History

Established in 1981.

Jimmy Cosenza Sr. founded the Seal-​Tite Roofing Company in 1946. He later moved the business to San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley in 1952 into the very same building where Nicholas Roofing is located today.

Jimmy Cosenza Jr. started roofing part time for his father’s Seal-​Tite Roofing Company at age 17. He then graduated from high school and joined the United States army for 3 years. He returned to roofing while at the same time attending San Francisco State University. In 1976 Jimmy married Susan Love, a graduate of UC Berkeley. They started a family and Jimmy began a full time roofing career.

In 1981 Jimmy started Nicholas Roofing alongside his father’s Seal-​Tite Roofing Company at the same Berkeley location. He named the company Nicholas after this 3 year old son. Seal-​Tite Roofing eventually closed its doors and Jimmy Sr. passed away, leaving Nicholas Roofing as the only roofing company on San Pablo Avenue.

Jimmy was born in Berkeley and raised in Walnut Creek. He has been happily married to his wife Sue for over 30 years. He enjoys music and likes to go to live shows. His favorite types of music are blues, jazz, and rock. He is a big fan of classic cars from the 1960−1970s. One of Jimmy’s favorite hobbies is wine tasting in the Russian River area. He has built a wine cellar under his home where he stores his collection. He is currently a member in good standing with the Oakland Colombo Club.

If you do not think that a business has a major problem if they do not bother to return phone calls from prospective customers, then perhaps Unilocal is not the place for me to review customer service issues. Are they in business doing roofing or not? If they do not return calls, then they are not in business. Seems like a pretty clear and straightforward review to me.

I do not understand why a business that is advertising as being in business can’t even be bothered to return a phone message from a potential customer. From the reviews, I was expecting a professional business, but if you can’t even return a call you are a flake in my book.

NIcholas Roofing in Berkeley are really good on all key criteria.
Their pricing is very, very reasonable as it should be if you want repeat business and referrals. The quality of the work top; in our case it was multiple rain leak areas in our top of the hill Berkeley house. Their work involved replacing metal shingle components and outside stucco work. The real test then took place the last three weeks from the rain storms. After years of trying many options, Nicolas roofing solved the problem.
Jimmy is great; comes to the house reviews the problem and presents the solutions.
And he does not try to «over-​sell». Scott is excellent working at their office.

These guys are great. They were very easy to deal with, the bid was reasonable, they did the job exactly as they said they would, when they said they would. There was some confusion around the tear off but besides that it went flawlessly. I appreciated their professionalism all the more as i am living on the East Coast and most of our interactions were over the phone.

I had a leak in my roof involving a skylight and I want to thank Nicholas Roofing for being so patient in going over the details of what the possible issues could be. In addition to careful diagnosis, they also were excellent in explaining what would be needed (or not) as far as repair. On both counts, they were very responsive and knowledgeable. Their bid was also reasonable. The only reason I did not use their services in the end was that the original roofer returned to take ownership of the problem. Since leaks are an issue which can be hard to trace, I strongly recommend you put Nicholas Roofing high on your list of people whose services you might use.

Great service!
I have a three-​story house, requiring an extra large ladder. All I wanted was for someone to take a look at the roof to let us know if it needed any work. Nobody else wanted to fool with it.
These guys did it for free! Will call them again when I have work done next time.

Rock stars. easy to deal with. do exactly what they say they’re going to do.
After an unsucessful attempt to get Acker & Gurerro to show up or return phone calls (see review) i called Nicholas. They were great on the phone, followed up the appointment with email reminders, and were prompt and thorough. We grabbed a hose and sprayed it on the roof to determine the exact location of the leak, pretty much exactly where i thought it was. They said no problem to patch that, you don’t need to re-​roof, it’s in good condition. One of their guys came in two days and patched it for $ 100.

Acker & Guerrero thought nothing of hard selling me into replacing my entire roof at, like 70 or 80 times that. wow. Nice to know some people still have ethics.

I had some leaking in my roof and based upon the Unilocal reviews I had them come out to fix it. They said it was because the flashing on my roof ventilators weren’t done right and so I paid them to fix it. But the roof kept leaking. They refused to come out to look at it. At my insistence after several calls, they sent out one of their crew people that could barely speak English. He said that the unit was put in wrong completely and the initial repair that they did wouldn’t have fixed the issue. When I asked about getting a credit for the work done and redoing it so it wouldn’t leak, the owner wouldn’t even call me back. Some service!

I hired Nicholas Roofing to do some repairs & cleaning on my roof and fix a corner of the roof and eaves that had dry rot. The estimate I received was reasonable, and when the work was done (promptly, carefully) the invoice I received was for less than the estimate. Very impressed.

Nicholas Roofing put a roof on our house about six years ago, and we were very happy with the work and the price. Earlier this year, we had a leak during a heavy storm. I called Jimmy Cosenza, and he agreed to come by at 7:30 am to accommodate my work schedule. Jimmy pulled out his ladder and located the problem quickly. I also asked him to inspect our gutters, which were not operating properly in one area.
Jimmy had a crew come by within a few days, and they fixed the roof and the gutter AT NO CHARGE! In addition to the great service, Jimmy is extremely pleasant and personable.
Obviously, I give Nicholas Roofing my highest recommendation.

Nicholas Roofing recently put a new roof on my detached garage. Jimmy (the owner) showed up exactly on time to get the info for an estimate. In addition, he also inspected my house roof, which is newer than the garage, and pointed out some minor maintenance that I could perform.
I also got a bid from another reputable company. The prices were close but Nicholas was a bit less expensive. More important, they proposed to replace the existing tar and gravel with modified bitumen; the other roofer proposed a new tar and gravel roof, a proven but messy approach.
The crew arrived on schedule to perform the tear-​off, which took a couple of hours in the afternoon, and cleaned up the worksite before leaving. The two key guys returned the next day and installed the new roof. They were obviously immigrants but their English was very good and they were fluent in roofing terminology. They were very courteous, competent and did a good clean-​up when they were done.
Here is the best part. Many contractors want some payment before starting a job, others are standing at the door demanding final payment the instant the job is done. Nicholas sent me a bill a week after completing the job. I found this practice, along with their punctuality, to be refreshingly professional. They certainly have the inside track on doing my house roof when the time comes.

You have a hole in the roof into your office and drainage pipe is non-​existent… You better pray that you have someone who is quick and skilled.
That’s what I got with Nicholas Roofing… Our contractor needed a 4inch drainage pipe put in on our deck/​roof in no time flat… Nicholas Roofing swooped in and got the job done quickly. Crazy. There was still small window of time they could do work before it rained and they came through in the clutch…
No more Niagra Falls in my office.

Nicholas roofing did a great job and were the most reasonably priced (I got 3 bids), When I called them to tell them that they had put the gutters on wrong, Jimmy admitted that he had made a mistake and the next morning they were out to tear them completely off and start over no questions asked. It took 2 days total and they did a quality job. Jimmy is a very personable guy.

I needed my roof done pretty last minute, along with some serious dry rot work done. They did it in 2.5 days, and their work was AMAZING. Very well done. Their crew worked like a well-​oiled machine, and cleaned up. You MUST get an estimate from these guys if you’re having work on your roof done.

Jim Cosenza came out to look at my roof which we thought needed an expensive repair. Elliot & Elliot wanted to re-​roof ½ the house for over 6K! Jim explained that we could solve the problem, most likely, with a caulking gun & about an hour’s time. Breath of fresh air as far as contractors go. Very honest people.
