My four year old is in her second(and final) year at Chickpeas and I cannot say enough about the environment. The teachers are incredibly skilled and so supportive of children’s growth in every way, you’re always invited to stay and read a story to your child in the morning at drop off, plus affordable after-school hours in a nurturing environment; it simply can’t be beat. I went to an open house and was sold in a heartbeat by the teacher’s presentation, as it stood out among the few other preschool’s open houses I’d attended(which were good too). Chickpeas is a parent-run coop, so you get the perks of a caring and involved community. I very highly recommend attending an open house. Our daughter has so naturally blossomed in every way at Chickpeas and I look forward when our younger one gets to go.

Like all the other crazy helicopter parents around here, we meticulously researched preschools around Park Slope, and Chickpeas was hands down our favorite. The teachers are resourceful, resilient, brilliant, and empathic; the environment is stimulating, nurturing and safe; the community is so strong. If you want to be part of making a great school run, this is the place to be. Admittedly, it will break your heart when it’s over, but it’s worth it.

I have four children, one in college, 2 who went to Chickpeas, and one who is currently attending. It is and was a defining experience for my children. I can say with confidence that Chickpeas has the best teachers and program in the area, if not in Brooklyn! As a parent run coop, we strive to bring diversity as well as an open and warm classroom environment to our students and families. The teachers well prepare the students to enter Kindergarten and beyond! It is an experience that your whole family will be enriched with for the rest of your lives.

Chickpeas is a cooperative pre-school with a mix of 3s and Pre-K kids in a warm, friendly, clean space. The teachers are caring and knowledgeable and committed to creating a welcoming, diverse, inclusive classroom setting. Their pedagogical approach is based on the Bank Street method, but they adapt it each year to fit the needs of the kids in the class. Our child is loving all the special activities that happen at Chickpeas(music! drumming! movement!) and adores the teachers. The cooperative aspect means that the parents run the school. The only paid staff are the teachers. This means that the parents definitely have more responsibility than in your standard preschool, but it also means that there’s a real sense of community with the families and a sense of ownership because you’re the one making the decisions about how things run. Can’t recommend it highly enough.
