Hertz Rent A Car

By far the best Hertz location in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

The manager at the Hertz on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, NY (not sure if there is more than one manager) was extremely unhelpful. I normally NEVER complain or leave bad reviews about companies… But I was put in such a compromising position where all of a sudden the card I normally use with you guys was not accepted. Instead of helping me find an alternative, I was met with blank faces and «not sure what to tell you» responses. I literally rent with Hertz once or twice a month, so this was extremely disappointing. The manager kept telling me to call Hertz customer service to resolve my issue, switch my reservation around, register another card, etc… all of which he somehow had no power to help me with at the counter. And to top if off that location is in a parking garage so I was unable to even use my own phone to call and resolve this issue… this was also met with blank stares. I am a photographer and rely on the place I rent my cars to be CONSISTENT with what they tell me each time I use them, and to be much more helpful IF an ussue arises… I cant afford to be put in a compromising position where Im left without the ability to get my rental car I reserved… ESPECIALLY when it comes to my job as a professional. I was on my way to photograph someones wedding, and was left in tears at the counter trying to resolve an issue on my own with little to no help from the staff there. FINALLY an associate allowed me to use the phone to call hertz customer service to resolve the issue… as associate… not even the manager. Again, I never ever do this (complain or send a negative review)…but when it comes to my job, my work, and being completely professional. I dont have the option to be put in a position like this ever again with your company.

Avoid if possible !! Customer service sticks ! I just called this location attempting to modify my current reservation and the guy has an attitude. I will take my business elsewhere, nasty, nasty, nasty !

I felt compelled to come on and leave a review, since I was horrified by a few of the reviews on here while I was researching whether or not to use this Hertz location (it’s much more convenient to my apartment than going all the way to the airport).
We’ve rented a car from this location twice now in the past 3 months, and both times were very positive experiences. We never waited more than a few minutes to be helped, we got a clean, new car each time, and each rental experience was very good, including the staff that helped us. I’ll definitely continue to use this location.
I’m guessing it can probably get hectic /​busy here at times — just like at any car rental place, but the rentals /​returns I’ve done so far have all be great. I’m guessing some of the bad reviews are a case of people only bothering to write a review when something goes wrong, so I decided to leave some positive feedback here, for anyone reading the bad reviews and becoming alarmed — it’s a great location, and to me well worth not having to go all the way to JFK for my rental.

Craig was an amazing associate! He helped my family to get our rental. We are heading back to California and driving back. He gave us tips. It wasn’t a long process either. Thanks again hertz staff you all were so helpful!

Good and helpful youngsters working here but clearly they need a tougher manager to kep standards up.
Rental agreement was not printed out and ready to go as it should be for Presidents Circle members
First car offered was very high mileage and damaged inside and out
Car was also dirty inside and out
Fuel tank was not full (⁵⁄₈) but on agreement was marked full and I had to drive back to get it changed
On my insistence car was replaced with better car however,
Second car smelt of Marijuana when it was parked in the sun for a while
Windshield was dirty
Maintenance light kept coming on
Windscreen washer bottle was empty
Gas tank was not full (5/8)…again
Overall, a pretty poor and amateurish rental experience and not one I expect having just paid for a Presidents Circle membership. Lucky for me there’s an Avis just up the street from this branch of Hertz so we have alternatives

Hertz is HORRIBLE. On 10÷01÷14, I rented a Hertz vehicle for my company and used my credit card insurance. I was HIT by a yellow taxi in NYC and cops were called. I returned the car with the incident report stating that the taxi was «At Fault». Hertz then sent me a letter expressing I’m liable for there damaged car. I expressed my credit card has car rental insurance which covers your vehicle. I also expressed that they have the police report and should file the claim with the taxi service to have the vehicle fixed (which the service department handles). A recovery specialist by the name of Bilal Avant sends a letter and when I called to express that the car has insurance, he then told me it was too late and I was liable. He also stated that they don’t do reach out to involved parties unless it was there insurance utilized. How is it too late to have insurance on the credit card I initially rented the car with. Hiring a lawyer and definitely going to take this matter to court.

This is bar far the most efficient and friendly car rental place I have ever used. The customer service here is so incredible and they made the entire process a complete breeze. Location is tops. Thank you!!! Special shout out to the most patient and facilitating customer service rep around Shatara for making the whole process so easy and even enjoyable! She should win an award.

Several issues at that rental office :
— shuttle service was refused for unknown reason when I phoned several days in advance. I asked for 11:00am. The only available slot was 2 pm. I had to leave hotel at noon, so I had to take subway full of luggages.
— My spouse should have been added as second driver for free. See general conditions: AAA — Spouse/​Domestic Partner* of AAA members are not required to have a separate AAA membership in order to receive the free AAO privileges. He refused and wanted to charge me 33 dollars for this service.
— I rent a Nissan Altima (group D). He said the car was not available and that I could have a Nissan Sentra instead. I asked if it was the same category. He said yes. It appears it was a C category which should have been cheaper. He didn’t warned me and didn’t gave any discount. This is what I call theft.

Made a confirmed reservation to pick up a car a few days ago for 12pm for today (Saturday). I showed up at 12:08 and they’re closed. Spoke to a representative and he nonverbally gestured that they’re closed. When I asked for assistance he then explained to me that they were «pretty much out of cars» and gave my reservation away. I also politely asked why would I then be given a confirmed reservation at the their closing time? Does it make sense to schedule to do business at the exact time that you plan on closing? He shrugs and goes about his «business». I told him that I was charged for my reservation and he hands me a number while letting me know that they may keep my deposit. Makes little sense. I would’ve appreciated a little flexibility and some honorable service. Especially since they’re keeping my deposit for a car that was never reserved,

If I could give less than 1 star, I would. This location is terrible — they are so understaffed, it’s the worst customer service experience imaginable. I arrived at 7:30 a.m. right when they opened, hoping I could get in and out quickly and off to work. Riiiight. Nope, there were 6 people ahead of me with ONE person at the counter. One other woman was *frantically* running around trying to move cars.
I should have expected this operation was high drama and something was awry when I dropped off the car at 11 p.m. the night before — the garage attendants where Hertz houses their office, were angry, annoyed and up in arms that I was dropping off a car. Clearly there are politics — they must accept cars for Hertz all the time, but they work for the parking garage, not the car rental. Neither spoke much English but the one man yelled at me clearly «I no work for Hertz!» I told him, I’m not dropping off for Hertz — I’m PAYING to PARK here, OVERNIGHT. And I will return in the morning to return the car to Hertz.” Thanks, Hertz — the last thing I want to deal with as a solo female is confronting angry men in a garage late at night. Way to be safety-​minded.
So the next morning, after FORTY minutes, I finally get served — I was returning a car but wanted to dispute any toll charges. When I rented the car, the man (Calvin) who checked me out didn’t tell me about the EZ Pass reader attached to the windshield below the rear view mirror and how it worked. I didn’t even notice it. But on my road trip, by the 4^th toll, the toll booth operator pointed it out to me and had to tell me how it worked (pay him, Hertz, for doing YOUR job) — and that I’d already paid for the toll at that location with the device. Meaning, the previous tolls, I may or may not have double paid in cash along with the device, which was slid wide open (if the device was slid closed, it wouldn’t have been operational).
Now, when I checked out the car, the Hertz location was totally empty — I was the only person there, with 3 people behind the counter. Yet, the man was very rushed and didn’t give me much info. about the rental (most car rental businesses are pretty thorough about features, etc) — he didn’t tell me about the EZ Pass option and to keep the device slid open, or closed if I opted not to use it. He didn’t even walk me to my car and do a walk-​around check, which is pretty STANDARD for renting a car. He just pointed me in a vague direction and said to look for the red car. The keys weren’t even in the ignition — and, he acted annoyed when I returned to ask and he had to point out they were in the cup holder.
So, after the FORTY MINUTE wait that morning, the man (Craig) behind the counter who looked like he was about to have a heart attack, was so flustered, he could barely keep his attention to me or the man next to me who was only half-​served and abandoned. The panicked man had just stopped helping him and turned his attention to me, I assume hoping my case would be easier. I explained my situation, only to be shut down and told he couldn’t do anything because I have to contact the «PlatePass» company — Hertz apparently GIVES THEM MY CREDIT CARD INFO. (WHAT??) And, I have to now work directly with them on any toll issues. I explained to Craig that Calvin didn’t tell me about the option so it should be on Hertz to at least give me a courtesy adjustment — but Craig was just mean, panicked and in NO WAY helpful. I asked for a receipt but he said the original receipt I had from when I picked up my car *was* my receipt. (I would learn later this was a LIE.)
I should have known when I walked in and saw through the door glass behind sweaty-​panic-​man — handwritten signs in magic marker, taped to the wall in their back office of motivational phrases including one at the top «How Is Your Pulse Rate??» UGH.
Four days later (Friday, ⁵⁄₃₀), I get an email with a new receipt for my rental. And, I’ve been overcharged! More than what he told me when I returned the car! He charged me for gas which is ridiculous since I filled the tank right before I returned it. I called them immediately — a woman took my name, number and order # and said she’d call me right back. That was 3 days ago. AWFUL, AWFUL service.
UPDATE: Over the weekend, I tweeted my Unilocal review to Hertz’s Twitter. They told me to email a copy of my gas receipt with story to some email address which I continued to do. Monday, 6/​2, I went back to the Hertz location to talk to someone in person. The same man Craig was there — who hadn’t given me a receipt. HE had overcharged me — probably to be mean and spiteful. But a woman Elaine was super helpful so far and said she would escalate the issue to her manager to resolve this over the week — but that it would take a few days. Still awaiting resolution — to be continued, UGH.

This location is really small, but their customer service is big, we have rented several cars from this location over the holidays and each time no matter what the situation the staff was always super helpful even when it was crazy busy with the hectic holiday buzz they managed to make our experience stress free!

i can’t believe I’m writing a 1 star review for Hertz, because I rent from them exclusively almost every month and have been very happy with every experience. However, this weekend we rented from this location and it was terrible. To start, the car was dirty when we got it and was obviously not cleaned from the previous renters. The windshield had something splattered all over it from the inside and there was something spilled around the cup holders, as well as crumbs all over the seats. But the car worked and got us to where we were going, so whatever.
When we arrived to return it, they were either understaffed or disorganized but there was a huge pile-​up of cars waiting in one big mess and nobody tending to them. Finally, after sitting outside for 25 mins we were able to pull in and two guys came up to us and we had to ask them to let us get our things out before they sped off inside the garage and started racing the cars.
The woman working in the office was nice enough but the whole experience just left us with a bad impression. Maybe this was a fluke but I am definitely never renting from this location again.

I feel I really need to give a shout out to this location for all of the great work they do here. I rent from here several times a month and the staff at this location is the best out of all the Hertz locations in the city, hands down. Every single time I rent from here, it’s a great experience. Even though they don’t have premium cars, practically every car I do get is fantastic. They have a good number of SUVs, which are my personal favorite, if that’s what you’re looking for. However, you should pick this location based on the staff alone, absolutely.

We rented an SUV for a cross-​country drive recently & I have to single out Cicily as easily the best Hertz representative I’ve ever seen. Not only did she go above and beyond to attend to every detail of our reservation, but she was quite clearly doing everything at that location — including running back and forth to answer the phone & deal with customers, all with a smile and a gracious manner. This woman single-​handedly made our rental experience extremely pleasant — & we’ve rented a lot of vehicles so we know how rare Cicily’s level of service is. She’s also super hot — my wife & I both had a bit of a crush on her by the time we drove away.:)
Hertz: for godssake give this woman a raise! Better yet, put her in charge of customer service company-​wide. She’s obviously the best you’ve got.
