the way, but got two singles. Decided not to change rooms as we had already waited to eat our bbq. The bed was like sleeping on a toddler bed; hard, weird bounce. The pillows had a stiff internal cover in them. We wanted to look as they felt like a small folded bedspread in a cover. The room was clean except for inside of microwave which was filthy. Everything was low rent, except the TV which was a nice 32 in samsung. Only over the air tv though. microwave and coffee maker weren’t plugged in. Messy cords otherwise. Coffee maker was also missing lid, which made unusable without rigging it. When taking a shower the curtain constantly blew inwards, which didn’t comforting due to other standards not being met. I thought a flip out curtain would solve, but when I looked up all they would need to do is move the curtain rod already there. This felt like a $ 40 hotel. Will not return.

It’s some nice and helpful folks running a reasonably priced hotel. Nothing fancy and possibly a bit quaint, but no bullshit at the same time and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there. I wouldn’t spend more money on the other hotels around the area b/​c the differential simply isn’t worth it, and none beat Nash in terms of location. If I want to pay $ 200~300+ for a night, I’d just go to Fremont or San Francisco where the money actually gets you something fancy and decent.
Some other reviews mentioned bugs, roaches and rats, but I honestly experienced none.
BTW, the bed was really comfortable.

The owners were incredibly nice when you saw them. The previous reviews are really on target in their reviews. I just want to add a few important details. First, it is my husband and two teenagers. We got a room with two double beds. We paid 130.00 a night that included 20 dollars each night for each kid. You do have to pay up front. My son didn’t even stay with us and so I would have liked to not pay the extra 120.00 for him not being with us. We did have our own bathroom with bathrooms located at both ends of our hall. The hotel was being renovated prior to us booking and they opened up for business the day we arrived. Definitely 1930’s style architecture. The owner kept in close contact with my husband prior to our vacation, to ensure that the hotel would be up and functioning when we arrived. This hotel was 2 short blocks from my brother and it was very convenient to not only family but restaurants and shopping. The hotel was in disarray, dusty and smelled very old. We were placed on the 3^rd floor with no working elevator. We were given keys to our room, front and back door. That was great as we could come and go when we wanted. We had 2 bath towels and 2 hand towels and no wash cloths for 4 people for 1 week stay and 1 role of toilet paper. We left early before 9 each day and came back around midnight each day so we never could request anything from the hotel. They do have banking hours. The mini fridge stunk like something had rotted in it. So we didn’t use it because we didn’t want to smell it. We did have a coffee pot with tea bags and coffee that we didn’t use. The carpet is very worn and stained in the rooms. The biggest complaint that I had were the mattresses. They were horrible. The mattresses were lopsided and slanted. We slept both directions trying to see which way was better. We literally slept at a 30 degree angle. We didn’t sleep well and were ready to get out of bed and out of the hotel every day. It was quiet at the hotel, probably because it just reopened. The furniture pictures are somewhat accurate. We had a hodge podge of furniture with a large plastic desk in the room. We could have done without the desk as it made it tight quarters. There is no luxury or amenities. I would consider coming back and giving it another try next year hoping that they get the place functioning and looking better because of it’s location. I really enjoyed my vacation and the hotel didn’t make or break my vacation. It could be a super cute renovated hotel.

Maybe I had very low expectations for the Nash Hotel… but I was very pleasantly surprised! The room was very clean, charming, flatscreen TV, VERY comfortable beds. And the people who manage the place are so nice. The downside is that they don’t have parking, just know that coming here. I don’t want to leave!

Location, location and a low rate! The Nash offers a 1930s hotel experience, upgraded with wifi and some new carpets. The beds and pillows are ok and you can have a private modern bath. Friendly management, looks like this is the Lam family operation.
Our room had a desk, dorm-​size refridge and a tiny coffee maker, also an iron and ironing board but no hair dryer. Hi def TV and slow wifi, the Ethernet cable in the room gave good service to the laptop but the iPad people had to be patient LOL. Great towels but no wash cloths. You want a thermostat?! Haha, the big radiator in the corner was smoking hot and the control valve was stuck, hmm. No a/​c that I could see, but we didn’t need it in March. Cigarette burns on the carpet in our room added, uh, character, yeah that’s the word.
Here you pay the bill at check *in*, right up front and it’s called «rent.» You get a room key — not a plastic card, a real piece of metal — plus a key for the front door, which is always locked. The front desk is one flight up on the Mezzanine level. See what I mean about the 1930s experience?
Despite the street-​front location our room was pretty quiet. Except for the occasional knuckle rap on the door about three am. Wtf?
Lots of vintage details for fans of old buildings. The doors, trim and radiator sure look original! The old elevator is still going strong. The bathroom in our room (and the shared ones in the hall) had new tile, tub, sink and faucets, but vintage cabinets. You can see a fair amount of cable and conduit snaking along the walls. In short this place is at least a couple of decades overdue for a rehab.
Located on University Ave just half a block west of Shattuck (downtown Berkeley’s main street). So it’s just steps to many interesting bars and restaurants, or a few minutes on foot to the western edge of UC Berkeley campus and the Bart station. Take the money you saved by staying here and blow it at Chez Panisse, about a 10 min walk north on Shattuck.

I stayed here over the weekend for a conference at UCB and was pleasantly surprised with the Nash Hotel.
I didn’t have a reservation but I was able to get a room regardless. Checking in was quick and easy and the room was nice and clean. Not to mention it’s at the heart of downtown.
The other reviewers don’t do this hotel justice. My experience here was quite the opposite. It was affordable and comfortable and I will be back for my next visit.

So my mother stayed an extra week after my move-​in day at UCB at the Nash, and all I can say is, she experienced a wonderful stay & wonderful service from the hotel’s owner and staff. In fact, the hotel owner, Norman even provided me with a couple of items for my dorm. The hotel is a quaint and affordable stay. The service is like that which is given at any luxury hotel – the staff is very attentive, especially owner Norman’s wife who is constantly cleaning the vacated rooms. My relatives will now be frequenting at the Nash.

I came here last week while I was paying a visit to my sister in Berkeley.
I wanted to stay somewhere affordable, but still comfortable and this was it! This place has wireless internet along with really comfortable mattresses. I’m not sure what other reviewers mean when they mention bed bugs because for me, they were extremely clean. This place is older and more vintage-​looking which I like.
The next time I stop by Berkeley again, I’m definitely staying here! :)

I have stayed in this hotel for many times because of its downtown location. It’s certainly not an upscale hotel, but it has very good value for its price. Old fashioned style, family run business, standard room, 32 inch TV, and what I care the most is the free internet.
Good choice for someone who want to stay in Downtown Berkeley and without a car — it’s 5 minutes walking to UC Berkeley, Au-​Coquelet café right across the street, and the new Trader Joes just opened one block away.
p. s. the hilarious thing is that I have heard from the lady in the hotel that William Hung used to live here as a long term tenant. He was always using his laptop playing games in the lobby and letting homeless people into the hotel, so he was not her favorite tenant, I guess… LOL

It’s a nice quaint little place. The location is right off the street and very easy to miss when you’re driving around Berkeley. Very old style lodging with options for private or publicly shared bathroom. I thought the place was okay and comparably cheaper than most of the places in the surrounding area and since it was just a place to sleep for the night it was more than sufficient.

It is roachy and the neighbors are weird, but they have wireless internet and it is really close to everything.

Interesting «hotel». More like combo SRO slash cheap hotel. SRO = single room occupancy. Plus you get to meet some «interesting characters» as you try and live on a budget: (a) there is the big guy in almost catatonic state. You know it’s the same guy if there is a half-​eaten pizza box on the table and he hasn’t moved in 3 – 4 hours. True clinical def of catatonic? (b) Then there is the arabic talking guy feverishly browsing and talking on his cell. © I also met Steve. Steve said hello and said he’s an engineer and a permanent resident at Nash. I didn’t ask more. Did I mention the massage parlor? One of the retail stores on the ground level of the hotel is a spa… Being the curious type, I’ve got to check it out. «Massage half-​hour 40 bucks. One hour with body shampoo $ 60» Or was it $ 70? «For you special. hotel guest rate…» I said I’d think about it. On the positive side, you’re walking distance to Downtown Berkeley Bart and all the accompanying great restaurants plus it’s relatively cheap. About $ 50 per night. They have weekly and monthly rates. One week was about all that I could handle. Relatively clean. Didn’t see roaches.

This place is a total dump. There are fucking cockroaches everywhere. I’ve lived in California for three years and never seen cockroaches, and this place is COVERED in roaches, in the sink, behind pictures, in your bed. Bad news. Yeah it’s cheap but it is a stank dungeon. I lived here for three weeks.
