A Café

Well, it used to be a 5 star calm college late night or late breakfast crêpe place. Then it was a 4 star crêpe café. Then it was a snooty 1 star creperie that couldn’t make sangria because they didn’t have a recipe (wine and fruit — no recipe needed and they used to make it). Now I guess they are closed. Should’ve stuck with the old model.

Love the tapas…, wish they had more choices on the menu. The anchovy tapa is a hit if you are not into the salty anchovies. All the tapas are pretty good. Service has always been good for us. We enjoy Paella night special. Not the best Paella but, it works for us since we don’t know of other places in Boulder that make descent Paella.

My friend and I stopped in on a recommendation. The two dishes we tried were unique and amazing and my coffee snob friend enjoyed her brew. Watermelon gaspatcho was perfectly refreshing on a hot day and the fried avocado had a nutty crust and made for a very pleasant surprise addition to an already tasty salad.
I also loved the bright atmosphere and décor, and the service was was friendly and attentive. Next time I am in town I will definitely be back to try some crepes!

WOW, where should I begin? crêpes sucrées or crêpes salées? They are both awful. You cannot go wrong with Nutella and this is the only that tasted decent, if you screwed this up, closed your shop.

Their Banh Mi was a hands down the worse! For real? Maybe they should have branded Subway.

This is a strange situation. How could I not know where I was in Boulder? Me, the Boulder retail expert among my long time resident peers. I have eaten in this «place» for years. The sign over the door still says Crepes a la Cart. I could not check in on Unilocal under that. The menu says «A Café.» Unilocal let me check in on that. So that is what I will review, but with some history.
First it was a «cart» and there still was one at their other location the last time I was at Flatiron Crossing. Then this one moved into a longtime (and I mean decades long) vacant storefront just off Pearl on Broadway and served fast casual style. Then it was a short term interim remodel, adding waiters instead of counter service. Not much nicer, maybe slower to get a meal, but better seating.
Now it is a totally different place, nice interior, the menu has been expanded beyond crepes, though all we got were crepes. They are better, fancier, with trendier ingredients, more expensive, but a far nicer presentation. Some greens on the side, more than a garnish, less than a salad, and fuller crepes. The food was really good but the service a little pretentious with a few errors, but polite, with good intentions.
I ordered an iced tea. I was brought a pot of hot tea, good Boulder Celestial Seasonings black tea, with a glass with 6 ice cubes. I was told that this is their fresh iced tea system. I could pour the hot tea into the glass, melt the ice and then get more ice to chill it. So I tried. The first pour took it to tepid. The next glass of ice did not appear. I asked for the ice but the waiter forgot until I asked again. I drank the first half of the pot as tepid. It was not bad but not what I wanted. Then I did get the ice for the second half of the pot. This was annoying and I had a table of out of town guests, who were amused. Also, the waiter was the «I don’t need to write it down» genre. He had to check back once to verify one of the orders. Not terrible, but not great. Again, the guests were amused. Not a trend where they live.
The waiter was very polite and moderately mature, not a student part time job type.
So my rating is by rationalization. I got very good food, served by a seemingly nice person, meaning well but missing the mark. I’ll give them another chance. I hope they read this.

A Café is located at the old Crepes a la Carte on Broadway. I’ve never tried any of the savory crepes in this place, but the sweet ones were seriously good. and so was its French Onion Soup and Fried Avocado with Masa Cake appetizer. The Au Chocolat crêpe was rich and not overly sweet, and the apple strudel crêpe was full of apple chunks and raisins. I’ve been here two times in the past month, so I think it’s a good sign.

I just would like you to know that this restaurant is one of Boulder’s secret Gems!
I have visited the restaurant several times during the lunch/​brunch hours. The menu is impressive and the service is impeccable. The staff is friendly and tends to your needs in a very professional manner. If the fancy strikes you, you can sit at a counter and watch the Chef prepare your selection. Food preparation and presentation of this quality is rarely found in a restaurant of this size and price range.
A favorite choice for me is the Low Country Biscuit, which is basically eggs benedict on steroids. On our last visit my wife enjoyed the Pot Pie, and we both gave the Clam Chowder a big «Thumbs Up».
In closing all I will say is «Try it… You’ll like it!»

Just sat down for a late lunch with a glass of Cotes Du Rhone and a recommendation of Lamb Sliders. These were amazing. Had a side salad that was simple and well dressed. Balsamic I believe. Quiet little hidden gem.
