Business Owner

When owner Gaia DiLoreto left the corporate world in October 2009, she fell headfirst into Brooklyn’s red-​hot restaurant scene, enrolling in a restaurant management course at the Institute of Culinary Education and refining her palate on local specialties. Soon after, she focused on opening a single destination that provides an array of Brooklyn-​made culinary and shopping picks.

i visited this store to purchase a care package of «made only in brooklyn» items.
i ended up spending a fortune…
yes, i love supporting local vendors. but its wayyy too overpriced… why would i purchase an item made in brooklyn if something made in texas is significantly cheaper? i’m not rich enough for this.
its too bad, because i think i would come more often if they were more reasonable.

Came to By Brooklyn for the Frenchie party! It was to benefit dog shelters and SO many people brought their French bulldogs and other dogs. It cost $ 15 but all drinks were included, and it was $ 10 if you brought your dog. It was all sorts of fun, and their backyard is amazing.
I could go on and on about the cute dogs, but this is a review for the shop. By Brooklyn, as its name suggests, is all about goods made locally. They have things like hot sauce (Mike’s Hot Honey!), t-​shirts, books, tote bags, artwork, and all sorts of other stuff. Not exactly cheap, but you pay for quality and to support local businesses.
Stop by and up your hipster cred with some Brooklyn merch that doesn’t have that terrible Brooklyn Nets logo on it.

This was a great little find on my walk into Downtown Brooklyn. The shop features locally made crafts and gifts– including soap, trinkets, food, cards, and more! I love bringing local and unique gifts home, and this place fit the bill perfectly!

This shop is oddly here, but not in Williamsburg or Bushwick, and boasts a Unilocal checkin for a free Liddabit sea salt caramel ($ 0.50 value). Couldn’t find Davis’ Famous’ Pistachio Crack Brittle and was informed they no longer carry Mike’s Hot Honey because it’s no longer made in BK.

I stopped in this store last night on my way out to dinner. Browsing around a feeling of sadness grew in my heart because this is the new Brooklyn; it’s over-​priced and twee.
That said, I’m glad this shop is here because if you’re in a hurry you can run in and grab a nice looking jar of artisanal jam for $ 15 for your boss or mother-​in-​law.
However if you want something great from the real Brooklyn walk a few blocks to Caputos, D’amicos, Sahadi’s.

Great store! Amazing range of locally made items by super clever arty folks. You could easily buy a gift for anyone between the age of zero and maybe 100.

this place has some amazing gifts for every occasion, but the prices are insane!!! the staff tends to be stuck up and cold and i have been here on a few occasions where staff members were talking openly about some rather taboo topics. i’m not one to feel uncomfortable, but i can see the stroller pushing yuppie mothers that have taken over this neighborhood not approving.
i will go here in a pinch if i need a gift, but the prices need to come down… a lot.

Oddly a lot of reviewers mentioned that the store is pricey and yet still gave it four or five stars. It’s extremely pricey – most of the items are priced quite high for what they are. It’s great to have things made in Brooklyn, but shouldn’t we encourage more affordable shopping as well?
Some of the food items are very appealing in their packaging, like the peanut butters and the cookies.
The friendliness of the staff is unpredictable, I guess it depends on who you get – they aren’t always so warm to customers who shop by themselves or are just browsing.

OK, myopic clientele with Brooklyn set as standard above the clouds BUT then again when you see the diversity of goods that are «made in Brooklyn» your head spins. Everything from organic compost, children books, honey, mustard and soaps to jewelry and mayonnaise even. Eclectic without a doubt but shockingly variant as well. Great spot for locals and gifts to take away if just visiting.

Can this place be any cuter? I honestly don’t venture out to this part of Brooklyn, but I was in the area for that huge newly opened market a couple blocks away. Anyway, stopped in here to look for a certain condiment, which was unfortunately sold out. We ended up picking up something else, they sell cookies from The Good Batch as well. The prices can be a bit on the high side, but you have to love how everything is made in Brooklyn. Check in for a free sea salt caramel, yum. Maybe I’ll be back to check if the condiment is available next time!

I love this store!!! If you need any kind of amazing gift item for anyone, man, woman or child come here. It’s well stocked with any and everything. From really amazing jewelry made by jewelry designers in Brooklyn to yummy food items you can give as housewarming or hostess gifts to great spa packages for a tired mom or dad.
Everything in the shop is made by an artisan in Brooklyn (see the theme) and really well thought out.

This year I decided to send my Arkansas family Brooklyn themed gift boxes full of the local fare you just can’t find down south and this store was a great spot. The people working were nice and friendly and everything in the store was worth a closer look. My sister loves pickles so she got some Brooklyn Brine and my name is actually Brooklyn also so my mom got the Brooklyn Loves You Dish Towel for example. Will shop here again.

After explaining that I had just lost my job and needed to return a gift I had recently bought here, the owner told me she «couldn’t afford» to permit the return. Policy is policy, you know. No exceptions. Especially lot by a small local business — what would the people back at corporate say? Oh wait.
First of all, judging by the prices an clientele here, I beg to differ. You can afford it. Secondly, YOU can’t afford it? I just told you I got laid off. Cool policy.

It brings me such pleasure to review by brooklyn as a jeweler yeah for sure, but also as a gift shop and community activity center and overall asset to the neighborhood.
So many places have now jumped on this being and buying local bandwagon — which is great — that when you encounter the real deal it’s sometimes shocking. And By brooklyn is totally the real deal. It’s varied, it’s creative, it’s original. Terrarium making classes, peanut butter tastings, puppy parties — I mean that was the last few months, the list goes on and on! Aside from stopping in when you need a birthday gift people will actually like, follow them on twitter or fb and maybe they have a newsletter, not sure about that one.
I definitely follow them on fb and my life’s the richer for it.

Ooo I just loved walking around By Brooklyn. It’s so warm and so inviting, and the staffer (or the owner?) behind the counter was just so friendly and smiley.
The items around the store are all pretty fantastic. From little round magnets of the BK bridge to jars of locally made honey and salsas, its kind of the perfect little spot to pick up gifts for friends/​fam coming to visit … or maybe just for me, just because.
Whatever your reason is for shopping… if you’re wandering down Smith St. you should definitely stop in. It’s too cute & local stuff is just too awesome not to.

I’d normally give this place four stars – it’s cute and has a great concept – but is bumped up to five by the exceptional service.
I’d been meaning to check this place out, and it must have been fate as I stumbled on it with time to kill while in the area. Turns out the store was closing in about ten minutes, but the owner (also running the register) assured me I could take my time and didn’t make me feel rushed at all. It’s pretty easy to get through the store quickly as everything is arranged neatly, and I was happy to see and pick out several products I’d read about, like blueberry-​bourbon jam and Rescue Chocolates, where the proceeds go to animal shelters.
I do wish things were a little less expensive, but I get it – supporting local artisans, all that good stuff. I had a great conversation with the owner about Brooklyn’s production/​manufacturing history, and I definitely like that she’s trying to keep that tradition alive and provide a venue for local products. She’s also very familiar with everything she stocks and was able to answer the questions I had. Service like that keeps me coming back!

By Brooklyn is FILLED with things that are cute, useful, tasty, and downright awesome. You can get hibiscus syrup for whoever in your family loves the SodaStream. You can get delicious salty brown butter cookies from The Good Batch that once you taste, you will keep all to yourself. You can get terrarium Chanakuh bush ornaments, local cookbooks, candy, t-​shirts, chocolates, jewelry and a stereo disguised as art.
Buy things for yourself, buy things for your family, and definitely buy things for people who don’t live in Brooklyn because that’s killing two birds with the one, locally-​made stone:
1. You got them an awesome gift.
2. You get to [somewhat subtly] rub it in their face that Brooklyn is just better than wherever it is that they live. Although, chances are they already knew.
