Needed a quick bite so I ordered half a chicken, rice and beans, and platanos. The chicken was AMAZING but they messed up on the rice and beans. It was so bland. The platanos Oh.My.God. So good. However, if you are a female, please send a male to get the food or to order. The people in there made me feel extremely uncomfortable. All of the drunk people.

One day a young Peruvian was walking down the Ave and thought he saw a restaurant with Peru in the title. He returned to the Ave on another occasion and picked up a menu. A few days later a phone call was made and Ruben’s officially became part of life. The logo of Ruben’s is a piece of art that could never duplicated, no matter how many Photoshop classes you’ve taken in life. It’s a little bird with a winter hat and cape on that’s ready to take on Brooklyn. Round 1: Shrimp, Fish, Calamari, Scallops, Crabmeat, Mussels, Fried Yucca, Salsa Criolla… F-R-E-S-H! F-R-E-S-H! F-R-E-S-H! Round 2: ½ Chicken with Rice and Beans… Fuck Perdue, Peru Knows Chicken! Round 3: Yuca Frita… Even more Yuca just in case it goes down smooth with that green sauce. Round 4: House Salad… Need some greens! ASKABOUTOURSPECIALTYDISHES –Next time Ruben, next time–

I’ve been coming here for years for the pizza and the spanish food since they’re a neighborhood establishment. Pizza is usually ok(hard to mess up pizza IMHO), but the spanish food is a hit or miss on most days.

El Pollo catered a large gathering at a friend’s apartment recently. By «catered,» I mean«ordered in.» And by «large gathering,» I mean a party of 11 people. We easily ordered over $ 100 worth of food and everything was very well-packed and organized. Too bad all the food sucked. Here’s a rundown of all the stuff we ordered and our thoughts on each: Papa Rellena — under-seasoned Yuca Frita — not bad Mozzarella Sticks — tasted like fried Polly-O string cheese Salads — made with iceberg lettuce(in other words, cheap and unhealthy) Chicken — dry and under-seasoned(an embarrassment for a place called«el pollo») Beans — tasteless and bland Philly Cheese Steak — very dry and needs more cheese Pork Chops — very good and served in large portions Platanos maduros — under-cooked

This is a hole-in-the-wall Peruvian food stop with a random dual personality as an Italian pizza shop. On an early evening, the pizzas sitting in a greasy case looked rather lonesome, while the home style peruvian food was piping hot and aromatic. Great prices on rice and bean platters with choices of roasted chicken and a variety of stews. Don’t expect anything fancy or overly clean; the entrees are served on styrofoam plates with the food spilling off the edges, and you likely have to wipe down the table yourself before sitting down on a vinyl-cracked seat to tuck in.
