My boyfriend and I found a place on Craigslist that we liked for $ 1600 in Washington Square, it was a big out of my price range by oh about– $ 200 –but I was wondering if the landlord was likely to haggle the rent for great tenants. I sent him a message letting him know what we were looking for. This is the actual text of the first e-​mail:
«We are a mid-​twenties professional couple who are very interested in this 1 bedroom apartment in Washington Square. However, I think the price might be a little out of our budget considering we’re looking more in the 1350 – 1400 range. We’re also looking for a place like this – a 1 bedroom with an office-​like area. Or a 2 bedroom somewhere in that range. We’d be willing to have the landlord rent out any parking spots, too, for a cut in our rent. Any chance this could be a possibility? If so, we’d gladly view the apartment this weekend.»
He wrote back and assured me he had many places in our price range comparable to the place pictured. When we met up to look at places we were sadly disappointed.
The places were no were NEAR comparable. One was in the depths of Brighton, (which wouldn’t be a problem if the places were actually gorgeous inside) but these places (even the ones near the T) were dirty, scummy, and also guess what? He showed us 3 One-​Bedroom places WITHOUT an office – Exactly what I didn’t ask for.
It was really frustrating and made worse by the fact that the places he showed us were so slummy. I know that we have a low budget but these apartments were dirty, dirty, dirty. He wasted our time, didn’t listen to what I was looking for and because of that, I won’t be going back there to look for places.
I actually felt a little bad for a minute writing this, the guy who showed us the place wasn’t a BAD guy, but man, it’s only hurting him not to listen to what his client’s looking for.
