European Closet will create more hanging and shelf space in your existing closet. If you don’t have a closet, we can build a new one for you. We do walk in closets, built in shelving, custom wardrobes, reach in closets, built in media centers and wall units, pantry and linen closets.

Established in 1985.

A Brooklyn based, family business, European Closet was formed to provide New Yorkers with a custom high-​end, low cost solution for their storage needs that will comfortably utilize every inch of their space.

Many families are growing rapidly, some moving into new homes while others are making improvements to their current homes. In both cases they are in need of more space for their increasing amount of stuff. European Closet was formed to give these families a product designed to make better use of their space at a cost that is relatively lower than other closet companies.

Our custom closet designers work to create spaces that are every bit functional as they are beautiful.

We are not a franchise like most closet companies, but an independent, family business with our own fully functional manufacturing facility in Brooklyn. Every single closet is custom cut specifically for our clients’ needs, making all of our designs truly custom.

This is my Dad’s company, so he’s had me working with him since I was 15 (1990). I started sweeping floors but worked my way up the ladder — from assisting to later becoming an installer. I learned the way closets work — the proper way they should be built and how the closet is used. I also saw, first-​hand, how our closets actually make a real difference in people’s lives.

Designing custom closets since 2001, the best part of my job is when I come back to client’s home and they tell me just how much their new European Closet has improved their lives.

I work hard to make sure that each closet is going to be exactly what my client needs. Always making sure that the closet is designed to be practical, while trying to keep the cost down.

Henry did the consultation/​design after work which was very convenient. He did a nice job designing the closet and had some good ideas on how to maximize the space. He also accurately set our expectations of what we were going to get.
The install was on time and quick. It only took a few days from the design until the install. The closet was exactly what we needed and to spec, but two minor gripes were it was a bit dirty when they finished (i wiped it down w/​a wet rag and it was fine) and they forgot a shelf which was delivered a few days later.
All and all I’m happy with the price and quality. Would use again.

Good closets, terrible communication and planning. You’ll be sitting around waiting for them and chasing them via phone calls.
I had a closet done with them. They did a great job with the design and installation at a good price. BUT, with regards to planning and timing when they will be at your house they are terrible. They don’t call to confirm and they come at times that were not previously agreed to. For those of us who have to plan our work schedules around their visits this is incredibly inconvenient.
In my case, it has taken 2 months and they still haven’t been able to come in adjust a few of the rods. Appointments that have been confirmed have been missed by their team leaving me to sit at home waiting all day just to be stood up. This has happened twice. Additionally they have then tried to come and told me it would be at 3pm, thus I scheduled my day accordingly. They showed up at 1pm of course I wasn’t there. No one thought to call on any of these circumstances to make me aware.
Be aware when working with them. If you can handles these negatives you’ll have a nice closet but you need to have extreme patience.
And yes they are a small family run business so things can be hard to plan, but a phone call goes a long way with regards to customer service!

We were SUPPOSE to have our closet work done today at 10am. It is now 1:30 and the people from here are a NO SHOW. Nonetheless, they are not answering the phone now and deterring calls to VM. We will hunt him down and contact our lawyer for this deposit. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY the negative reviews on here hold true that it all goes downhill after the initial deposit. Don’t let them sucker you please. I only wish i paid closer attention to the negative ones vs positive ones. Lesson learned!

After my review I received a phone call from European closets asking if they could help fix the problem. Mike the owner called me and apologized sincerely.
I do believe that they take pride in their work and want the customer to be happy. They are a family owned business and I think that my closet might have been an exception to their normal product.
Mike explained that he spoke to his staff and it was just a series of unfortunate events.
Again they cared enough to call and apologize and gave me a refund to have my closet fixed.
I feel that they were fair in response to what happened.

This was my second time using European Closet and Cabinet and I am thrilled with the results. When Mike came to see me and saw that I still had the old closet, he offered to fix it for me, as the closet has a lifetime guarantee — and honestly who gives a lifetime guarantee — no one that I know — except for European Closet.
But, I wanted change and wanted a new design, so I asked him to quote me a price on a design I specifically knew would work for me. He did and his costs were much better than the other quotes I had gotten from other leading closet companies.
The work was outstanding and the closet is perfect. They even included soft-​close doors — which I wasn’t expecting, but now can’t live without. I have recommended them to other people and everyone who has used them is very happy with the completed work.
The fact that it is a smaller family run operation really makes it a personal experience and although their presentation is not as flashy as some of the others on-​line, the quality speaks for itself. I’m a snob about things being done right — and this company made sure that I was satisfied. I can recommend them wholeheartedly — and for the doubters out there — I am not related to them, and am a very tough NY consumer — so this review is as honest as you will ever read.

I had heard about European Closet and Cabinet from a couple of
close associates, and I wound up calling them to inquire about
their services for closet repair for a ladyfriend’s place as a surprise
birthday gift. I spoke with a very mannerly person on the phone and
was specific as to what needed to be done. After making a set
appointment for the next day (when I’d be at her place while she was
out)they arrived, set everything up with the closet efficiently and
thoroughly and even cleaned up a bit after themselves. And they
stressed if that there was any problem, to call the main office right
away. Good, proficient service.

I made an appointment with European Closet and Cabinet in desperate need of a media center for my apartment — I was so tired of keeping my TV on top of the dresser! Their staff was incredibly helpful over the phone, and when I went in for my consultation they had already drafted some sketches based on what he had talked about previously. We’re in the process of finalizing the design now, and I couldn’t be happier with the service I’ve received so far. I can’t wait until the come to my home to complete the installation!

I hired European Closets about a year ago to build a closet in our bedroom. Henry came for the consult and gave us a fair price which included labor and if we paid cash, we would save on paying tax (which we did.) Henry also guaranteed the closet has a lifetime warranty. So, apparently if you need any new shelving or pieces. They would be replaced free of charge.
The closet installers did arrive late but did a pretty quick job. However, when they installed the handles to our closet doors. They did not bring enough for one of the doors. They told me that they would come by the following day to drop it off and never did.
Since then, I have called the office about 10 times and have spoken to Blanca. I have requested the missing handle as well as an extra shelf to move around the closet. Every time I call her back. She claims that she has mailed the materials to me but they mysteriously never arrive. I have even offered to drive to them to pick them up and she insists that the best thing is for her to mail it! Needless to say, I still have unmatched door handles and am missing a shelf. Not to mention that one of the hanger bars is already falling down.
The customer service is horrible with this company! I do not recommend using them unless you like to spend your money on a mediocre job to a company that has below average workers providing your service.

DO NOTTTTTTTTT WORK WITH THEM. DON’T BELIEVE THOSE REVIEWS! They’re clearly written by family and friends.

I have never met such liars before in my LIFE. I set up an appointment almost two weeks ago today. They called late Wednesday evening to cancel my original Thursday evening appointment (unprofessional), telling me the gentleman coming, Mike Balfour had a doctor’s appointment and he’d waited a month just to see this doctor and the office called him back that DAY to tell him they could see him the next day (also unprofessional. I’ve battled cancer and tons of doctors and never have had that happen… but whatever). Blanca, the girl who answers the phone tells me that Mike next works on Sunday but doesn’t work Saturday. Obviously annoyed (since I already rescheduled my week around this), I rescheduled for Sunday and made time again in my schedule. which is really difficult, given my Sundays are jammed. Low and behold, Sunday comes and NO ONE SHOWED UP AGAIN! Waited for several hours, called repeatedly… anddddddddd nothing. No one.
So I leave a voicemail telling them that they should lose my information since there is NO WAY I would ever work with them, after they have blown me off repeatedly, and thank Mike for losing out on a big (6 floor) job.
Then, someone named Henry calls me an HOUR after my appointment and tells me that the guy (which was first Mike then someone else) coming didn’t come Thursday because he forgot he had his grandson’s birthday to go to… Really? I thought it was a doctor’s appointment? He then tells me this Mike character never apparently works on Sundays… Then he tells me that Mike called him, after I left my voicemail and said he COMPLETELY forgot our appointment today. THEN he says, «I’ll have Mike come out now (still Sunday) or I can come on Monday» (but I thought you just said Mike apparently doesn’t work on Sunday?). I literally asked him, «So which lie should I believe? The doctor’s appointment or the birthday? Mike does work Sundays or doesn’t?»
Needless to say, I told him there is no flippin way I would EVER have this lying company come to my house, let alone do any work.
CLEARLY, they had their friends and family come on Unilocal and write «great reviews» for them. There is NO WAY a company with GENUINELY good reviews would demonstrate such callous, negligent and downright DISHONEST behavior.

I had made an appointment for a consult with European Closets after seeing their work in a client’s apartment earlier this month. Mike was able to schedule with me pretty quickly (and was very understanding when I had to reschedule at the last minute) and when he came out the first time he did some rough sketches for me and gave me a very reasonable quote. The next day I called him and told him I wanted to proceed with the job. He came back the next day to take accurate measurements and finalize the design and quote. Since I wanted a non-​standard color (gray), I thought I’d have to wait a little longer before the install could be scheduled, but they were able to schedule my for only 10 days later!
The install was today and I am thrilled with the results. The 2 installers (Eddie and another guy whose name I’ve forgotten) worked quickly and cleanly, were respectful and friendly. They did a reach-​in style clothing closet for hubby so that it could be used much more efficiently with rods/​drawers/​shelves and also created what’s now basically a walk-​in closet under a sleeping loft, which ties into another reach-​in closet that’s already under the loft. The only snag was that 2 of the shelves were the wrong size. Eddie told me that Mike would be in touch tomorrow to schedule a time to bring the correct the shelves over, which was totally fine with me — but about 30 mins after they left, Eddie called me to say he was heading back in my direction anyway and he’d like to bring the shelves if I was still home. When he came back, I asked him to make an adjustment to one of the rods (i decided I wanted it about 2″ higher than it was placed) and he was happy to take care of it for me.
Although I still need to do some serious purging and editing of all my clothes and shoes, I am confident that all the new shelves and drawers and rods are going to make it much easier to keep my stuff organized. Now everything has a «home.» It all looks great and feels sturdy and durable — and it was all done for a fraction of the price I was quoted by Container Store (Elfa), California Closets and a few others I’ve gotten quotes from over the years.

Our new closet is amazing! Our old closet was always a mess and this closet is so organized and efficient — with a place for everything! We absolutely love it! It’s not real big or fancy, just well designed which makes it so much easier to keep our clothes organized and easy to locate.

My experience was very similar to the previous commenter. They were very efficient and helpful in the consultation and the initial scheduling of the installation and then things took a turn for the worse.
They showed up an hour and a half late and didn’t have the right pieces they needed for the job. They left twice over the course of more than 3 hours to get different parts that they needed from the warehouse. In the end, they didn’t even finish the job. When I called the office the next day to find out when they could come back to finish, I was initially told that it would have to be scheduled on a weekday between 10 am and 3 pm. They eventually sent someone to finish, but it was a lot of unnecessary aggravation. The closet looks fine — not high quality, but not terrible.
However, I would not recommend them due to their lack of professionalism and bad customer service.

I had a great experience with Henry and the team at European Closet. Their work was professional, quick and a great value. They converted my cluttered, standard downtown NYC apartment closet into an organizational dream. They also created a utility closet out of an awkward architectural space. During the initial consultation I spoke to Henry about my needs and he designed an optimal layout and we picked out finishings on the spot. The following week the crew came in and installed both units in under 2 hours. I received quotes from national installers which were overcomplicated and overpriced. And I’ve heard horror stories from friends using the home stores’ do-​it-​yourself methods. I’m extremely happy with the work and value from European Closet and will definitely use them again.
