Cosmo Prete was one of the pioneers of the Williamsburg business district. He has been buying selling and collecting unique examples of modern and industrial design for years and has developed a reputation for having great taste and vision represented in the selection of merchandise that has been presented and sold in his shop in Williamsburg for over 10 years.

If you have been to Cosmo’s you know that if nothing else he is somewhat of a mysterious character. Cosmo Prete’s past includes having been a fine arts photographer and instructor. When he was exhibiting in New York galleries his work made it’s way into the the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His aesthetic sensibilty shows in the collection OF interesting and unusual objects that populate his shop amongst the sofas, chairs, tables, desks and lamps.

Beautiful stuff, but the woman inside is nasty or crazy. I went inside and waited while she was on the phone. My son, who is very calm and gentle, touched a chair. She went ballistic and threw me out of the store. She yelled at me as though I did something horrible to her. When I questioned if it was her store, she said that the owner told her she can throw people out.
The store is too expensive anyway.
They really need to get someone else working in there!

I have been stopping by/​shopping at this place for years. They have always had amazing finds, certainly not bargains but I wouldn’t say overpriced considering the inventory they keep.
I unfortunately have two big problems with this place.
1. The man that is usually here is very surly and makes me so uncomfortable I feel I should leave.
2. I like to start my day early (by NYC standards anyway) so when stores don’t open till noon it can be annoying for me, I deal and that’s not my complaint. Many times it still has it’s gate down well after 12 and that is my complaint.
Today same thing happened. I was there at noon gates down. Bought stuff next door at Jakes (friendliest store ever) then left. I drove by half hour later and saw a girl opening the gates so parked and finally got my gander back in this place. Was happy when I saw a sweet looking girl opening it too! But nope she was just as surly as the older man.
Be nice!

All of you who have left a review that this is overpriced junk obviously have no cultural education and probably should stick to shopping at junk shops.
Amazing range.
Great attention to restoration detail.
Mostly reasonable prices but often priced at full retail.
Only shop here if you have good taste and appreciate quality.

The stuff is decent, but the prices are ridiculous. We’re talking salvaged and vintage items, not priceless antiques. Its rusty steel, and old beat up wood dragged out of some old warehouse, or someones basement, but the stuff is priced as if its extinct Honduran Rosewood with hand gilding and King Midas himself sat on it and scratched his butt.
Its kind of a shame, because if it was priced reasonably, it would be great and they would move inventory, but its not, therefor you find yourself walk in thinking «hmmm, thats kind of neat, maybe I could make that piece work in my place» then you flip over the tag and look at the price and think «F that! Are they nuts?»

Cosmo carries quite high end vintage modern, and for the most part the pieces have been refinished or restored so that they are ready to use. Prices may be shocking at times, but I found that he is pricing fairly. The point is that the stuff he carries is for people who really pay attention to detail, and so if that’s not your bag, you might want to seek cheaper outlets. We bought a nice bedroom set, and he cut us a good deal, was pleasant in doing so, and offered nice pointers on care, etc. We looked at 5 – 6 other vintage modern places (including Two Jakes next door), and nothing came close to the quality and finish of the pieces that Cosmo carried.

Someday, when I am rich, I will partially decorate my home with the furniture that is sold here. I can never walk in without experiencing unrequited-​inanimate object-​love of some kind. Though I’ve only made one purchase (a tiny vintage desk lamp for my boyfriend) at the price of $ 60 (probably the least expensive item available), I can safely say that the owners/​employees love the stuff they sell. I put the lamp on hold and when I came to pick it up it was *gleaming*. The gentleman behind the counter had polished and cleaned it for me, free of charge. My one complaint is that he didn’t have anything other than a plastic grocery bag to put my purchase into.
