Dumbo Hardware

I think this is a family-​run store, which I like. The staff are pleasant and helpful. Unfortunately, their paint machine was inaccurate so it mixed the wrong color for me. While this seems like a disaster, fortunately we quite liked the wrongly-​mixed color. Also, they kindly gave us 2 replacement gallons of the color with their sincere apologies. I believe the machine is fixed now and I wouldn’t hesitate to go back, they are really nice people which is most important.

Poor service. We have had to use this store 3 – 4 for work because it’s the only hardware in dumbo. 3 times we’ve bought paint and had to return it because each time they mix the wrong colors. They use the worst quality products and are not very helpful.

I had a couple of paint samples mixed here: a deep gray and a deep brown.
I got home, opened them up, and they were stark white. I don’t think they actually mixed them.

Just moved to dumbo and I was happy to fun this place is just a few minutes walk from my place.
Went in to copy a few keys which they were able to finish super fast. They have a really good selection of paints. They also carry a wide range of general hardware store items and the prices are not that much more than you would find in Home Depot.
Would have given them 4 stars but unfortunately the employees weren’t exactly nice. Kind of just dead faced me with minimal interaction. Still a good spot.

Save your receipt, get their name and get everything in writing.
Perhaps the cashiers have a «product return quota» they need to meet; but if you try to return anything here w/​a receipt; there’s a good chance they will try to deny you that return. Save your receipt, get their name and get everything in writing.
I purchased one of those «eco-​saver» lightbulbs a few weeks ago. Before paying, I asked the guy if I could return it because I wasn’t entirely sure I remembered the wattage I needed. The guy nodded, said «yes, with a receipt». Noted.
I drop by two weeks later to return the lightbulb because of course I got the wattage wrong.
The same guy as before was attending the counter; I ask to return the lightbulb, the guy looks at my receipt and tells me I can’t return this as I had purchased this more than 6 weeks ago.
I tell him firmly, no, it was two weeks ago. He glances at the receipt and asks ME, am I sure (without showing me the receipt mind you…)
I snarkily suggest that he scan the bar code on the receipt in case the receipt’s ink had rubbed the date off. He awkwardly declines my suggestion.
He plays with the cashier computer for a few minutes then tells me that I can only receive store credit.
I again firmly tell him that I explicitly asked HIM two weeks ago if I could return this with the receipt. He goes back to the cash register seemingly with his tail between his legs.
As he is finally handing me back my money; he makes one last ditch attempt; «Do you need another light-​bulb?»
No, thank you, I’d prefer to go out of my way than give this business my money.
Shop here only if you must, otherwise, just light a candle for the night, buy your lightbulbs (and everything else) somewhere else.

Worst Hardware Store! They say they open at 9am…
I get there at 9:15, to a guy walking out & locking the door… I say «did you just close up»…he says «yeah»…you can come back in 30min, when I’m done eating breakfast…
Then why not say we open when we feel like & you can shop here never…
I would give zero stars if that was an option!

I really love this little place. Is it Home Depot? No. Does it pretend to be? NO! Simple joint with the things you need — plus, the staff is great. Knowledgable and fun to talk to. They have my continued business.

Really disappointed that I bought a can of primer that I did not end up using and was unable to return it. The store said they will not take back any paints or varnishes. I bought it off the shelf with no colors or tints added to it so I am really baffled to why I can’t return it and get my money back.

They are ok for quick shopping, though don’t have a huge selection.
They also do not take returns, only store credit.

Worst hardware store! Horrible customer service, terrible hours, and a bad return policy. This place needs new management.
One of many examples of horrible service: We had a coupon for a free sample of paint (after previously buying many gallons of other paint from them) only to find their mixer was broken, the person behind the counter said it was no problem and to come back in a few days. We came back three times, each time, the mixer was still broken, about a week later when the mixer was finally fixed, they told us our coupon was no longer valid.

THIS. PLACE. SUCKS.
I went to my local neighborhood hardware store not only because of convenience, but to be a supporter of local businesses, however I should have known better from the overpriced 3 way dimmer that I should have not purchased it. But there I was, throwing caution to the wind (big mistake) and bought it.
Maybe it was slight a case of buyer’s remorse or maybe I just smartened up realizing that I didn’t’ need to unnecessarily spend a $ 20 premium. So I had my wife go to return the UNOPENED package that’s was just purchased literally 17 hours earlier.
Oh but low and behold they don’t refund your purchase. They do offer you two choices though:
1. You can keep your purchase
2. Receive store credit.
Are you kidding me? Store credit for something that hadn’t even been in my possession for a full day!!! That is straight up unacceptable! What am I going to do with store credit? Actually I do know what I can use it for… I’ll use it to buy a slap upside the head… because that is what I deserve if I ever find myself in this awful business.
Dumbo Hardware, if only you had teeth, then I could say BITE ME.

They have almost everything you would need to make repairs or paint a wall in your home or office! They also cut keys!
Staff is super nice and they have a large variety of products! They even sell cleaning products!
I will say that the first time I got my keys cut here they did not fit when I got home but the staff happily made me a new one when I went back the next day! No hassle.

Great store (it hasn’t always been the case) and great service. Shelves are stocked to the brim and the staff are always there to help.

This store is so pitiful it is almost comical. The shelves are empty, the staff is lazy and when I went in need of 8 standard sized screws, they only had 3 (and it was like pulling teeth just getting the sales associate to help me find what I was looking for).
Every time I go in no one asks if I need help, when I finally ask for assistance they roll their eyes like I just asked them do me a favor. I would urge you not to shop here but I’m pretty confident you wouldn’t be able to find what you’re looking for anyway…

It’s all about customer satisfaction at DUMBO Hardware.
I’ve shopped here many times now and I’m relatively new to the neighborhood. Service has been great and if they didn’t have exactly what I needed they helped me figure out the right way to get my job done.
It’s a small store which works for small/​medium size project but if you’re building a house you might do better at Home Depot.

I moved to Dumbo. I needed paint so I went to the hardware store across the Street. The guys inside were watching soccer. No paint in stock.
I needed to change a lightbulb. I went to the hardware store, described the bulb I kind of bulb I needed. No bulb.
I needed an air filter. Dropped by. You can guess what happened. Not my size in stock.
Dumbo is not a big place. There are a few large buildings that generally have the same replacement parts. This store should have them, and it doesn’t. Very frustrating!
You who work there, please turn off the tvs and do some thinking about your customers.

Not impressed. They have very limited stock and the salesmen have very limited knowledge of what they are selling. Luckily we never had to return anything as they did not have anything to purchase! I can’t believe there is nothing better nearby.
It’s worth a trip south to go to Tony’s Hardware in Cobble Hill.

Recently went into the store to have keys made for my apartment. I came back to the apartment and only 1 out of the 5 keys worked. I lost track of the receipt during the course of my move but figured that I could go back and get the keys fixed.
Well, I WAS WRONG. I went into the store and showed them the keys and they insisted that I did not bring the keys there. I had a friend with me and even she was able to tell them that I most definitely brought the keys there. They asked me to show a receipt, which, I could not find and quite frankly, didn’t think I would need to save for a $ 5.00 purchase.
I walked out of the store with my bum keys in hand and a vow to myself never to go to DUMBO Hardware again.

Worst. Hardware. Store. Ever.
No inventory. Bad keys. Miserable return policy. No real knowledge of anything beyond lightbulbs.
We need a real hardware store in DUMBO. Please.

The way it should have gone if I was truly a man who felt completely comfortable in a hardware store when he walked in:
Me: Sledgehammer?
DH: In the back.
Me: Humongous saw?
DH: Same place.
Me: Axe?
DH: Yeah dude.
Me: Put it on my tab.
DH: Done
What really happened:
Me: I need these keys made.
DH: (hands them to the other guy who starts making them right away)
Me: Do you have a drain stopper for a tub?
DH: We just ran out.
Me: Other people need this type of thing?
DH: Apparently.
Me: How about a clear shower curtain liner?
DH: (walks and gets it for me after telling his dog, Cujo, to stay behind the counter)
What will probably happen next time:
Me: Do you have one of those things that you like hit nails with?
DH: A hammer?
Me: Yeah, that.
DH: Get out.
For me, I want my local hardware store to know what they have at all times so when I ask, they know if they have it and where. These guys do that right away and are friendly about it. I’m not sure about their overall inventory of hardware, but until they fail me I will continue to go in and ask for what I need.
