Brooklyn Beer & Soda

I have passed Brooklyn Beer & Soda many a time and went in. Well, no more! No more will I buy beer from a crappy grocery store or bodega selection!
There are sodas and non-​alcoholic beverages galore! But, more importantly, a plethora of craft beer located at the far left and far right of the warehouse-​esque store.
AND they let me bring my dog in. Dog walk/​beer run. Nice.

Imagine a cross between Walmart and Bloomingdales, and imagine it’s full of beer. This place is an endless warehouse of any flavor you could want at any price point. Rare and toppiest-​top shelf included. Impressive selection of chilled stuff if you’re on the run (i.e. you need to smuggle some brews to Coney Island).
HUGE bonus points for carrying Southern Tier stuff even when it’s out of season. They keep their
listings relatively up to date too.

From the outside this store looks like a typical liquor store, but inside there is a surprisingly good beer selection and reasonable prices. This place is a bit out of the way for me but worth the trip when I’m looking for some of my favorite harder to find stout and dark beers. The only drawback is that the store doesn’t seem to move some of its inventory often, so beware if you’re buying a beer with a shorter than average shelf life.

First things first, the prices are maybe slightly higher than some other similar places that I’ve been too but overall, it’s nothing too serious. They have a very large selection of craft brews already chilled and plenty of inventory packaged to go. There also a number of taps for you come in and fill your growlers which is always a plus for a last minute party or gathering.

This is my go-​to beer store. Why? I live like 5 blocks away. Still though I came here a few times before moving into the area. The people working here are really friendly but not that knowledgeable about beer except for the owners (husband and wife). They’re awesome and are always willing to hold stuff for you within reason (especially if they know you). Still the rest of the staff always tries their best which is rare among beer stores nowadays. Don’t expect any frills otherwise as the place is literally a warehouse.
The word here is selection. They recently took over the adjacent store front (awning is still up) just to expand further. If you want to buy beer in bulk around this area, this is where you should get it as their prices tend to be lower. On other items their pricing can be uneven but generally competitive. Either way if you’re looking for something specific they’ll tend to have it; if not, they actually will try and order it if you ask. If there’s a beer that hits NYC, in all likelihood they will get it at some point. The only negatives here are that they do gouge a bit on some rarities (ex. Firestone Walker limited releases), there are some items that sit out for awhile (check dates, this can work in your favor sometimes though), and some of the stock sits where there is a bit too much sunlight for my tastes. These are significant drawbacks but in light of the pluses Brooklyn Beer still ends up being a great place in my opinion. Also they have Mexican Coke and Manhattan Special in bulk. What more needs to be said?

I wasn’t expecting a good beer selection in my new hood. It feels more like a beer warehouse than a store. I used to buy my overpriced artisanal beers at BKLYN Larder (which still has very unique, if small, selection). I found this place has the best overall selection I’ve seen in Brooklyn, and includes lots of small producers. The prices are reasonable (by BKLYN Larder standards). I’d guess about 90% of the store is dedicated to your typical weak, popular lagers. But the remainder is pretty good, if not too adventurous, including your larger craft beer producers, local options (like Evil Twin), and around 10 taps where you can fill your growler. If they were a little more adventurous/​curated in their craft beer choices, they’d be a clear 5 stars.

Closer to a 4.5 ranking. This is possibly the best beer selection in Brooklyn– Craft and Imports. My only complaint is the price– some of the beers I can get in Manhattan for cheaper and that’s not cool. However, in terms of selection this place is almost unrivaled. They have everything– from the watered down American piss beer to the absolute Ratebeer 100 Belgian and Russian Imperials. They even have some rare bottles on sale as singles– stuff like Brooklyn Monster from 2012+13 and the elusive Samuel Smith
Yorkshire Stingo (which at $ 16 for a pint bottle is absurd) and I think they are the only place to carry this beer. There are lots of local taps for the growler lovers, that’s not really my thing but they have 20 taps I think so have fun. The staff is extremely nice, most of them are bilingual (Spanish/​English) and it’s nice to be able to come in and speak Spanish with them. I’m new in the neighborhood but this is sure to become my go to place for great beer!!! Such a cool store!!!

This place is great. Their beer selection is diverse, and has various prices. If you need pretty much any kind of beer, they’re likely to have it.
The reason I’m giving them 4 stars instead of 5, is because they really need more refrigerators. If you’re looking for IPAs in the summer, it’s really best to either buy something that’s in the fridge and take a chance, or go elsewhere. I’ve purchased beers that were stored too hot, and spoiled. This is not an issue in the winter, as the whole place is kept barely above 40° F.
In sum: 3 stars in summer, 5 when its cold out. Average of 4 stars.

Great beer selection. Bring your growler they have a great draft selection. And be sure to pick up some of the neighborhood brew (not locally brewed, but drunk by the locals) Dragon Stout.

Sweet place!
I was surprised by the large selection of beers. They have lots of beer available warm as well as a refrigerated section. You can shop here with confidence if you’re going to a party where there may be some beer snobs (either the cool kind or the asshat kind) because you’ll be able to find something good.
The place is clean and all the staff there were super friendly. They also had a variety of seltzer waters and I love having seltzer options!
Definitely a solid beer option on Flatbush Ave

The name says it all. When I foolishly wandered in here thinking they might have wine, I was soundly proven wrong. Just BEER AND SODA lady! Luckily, BBS has such a huge selection of beers that I found exactly what I needed for my New Years Eve party. No champagne? I got sparkling cider from France. No red wine? Picked up a Cassis Lambic that went perfectly with the cheese I was serving. This place truly has everything in the beer/​soda variety that your little heart could desire. There’s a method to the madness in terms of layout as well, so don’t be too overwhelmed by the size of the place. Things seem to be generally organized by category and the staff is really helpful if you’re totally lost. Can’t wait to try out the wide range of ciders and Belgian-​style beers they have here.

They have an awesome selection of craft beer, just don’t go in hoping for a lot of guidance from the staff. If you can navigate your way through a HUGE variety of beers on your own, you’ll be fine. If not, you may be better off at a grocery store or bodega. I found an excellent Belgian Tripel here that I’ve only seen in two other places in the entire city. It was a great find.
As for prices, this place isn’t the most competitive. You can probably get a better deal at Whole Foods on craft beer than here, but the selection is impressive.

I ordered from here, and the delivery was prompt, had good customer service, AND they are kind enough with stuff I needed afterwards. Ordered all my party beer, my mixers, sparkling water and ice. They would only take back some of my overage, though. So order carefully.

I don’t live nearby so I’m not running in here to get a six pack (although the selection is damn good), but if you need beer in bulk, this is probably your best bet.
After calling around to several distributors in the area, the keg prices at Brooklyn Beer & Soda seem to be better than most of their competitors, and that includes delivery (and ice if you need it). They’ve only got a few different types of kegs on hand, but they’ll order pretty much anything you want if you give them enough notice.
So have a party, and get a keg here. But if you don’t finish it, I wouldn’t recommend carrying the remainder home and setting it on your new rug, expecting your girlfriend to be pleased that you have beer for the week.
She will not be pleased.

Talk about the Candy Land of Beer! Discovered this while walking through the ‘hood.
It has every kind of beer you can imagine. From bottles to growlers this place will satisfy the pbr lover to the beer snob. I have a Framboise addiction and was happy to find this beer here and at similar prices to other stores.
If you need to buy in bulk come here! The reason I deducted one star was due to the organization. This place is a maze but the staff will help you out.

If there’s a beer heaven… then this must be it! I came here based on a recommendation from a friend and I’m so glad I did. I love trying all kinds of new beers that I’ve never tried before. I find myself giddy like a kid on Christmas morning when I get to try new beers that I’ve never had before.
Now I’ve had a lot of different beers. But I nearly shed a tear when I saw the massive selection of various beers from around the world, many of which I had never even heard of! I know the sell soda there as well, but my eyes wouldn’t even allow me to see them because I was in awe from the various amounts of beers.
If you fancy yourself a beer drinker… then you MUST go to Brooklyn Beer and Soda.

This place gets away with being awesome because it’s not near a subway, which means if you want to buy beer for your restaurant in bulk or buy some craft beers, you’re hoofing it to the Atlantic Center (a good 15 minutes away walking) before you find a way to get home.
That said, as of July ’11, this was the only place in all of New York you could find Southern Tier Crème Brulee Stout, and though I haven’t had a sip of it yet, I’m super excited to try it. And the rhaspberry wheat beer I got, and the Hooker Blonde* and … well, I didn’t keep going at that point, because it was a long walk home and I didn’t have any desire to drop anything because it was too heavy.
If you’re looking to stock up on cheaper beers, they have a plethora of the basics (Buds, Lights, etc.) for fairly cheap prices (under $ 8 for a six pack), rent a ZipCar and come by and get your fill.
Just don’t hang out next to the cold cases with the craft beers — you’ll end up buying one of everything. Craft beer makers are just so clever with the titles.

Brooklyn Beer & Soda is a local, well-​kept secret in Prospect Heights.
It’s at least a 10 – 15 minute walk from the nearest subway; suffice to say, this place doesn’t get a lot of foot traffic from tourists across the river.
A hybrid between your well-​stocked bodega and your specialty craft-​beer store, Brooklyn Beer & Soda reminds me of a suburban Costco. Pallets of well-​known domestic brands (Coors, Bud, Natural Light) are lined up in pretty little rows on the left hand side of the store; decent East and West Coast domestic brews (Saranac, Smuttynose) guard the center; imports sold by the big multinational beer companies under the guise of craft beer (Grolsch, Stella Artois) flank the right.
But if you’re not a frat brother or someone who deludes themselves into having good taste in beer, the good sh*t is in the fridge on the far left and on the shelf behind the front counter. Highlights include the entire range of Unibroue (North America’s finest brewery), big bottle formats of Belgium lambics and «Grand Cru» ales (Cantillon, Fantome, Girardin, Oud Beersel), and obscure domestic labels that one would struggle to find in any retail store. They also have a decent selection of 10 – 12 beers on draft that you can carry out in a 32 or 64 oz. growler format.
I have no problem with the service at Brooklyn Beer & Soda (I know what I want, and how to get it), but I could see someone being frustrated by the lack of beer knowledge among the staff. This is not Bierkraft: the staff doesn’t look like it literally eats, sleeps, brews, and drinks beer.
As a side note, they do stock a fine range of obscure carbonated sodas (Ting, Manhattan Espresso Coffee Soda), malt liquors in 40 oz formats, as well as most of the wine (cooler) portfolio of Bartles & James. (Pomegranate is my favorite.)

This is a craft beer *mecca*.
The selection might slightly border on ridiculous, and if I didn’t prosper so much from it, I might given in to the urge to call it that. Picture the average Manhattan supermarket size, double it, and fill it entirely with beer and (a little bit of) soda. That’s Brooklyn Beer & Soda… it’s obvious where the emphasis is placed.
Come here for the amazing craft beer selection (I found Coney Island Freaktoberfest, which I hadn’t even seen in the bars last fall, and Goose Island Pere Jacques today) at good prices for what you’re getting. If it’s a craft beer then they most likely have it. We’re talking Coney Island, Goose Island, Dogfish Head, Brooklyn Brewery, Blue Point, Smuttynose, Southern Tier, etc etc. I will most definitely be back.
(hint: don’t waste your time on «that» kind of beer… you know, Miller, Coors, Heineken, etc; the prices for those cease to be good, which is right in line with how they taste)
