History

Established in 1974.

Friar Tux Shop was founded in May of 1974 in Lakewood, California. In the beginning there was one energetic young man running the shop. From early on, however, there was plenty of family support: Mom provided the catchy name and Dad provided a vision. Brother joined in soon to help with the increase in business. The recipe was simple: stir in lots of selection and quality, then blend this with generous amounts of impeccable customer service and reasonable pricing. Friar Tux Shop was a success!

I don’t have a lot to say. I just went in and created a profile for my groom and his groomsmen and haven’t dealt with them very much. But I really liked how the suits looked together, with my bridesmaids dresses. I went there because I got my dress at Alfred Angelo’s. I highly recommend both shops, but the Alfred Angelo’s at Huntington Beach.

This place was amazing! I searched for hours trying to find a tuxedo shirt in my son’s size and they had everything I needed and more. The employee, George, was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. He stayed after hours in order for me to complete my purchase. Their customer service was outstanding and I will certainly be coming back for all of the tuxedos I need.

This company is so inadequate it’s scary. I had used them once and had a bad experience, however that was 6 years ago. So when my fiancé best friend insisted we use them for our recent wedding I was hesitant but agreed. WELL let me tell you!!! We had 2 gentleman with the same name getting a tux. One was canceled (personal reasons) and the other had already been measured and paid. When the groomsman went to pick up the paid and measured tux the reply he got was «sorry it was cancelled!» He then had to rush over to another location as the wedding was the next day!!!
How is it that they don’t double check! Really two of the same name and one measured, one isn’t!!! I’m shocked, not only is additional training needed. They clearly hire people that lack common sense. WARNING DO NOT SHOP HERE!!!

Wanted to buy a tuxedo. They do not have a tailor for making permanent alterations. Limited fitting experience. No good for buying. I would only consider Friar Tux for rentals.

When I first walked in I thought I was eye-​raped by the sun. The lights satan-​blasted me in the face while at the same time reflected off the neon green, blue and pink vests that were cleverly placed to finish the job of burning your eyes completely out of their sockets. They do this on purpose so that if for whatever strange reason they do allow you to look at what you’re ordering (because they don’t unless you ask like 5 times) you can’t see it anyway. Of course that’s if you make it to the counter before your legs are broken from standing in line for 12 years. When they finally get around to helping you the lights have burned out your eyes, the screaming babies have blown out your ear drums and the standing around for centuries has put both your feet in casts. That of course they have to order, you can only hope they’re signable (they won’t be, we all know). Over all worst dress shop for prom ever. Never is when I’m going back.

So far this place has been awesome! We decided to make a very last minute change to our entire groomsmen party and they were perfect in getting everything together. I got a call to confirm everything and was able to view all the fittings on their website. THEN a week before the wedding we had another change and they didn’t even blink an eye. We’ll be picking up the suits next week so I’ll have to update, but have no doubt they will come through with flying colors.

I went to pick my tuxedo up for my cousin’s wedding — tried everything on and it all fit well BUT then I noticed a large coffee stain on the vest and notified the consultant as soon as I saw it. I was glad I tried it on while still at the shop.
Tania, the consultant, was extremely apologetic at the fact that their was this massive stain on the vest. she keep going to the back where she was asking her assistant manager for suggestions on what she should do several times.
I found it extremely rude for the assistant manager not to take the time to step out and converse with me. instead, she had her employee play messenger. side note, I don’t feel entitled or anything, it was merely just showing respect for what happened to the vest.
Tania then comes back outside to give me my tuxedo minus the vest and says, «our warehouse will have it ready in 30 minutes, here is the address.» assuming I would do out if my way to pick this up. such an inconvenience
so I get to the warehouse to pick my new vest up and the consultant says, «do you know who you were speaking to from Brea because no one placed a reorder for your vest.»
i think out loud and say that the Brea location is extremely disorganized and the consultant, nods his head and agrees a which solidified my decision that
I WILL NOT BE COMING BACK to the Brea Friar Tux location

This place is the most disorganized establishment I have ever been to. I’m currently still waiting to pick up my tux after having been here for an hour and a half. I am understanding it is prom season but this is absolute BS. No one is in control of what is going on and I have yet to be told anything about if and when I will ever be helped. To the owners of this shop. Read a customer service book.

They’re honestly so slow. Waited for a tux for the longest time and all the workers don’t know what they’re doing. After my bf finally got his tux on and off, they went to fold and put away his tux and took FOREVER. We waited longer than when we had to wait for him to get it. And the sales associate was taking her sweet time when she finally got it and kept messing up because she was to busy to try and act cute in front of customers. Get your life together. Yeah it’s busy because it’s prom season but it doesn’t take that long to get a tux out and into the person’s hands.

Not too sure why Friar Tux garnered itself so many negative reviews but we had a great experience with them for our groom and groomsmen’s formal wear.
We had groomsmen from all over northern and southern california and that didn’t pose to be a problem at all!
I had a vision of what I wanted our guys to look like and they were able to put it together, for a good price. They were on point with calling me for any reminders, keeping up with the dates for fittings/​pick ups and took care of whatever 11th hour changes I called in (groom’s fault!).
They didn’t have too much of a large variety, at least in the color scheme I wanted, but nonetheless, our guys looked good.
Pick up and returns were easy as well.

My husband used Friar Tux for our February 2015 wedding & we were not disappointed. The Assistant Manager from the Brea location listened to my concerns & was able to properly fit my husband. All the groomsmen looked great & no complaints reported. Loved that the suits could be mixed & matched according to body type. We plan on returning to purchase a much needed new suit to add to his wardrobe.

Never anything but great service from this location!
We went to Men’s Warehouse originally looking for rental suits for my then fiancé and groomsmen. We were surprised when they only had one rental option in grey… And it wasn’t even a suit! It was a tuxedo! We found exactly what we wanted at Friar Tux and for a much better price! They have a large selection of ties as well; we were able to use a white tie for my husband, purple for the groomsmen and silver for my groomsmen all within our color scheme! They were quick to order pocket squares in the colors not available in the store so I could see in person that they matched the ties. Every employee at this location was great about following up, extremely helpful and courteous. Overall a great experiences and all the men looked amazing in their suits!
