History

Established in 1978.

Karen and Clementine (KC in the KC arts) were art major college students (and monthers as well) when they decided to start their own art supply store before even graduating from college. Why? Because all the art supply store they shopped in were never staffed with friendly knowledgeable sales people. So, they felt they would be able do better then all the other art supply stores in the NYC area. Then shortly after the 1st year in business, they also realized a need for Quality Custom picture framing. Clementine always had a great sense of design and color. With an Italian woodworking background, framing just came naturally. She had her Brother learn the trade of picture framing from some of the best in the business. Then her son Ralph took an interest in the business while he was just a freshman in high school. Ralph Took the framing side of the business to what it is today.

Nice family owned store. Nice staff who were helpful and knowledgeable. Frames at decent prices. I brought one in that was a standard size and one that was a custom size. Both are being redone for reasonable price. And they can help with replacing wires on back of bigger paintings — which is great!

Top knotch custom framing. I’ve used them for large and small framing jobs, many involving antique maps and prints requiring special care. Staff is knowledgeable and enthusiastic, quality is high, price is fair and work is done quickly. 100% satisfied.

I think this shop is a gem and I hope it stays in business when michaels opens on Atlantic. That being said, their customer service is bad at best. I was in today and the employees were too busy chatting about movies to say hello or offer any assistance. When I did ask a question they seemed put out and did not know the answer and did not seem to care to provide an answer. This question about a product they carry.
I always try to support the small shops but with lack of care towards the customers I don’t see why I would ever come back.

Highly recommend for custom framing — top notch work and very courteous, personal service. Very patient with decision-​making on framing and matting; they take pride in doing a professional job; they delayed one job because after inspecting the frame when it came in they found it imperfect so sent it back and communicated with me by text as I requested; and when I brought back a piece because it had fallen off the wall and the glass shattered a 2nd time, I was immediately serviced at no charge. Pleasant people and they will work with you!!!

Alex was amazingly nice, and helped to select the best frame for the pieces — I had 5 done — in a very simple — no matting, no glass — option. The pieces look really great — they finished in 3 days. And I got a discount for doing several pieces. I would go again.

The owner of this store pays his employees meager wages «off-​the-​books». This, combined with the dangerous conditions associated with framing in particular, creates serious risk for the employees (no worker’s comp, no guarantee of basic federal workplace standards, and so forth). Further, the owner makes sexually explicit comments to his female staff, and hires and fires on emotional whim.

KC is a small artists supply shop with a frame operation in back. I’ve had 10 or so prints framed at KC over the years, as well as one antique Chinese scroll, and they’ve done a great job. You get a 10% discount on custom framing after the first one. Everyone there is helpful and friendly, and the staff overall have had a good eye for mat colors and framing options.
I recently visited when I had bought an off-​the-​shelf frame where the mat was the wrong size for the old magazine it was to display. I went in figuring I had to jerry-​rig something, but the guy in the framing department was super helpful and proactive, offering to cut a custom mat and set it in the frame. $ 20 — great deal, came out looking fantastic.

Worst art store in Brooklyn. Unless you are a park slope/​Carroll garden mom shopping for some crafts you should avoid this place. Everything is expensive and the frame shop is a joke. I went to ask a price on just a frame. When I first went, I was quoted 100 bucks, totally great price for a sale item. Then when I spent the time to lug my print and glass over there all of the sudden it was 350… AT 50% OFF!!? You’re telling me that you would normally charge 700 bucks for JUST a frame on something not over sized? No mat or glass? One of the girls was a moron and I’ll never find out which one. You know what you can go do to yourself.

This place is the worst. Super, super overpriced — especially the framing. The framing is also rushed, there’s not enough room to really go through your options, the selection is tiny, and the staff doesn’t seem that interested in making customers happy. I’ve been to fancy places in Manhattan who frame for less and do a much better job. For a «mom and pop» neighborhood store, the employees should really be friendlier.
The best framing situation I’ve ever experienced is just a few blocks away on Atlantic at Make A Frame — really artistic, professional, chill environment, loads of options, clear communication, and beautiful work.

I just had a fantastic framing experience. After reading Unilocal reviews, I decided to go to Make a Frame on Atlantic but couldn’t afford to get the two pieces I wanted done. I went to KC Art Supply after leaving one of my prints at the other place. KC accommodated my budget, they do all their framing on site (unlike Make a Frame) and in half the time it takes Makes a Frame. AND they do local delivery (also unlike Make a Frame). I even got help installing my large art work. I’m so sorry I didn’t come to KC for all my framing needs first. I highly recommend KC Art Supply for any serious framing!!! In particular, working with Lauren was a pleasure. She was knowledgeable and honest.

I was given a gift certificate by my dad, brought in a few prints for framing. Spent more than the gift, but got outstanding customer service – smart, practical, no upsell for unnecessary bells and whistles – with pretty quick turn around and explanation of everything the whole way through. This kind of neighborhood store is exactly what people bemoan the lack of nowadays but they’re still around. Price wasn’t cheap but framing never is, and I was happy to exchange it for such a high level of service.

Stopped in on Christmas eve, a high maintenance customer with zero background in fabrication and a half formed art project gift idea. The shop was super busy but the staff was great– walking me through my options, offering ideas and expertise, and generally being super kind, patient, and professional during the peak of holiday rush. Prices are high, but it’s local and independent.

I love having a nice, indie art store like this in the neighborhood — it’s not just framing and art supplies, but also pens and ink, cards, wrapping paper, candles … a great place for a hostess gift or a little something for yourself.
I got a lovely Halloween mask and their wreaths are beautiful and unusual.
If you think it’s just tubes of acrylic paint, you’re missing out. (Though obviously, they’ve got that, too.)

I’m not a huge fan of this place but it’s nice that it’s here, does that make sense? It’s an art/​framing store whose prices are a little high and whose service can be hit or miss depending on who’s helping (or not helping) you. I dropped off a small poster to be mounted (not matted or framed) and they told me it would take about 9 days to get done (which it did). If you have a drink with you, leave it outside because there is no food or drink allowed in the store either. If you’re a high school junior looking for a sketch book or something to scribble your teenage angst into, find a different store because they don’t allow people under 18 in without adult supervision.

This place is really close to my house. I’ve had a couple of things framed here and it cost what seemed like a fortune, but I think framing is expensive no matter where you have it done. In any case they did a good job and were courteous enough.
The real reason I like K.C., though, is they have an oddly great selection of art supplies. Paints, paper, brushes, books, crafts stuff… if you need it, they probably have it or at least a reasonable substitute or facsimile.
The prices are highish but that’s what happens when you shop at local stores. There’s a reason scummy superstores like Walmart are driving small businesses into obscurity. However, the convenient location and personal, cheerful service make the extra cost completely worth it to me.
And their occasional sales are killer. I just saved 50% on a desk calendar with vintage art prints of mobile homes. Finally, that trailer park découpage project I’ve always dreamed about can come to fruition…

Think of this as a general stationery store with some frames too rather than the other way around.
Adding legal paper would make it better.
