History

Established in 1977.

Conceived and founded by Paul Binder to be a leading presenter of live family entertainment and a not-for-profit performing arts institution, our nation-wide performances and community programs have made our 34-year history far-reaching and full.

It all began in Kent, England, in 1974, when American entertainers Paul Binder and Big Apple Circus co-founder Michael Christensen became juggling partners and took to the street corners of Europe.

Their comedic juggling act was a hit, and they soon found themselves on the stage of the presitigous Nouveau Cirque de Paris. They returned home to America in 1976 with a vision: to entertain and improve the lives of millions. One year later, they found a site for the first tent-raising in Battery Park, New York, and went on to create the award-winning, not-for-profit Big Apple Circus.

Meet the Manager

Guillaume D.

Manager

Born and raised in Bordeaux, France, Guillaume abandoned a possible career path as an engineer or math teacher to join the circus. After a short stint at the Conservatoire National des Arts du Cirque in Paris, Guillaume and his partner Frédérique Vanetti created an aerial perch act, named Les Casaly, and went on to perform in France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, and Finland. Guillaume then joined forces with a new partner, Mireille Fenwick, to work on a spectacular aerial cradle-casting act, under the guidance of Jean Palacy, one of the world’s foremost specialists in this difficult discipline. With Les Casaly, Guillaume won a Silver Medal at the Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain in Paris in 1986. Les Casaly performed their extraordinary act with Switzerland’s Circus Nock, with the French National Circus (Cirque Gruss), and, from 1987 to 1990, with the Big Apple Circus. They also appeared on American television in «Seven Wonders of the Circus World» and «Great Circuses of the World.
