I went to Dr. Beal’s office for 10+ years before moving out of state. I always had great experiences (considering I am not a big fan of going to the dentist). Alana was my hygienist, and she is phenomenal! Very friendly, gentle and professional. I had an issue where the enamel was coming off my front teeth. Dr. Beal could have easily upsold me on veneers or even caps like some other dentists tried to, but he proposed and implemented a much less expensive solution that worked wonderfully. He is a perfectionist, and his work shows it. I highly recommend.

Dr. Chiang was extraordinary. Very professional and exceptional bedside manner. Not only did he explain what he was doing every step of the way, but he was continuously checking up on me and noticed if I was even slightly uncomfortable. He also gave me helpful hints for continued oral hygiene that I found very helpful. I never thought I’d be sad to leave the dentist’s office!

I have been going to Dr. Beal and his associates for 10 years. I have never been disappointed! They have always assured my comfort and followed through. Nice location! The Dr. also has great taste in music!

This was my first dentist experience in the Boston area, and they were AMAZING! I work at Boston Children’s Hospital and it took me less than 8 minutes to get here by bus. The receptionist in the front was welcoming, inviting, very sweet and knowledgeable about my dental insurance. My dental hygienist was beyond wonderful. She cleaned my teeth flawlessly and was gentle, kind, and very funny. The actual dentist was very pretty and professional. No cavities, yay! I would recommend coming here for anything and everything related to dentistry. They have before and after work hours available. Plus when you are done, you can go shopping on Newbury Street to reward yourself for going to the dentist.

These kids clean my teeth. It’s what dental hygienists (and toothbrushes) have been doing since dinosaurs flew their little winged, leather bodies around the earth. I read that in a book.
What separates this location from the pack is how incredibly gentle, thorough and (dare I say?) comfortable getting prophylaxis performed here can be. State of the tech — yeah, they whipped out the Cavitron — and a spotless office environment help to create a serene, sterile experience even if the chompers ain’t.
Plus, the polish flavors rotate with the seasons. How bougie.
The complaints are few and far between, mostly related to the doctor’s exam coming across as a sales pitch and an overkill approach to X-​rays. What kind of dental tectonic shifts are they expecting? They’re teeth, not sunflowers for criminy’s sake.
Love the staffs professionalism, and flexibility with their schedule. Love the Creamsicle flavored tooth polish. Don’t love the cosmetically-​heavy procedural recommendations. Love the Cavitron. Don’t love the Cavitron.

You see I’m a horrible patient. I will pretend there’s nothing wrong with me even if I’m burning up with a fever or have a broken bone, and then I will hobble my way around until I’m about to pass out.
Staying true to this moronic behavior of mine, I deliberately ignored a tooth ache for a few months until it reached a point of being unbearable and I found myself reluctantly sitting in Dr. Hong’s dental chair waiting to get a root canal. And then I became fan for life.
Dentists have it worse than Accountants. No one likes them and that’s just never really going to change. But Dr. Hong is one of those few dentists who not only is fantastic her job but also incredibly efficient. She will patiently explain every step of the procedure and discuss alternatives and after-​care and is quite possibly the only dentist I’ve been to who’s done nearly pain-​free dental procedures. And on top of that she is a very warm, friendly woman with a great bedside manner, going so far as to calling me a day after getting a dinky root canal to ask me how I was doing.
Everyone, right from Lacey at the front desk to all the hygienists, is incredibly friendly and professional. They’re excellent when it comes to scheduling appointments and follow up visits and managing insurance documents. They’re prompt to respond if you have a slightly urgent situation at hand, and generally make life so much easier by being on top of things.
So as I’m sitting here with a post-​surgical tooth ache (despite being handled by a very capable new dentist since having moved to DC), and devising plans on how to get to Boston just so that Dr. Hong can continue this procedure, I think you should believe me when I say this could be one of the best dental offices in Boston. If they accept your insurance plan and you can make it to Back Bay; absolutely go for it.

This place is fantastic! I have been coming here for five years and I always get top notch service. Alana and Katie are both fantastic hygienist’s.
Everyone is very laid back and kind. Dr. Beal does fantastic work. He may take longer than most Dentists, but he is thorough. He does a job once and does it right. I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my dental care.

I’m not sure how you could have a bad experience here. Sure, it’s a dentist. But Dr. Beal and especially the hygienist Alana are so sweet and kind and — most importantly — do an amazing job cleaning without causing pain. Really what more do you want?
Like absolutely any other doctors office (or plane flight, or dinner reservation), the later in the day your appointment is, the more likely it is that the doctor is running late and you’ll have to wait a little. It’s worth it to have a great dentist.

Let’s face it, nobody really likes to go to the dentist. But it really is important for your overall health.
I recently required a crown, my first, and was dreading the visit. It would be my first major procedure ever.
Let me say one thing. Dr. Hong is incredible! Not a bit of pain or discomfort. And not only that, she called me the following day to make sure I was ok. Her assistant for the procedure was also very good. (I forgot her name though)
Alana continues to be the best hygienist.
And I could never leave out Lacey at the front desk. She starts out the visit with a very warm greeting. Great with the paperwork and insurance details.

So thankful for this office. I have a chip in my front tooth from a while ago and the cover happened to fall off early this morning. I was in the Doctors chair within an hour of my phone call and walked out the door with a perfect looking tooth an hour later. Dr. Hung was fantastic and will be my new Dentist in Boston.

I’m pretty sure it’s a fact, no one likes the dentist. Another thing no one likes? Collection agencies, which this office sent after me when they tried to file a claim with my OLD insurance agency (from an appointment back in October), that they still had on file.
I don’t want to get into too many details, but basically it took weeks of back and forth with the dental office using the wrong insurance, not telling me, then claiming I didn’t have insurance (I did) then FINALLY getting the claim submitted and paid for by insurance. Then what shows up in the mail on Thursday? A bill from the collections agency, for the full amount of the October appointment. They never called them off.
DESPITE all of this, the people that work here are very kind and the actual in the chair experience has always been good. They also have a convenient location and hours. It seems like other people have had no problems.

First, I should say that I have had great experiences with the hygienists in this office. I also really like Dr. Chu, but I think she isn’t at this office anymore.
Now for the review of Dr. Beal:
Eek! I saw him maybe 2 or 3 times. The first 2 times were fine. He looked over my teeth after they were cleaned and there were no problems. The 3^rd time, he was doing a filling. I hadn’t had a filling done in maybe 5 years so I was a little nervous about it. Who isn’t nervous when going to the dentist? Dr. Beal was incredibly bothered by the fact that I was nervous and made jokes like, «I’m going to beat you up,» «If you don’t relax and uncross your legs, the anesthesia medication isn’t going to work. It’ll hurt more,» «There’s no way you could have more than one filling done at a time when you’re like this,» and «If I had known you’d be like this, I would have given you medication to take before hand.»
Let me just clarify that my nervousness was exhibited by having my arms and legs crossed and saying that I was nervous. That’s pretty much it.
When he was actually doing the filling, he made some comment like, «Surgeons are the lucky ones. They don’t have to deal with nervous patients because they’re all asleep.» I was very annoyed at this point. When he was done and I got up, I told him I was really bothered by his comments and I felt he was condescending. He told me, «Well, I don’t really know how to deal with nervous patients.» WHAT? You’re a dentist! Isn’t that part of your job description?!
When he brought me to the front to get scheduled for the next filling, he told the receptionist to schedule me with Dr. Chu. Thank goodness, because every appointment I had with her was great!
I might have understood Dr. Beal’s behavior if I had been freaking out and acting irrationally, but I wasn’t at all. Overall, it was a bad experience.
I saw that another reviewer was also mistreated by Dr. Beal because he was nervous, so if you tend to get nervous when going to the dentist, do not see Dr. Beal.

I’ve been coming to this place for almost a year and my experiences have been pleasant so far. They are pretty good at accommodating busy schedules and properly taking care of insurance paperwork for you.

This place is great. First of all, it’s convenient — it’s right by Hynes and it’s open Saturdays. The receptionist was also able to fit me in for an appointment the day after I called. Second of all, everyone is extremely friendly, from receptionists to assistants to the dentist I saw (Dr. Hong). Dr. Hong did a great job and willingly answered all of my dental questions. It’s evident that she knows a lot about what she’s doing and wants to share that information with others. I was afraid I’d catch some flack for not having been to the dentist in quite a while, but everyone here was extremely nonjudgmental.
The best part is that their rates are pretty fair for Boston (at least by comparison) and they offer a discount for people who don’t have dental insurance, as well as a payment plan.
Long story short, come here for a friendly, convenient, quality, and affordable dentist experience.

I never thought the day would come where I would rate ANY dentist 5 stars. A little background– I hate going to the dentist, they scare me and more often than not the visit includes me crying in their chair.
Dr. Beal changed that, not only is he a true perfectionist at what he does, he is nice, funny, and a bit quirky (in a good way).
He came highly recommended from a coworker and since then I have had routine cleanings, porcelain fillings and even a few crowns. Everyone from the receptionist Amy to his hygienist assistant Anya are all extremely pleasant.
Highly recommend to those who suffer a degree of dentist anxiety!

Dr. Beal is skilled, considerate and compassionate. Amy, the receptionist, is an absolute doll. And my hygienist could not be more efficient, thorough and sweet.
I would recommend Dr. Beal to anyone.
He’s done some pretty extensive crown work for me and the results have been perfect.
He’s also had to refer me to an endodontist (Dr. Nasseh) for a root canal, and my visit there was exactly the same – a great experience with every single person I encountered, from the receptionist to Dr. Nasseh himself.

TWICE now they’ve overcharged me on co-​pays.
My deductible is $ 50. Last time, got 2 fillings and they said they were bigger than usual so it’d be $ 250.
It was really early in the morning so I had no energy, nor was I in the state of mind, to protest.
Called my dental insurance compay just now, they said the portion I owed out of pocket was about $ 124. I’m sure they will refund me the difference no problem. What a joke though.
If I keep going here (that’s a goddamn big IF right now…), I will have them bill me for all my co-​pays from now on. No more interest-​free loans for you, Dr. Beal.

Call me crazy, but I love the smell of the dentist’s office. It smells so clean and fresh, and it’s not clammy like a hospital or a doctor’s office. Everything smells like mouthwash and toothpaste. It’s refreshing.
I am one of those few people who do not have any sort of fear of the dentist. I don’t particularly like having my gums and teeth poked at with a metal hook, and I really don’t care for keeping my mouth open for so long, but I don’t put off going to the dentist because I’m afraid. I have this recurring dream of my teeth falling out, so I like to get them checked out to make sure they are packed in tightly. I’ve also seen the same dentist since I was a kid and my experience was always a good one. I was nervous at the idea of having to try a new dentist, but Jocelyn C. recommended Dr. Chu to me so I decided to give it a whirl.
My hygienist was Alana and she was great. Really friendly, super casual, and she was gentle with the cleaning. She took some X-​Rays and explained everything to me in detail, answering all my questions and concerns. Then she hung out and talked for a bit while Dr. Chu was getting ready to see me.
Enter Dr. Chu: Dentist Baller Extraordinaire. I have never, EVER learned so much about teeth before than I did in the ten minutes I sat with her. She explained everything there is to know about how teeth are built, how they work and how we protect them. Then she told me I have beautiful teeth. Excellent to hear considering my recurring dreams about them falling out. I have a couple of appointments scheduled for some fillings that need to be fixed, and some that need to be added, and I’m not in the least bit worried. I know she’s going to kick some filling-​ass.
Total win. Go see Dr. Chu and Alana immediately. There is no need to let your smile go bad :)

I went to see Dr. Beal after reading good reviews on Unilocal.I had a fairly bad experience though.
I showed up for my scheduled appointment and I waited for at least 20 minutes. This was pretty infuriating since I was on my lunch break. I assumed the routine cleaning would take about 30 minutes (which it always has for a cleaning at other places). Little did I know they were going to take at least 30 x-​rays (cutting my mouth several times in the process). The cleaning itself was thorough and fairly gentle. The hygienist however brought up how I had acne and talked about other rather personal issues. Unprofessional in my opinion. And it took about 45 minutes.
I waited another 10 minutes for Dr. Beal to come in after the check up. Although I had no cavities, he pushed me to come back to see a periodontist because one of my gums was «receding». My friend’s mother is a hygienist and she told me that you would not need to see a periodontist unless you were having a lot of pain… my gum was receding very, very slightly. He also tried to push sealants on me. Before I knew it, Dr. Beal had pushed me up to the receptionist and told her to make appointments for me. I called right after I left and cancelled both.
It’s pretty hard for me to believe that a year ago I went to a different dentist and my teeth were great. Dr. Beal found two costly problems… sounds like someone is out to get more money. It took me about 2 hours from start to finish to get a routine cleaning… that is complete bullshit.
I’ll never go back.

The only reason I am giving only 3 stars right now is because I haven’t yet been in to see Dr. Beal.
However, due to the previous post, I think I should post my review of the receptionist services I have experienced thus far.
Dr. Beal comes recommended from coworkers.
I called today (Thursday) because I am experiencing pain. I used to go to another dentist on Newbury street but thought I would switch to Dr. Beal.
The first time I called, there was no answer. I didn’t leave a message. I called back 10 minutes later and got an answer. (I think they don’t answer if they are with a customer — which you would appreciate if you were in the office).
The receptionist was very sweet. She asked a bunch of questions and offered me an appointment on Saturday afternoon. She was understanding when I had to jump off the phone because of a meeting.
An hour later I called to say that if there were any cancellations, I’d love to get in earlier if possible because of the pain and she offered me an appointment on Friday afternoon.
Very accommodating.
UPDATE: Went to the office today. I arrived early and filled out my paperwork. There was another guy sitting there waiting so I asked if the wait was long. The receptionist said «it shouldn’t be too long». 10 minutes later, the other guy (who was getting antsy), asked how much longer it would be and was told approx 20 minutes. So he left to run an errand. I also said I would leave since I hadn’t had lunch yet. Half an hour or so later, I returned. Shortly thereafter, I was called into one of the «rooms». A woman (assistant?) said she was going to take xrays. Didn’t introduce herself or anything, just started shoving things in my mouth. Awesome.
After that, I waited another 10 – 15 minutes for Beal. I told him that if I weren’t in pain, I would have already walked out. It took over an hour for me to be seen!
COMPLETELY inconsiderate. If they are that far behind, they should pick up the phone and let patients know. At least then they can choose whether to come in and wait or reschedule, etc. Part of the reason why I thought this place would be good is because it’s right around the corner from my office. Didn’t think I needed to take off the entire afternoon for what ended up being a 10 minute exam to tell me what i already knew and refer me to an oral surgeon.
Not impressed. And while I still need a cleaning, I might consider finding another new place.
Though I will say that Beal was calm and humored me despite my being really quite upset by everything. He managed to make me smile a bit by the end.
And also must note that the receptionist was very calm, cool & collected. Beal seems to be quite a character, so she must have patience. Though she/​they definitely need to get a better handle on timing. Maybe they schedule too many people, too closely together?
