I’m totally unhappy and disappointed with my service tonight. I stopped in and order a grill chicken salad for my daughter and the fried chicken, mac and cheese with collar greens for myself. After waiting 15−20mins I was told there was no more salad. That could have been told to me shortly after I order.(Fine I let that slide). Almost an hr later(50 mins) I received my order i went home to enjoy my meal. Bit into the chicken churchy but over cooked. Half way through my collar greens to my surprise I found the tip of a RUBBERGLOVE sitting there looking at me. I immediately called them and the young lady was very apologictic but the damage was already done.

Not worth your time or $. Rude people work the counter and the food is just OK. BBQ chicken is flavorless chicken with dollar store sauce on it. The specials are never clear and the girls at the counter act like you’re dumb for not knowing. They text while at the counter and ignore customers. The only good thing about this place is their playlist. DONTWASTEYOURTIMEORMONEYHERE!

***HEALTHHAZARD*** This was my 3rd visit to this establishment. The first time, they had no waffles… I don’t even know how that is possible. The second time, they had no whiting fish. I tried them again last night and ordered two meals. Got home and there was hair in my mac & cheese AND in the yams!(See attached photos). So this morning, I called and spoke with a manager and he said to come back and he would reimburse me my food. I had to take a bus all the way back to the restaurant(in the cold and snow). The manager refused to give me my money back because I didn’t bring my receipt(not like he asked me to). I showed him the photos of the food with hair in it I took on my phone. He said«That could be anyone’s food. You have no proof that is my food.» This is the man that cooked the food, yet he couldn’t identify his own food from a photo? He offered to have another meal cooked for me… ASIF I WOULDEVEREATTHEIRFOODAGAIN!!! I asked him to reimburse me my money back or I would leave an honest review of what transpired on Unilocal. He refused. We both made our choice. I hope the owner sees this review and chooses better managers, someone with greater business sense at least.

I loved this place. The collard greens are super good, the Mac and cheese wasn’t bad, sweet potatoes were great, and I think I even tried someone else’s cabbage that was great. The inside of the place doesn’t smell like food though which is weird and it seemed like they had run out of a bunch of things when friends and I tried to order.

I’ve been eating from this chain for years. I was heart broken when they closed the Pitkin and then the Nostrand locations. I have tried bbq and fried chicken, bbq ribs, and whiting. All are very solid and consistently delicious. I can never decide on just two sides, their collard greens and potato salad are my faves but the Mac and cheese and candied yams are great too. Even their kool aid is awesome. Staff is always very efficient and friendly. I normally call ahead of time for pick up.

Been eating here for quite some time. Always order the Two piece of fried chicken with two sides of mac. The mac & cheese is excellent and one of the few soul food places that serves actual baked mac & cheese and not the Kraft in a box.

I just brought home a fried chicken dinner for me and my mom. There’s a good cook in the kitchen, but the cook uses too much sugar and grease. The chicken was expertly cooked and delicious, but the cabbage was sweet! Why does cabbage need to be sweetened? The collard greens were delish, but they tasted like they had a little sugar in them too. Both were too greasy. I must admit that the mac and cheese was great. But, guys, despite gentrification, this is still primarily an African American neighborhood, and you KNOW that many of us are diabetic! We don’t need all that sugar, and nobody needs all the grease.

Severely disappointed today. I’ve been eating here for well over a year now and really tried to keep it up despite the lackluster attitude, being opened /closed whenever they feel like it despite what the hours say, them constantly being out if things — has anyone actually ever successfully ordered chicken and waffles? — and their pile of reasons why they can’t deliver on whatever day you try to order. These are all enough to get then two stars. Even now I want to give them 3 because the food use to be good. But today, everything I order taste like it came straight out of the can. Yams are horrible and the mac and cheese taste like it’s been reheated multiple times. The chicken is dry. You just lost someone who tried to be a loyal customer. Get it together.

Wait, are we talking about when they are actually open and not in renovation mode? Every other month they are renovating… I think I speak for a majority when I say just get behind the counter and cook the dang food man. The food is good not great. Perhaps the focus should be there and not on picking new ceiling tiles. It’s ok to be a hole in the wall as long as you are worth going in to. The service is lackluster and the Kool Aid is a diabetic nightmare. They have a long way to go.

This was my final try. This place isn’t worth spending your money. Save your dollars because first of all there isn’t any decent or great soul food in New York. And this place proved my point and other mom and pop spots proved my point. What I encountered when I got home was horrific. I had spunky chicken. As I bit into it – a fowl odor and taste entered into my mouth. I immediately spat it out and I threw the entire entrée including sides into the trash. My body paid for it the next day. This place isn’t worth going back to complain because customer service is non-existent.

While the food here maybe tasty, the service is horrible. There is an extreme lack of communication between the clerk and the cook. They«sell» you your meal first, and then check to see whether or not they can actually fulfill your order. Shady, shady… They don’t respect your time and will tell you your food will take 10 mins when it’s actually 30mins+. They need to get their act together.

The food was good! We had the fried chicken dinner with an additional side. Considering that it was cooked to order, it was quick. I’ll definitely go again.

Decent soul food. Nice and clean. No parking. The turkey wings are way too fatty, but i guess its soul food. No healthy choice on the menu.

I really am an advocate of supporting local businesses, so it truly pains me to write a less than stellar review of this restaurant. I’ve tried(more than twice) to give them a fair chance, but they continue to disappoint. The customer service is dreadful! DREADFUL! I walked in from the blustery cold to grab a meal before heading home. They were out of what I wanted to order, then they were out of my 2nd choice, too. So when I asked the lady at the counter what WAS available, she told me to hold while she picked up the phone. She then proceeded to take the call, and only turned back to address me to tell me that she would have to take this phone order first, and would be right with me. This was a 10-minute phone call: glares: I then hear her say«oh, I’ll have to get your information again because there was no receipt paper in the machine». She looks over at me and says«It’s gonna be awhile». Wait, this has to be a joke, right? You have a paying customer directly in front of you, who was standing there waaaay before you decided to take this call, and I have to wait even LONGER because of your: ahem: *mishap?(*and that’s a euphemism) Never will I return to this restaurant, nor will I allow friends to support them until management does something about the quality of their staff. *hmph!* My advice: walk the extra few blocks to Manny’s. The food is better, so is the service.

ABSOLUTELYNOT! HECKNO!!! NEVEREVERAGAIN!!! NOTIFITWASTHEONLYSPOTINALLOFBROOKLYN! There will be no finesse in this review — let’s just get to the facts shall we??? I ordered via Grub Hub three times: First time: Fried Whiting Dinner and Fried Chicken Dinner both too salty but not bad overall. The side of potato salad was actually pretty good and I was happy with it. Second Time: Turkey Wing Dinner, Fried Whiting Dinner… Mac n Cheese dry and no flavor. Two orders of Potato Salad was runny and loose waaaaaaaaay too much mayo and paprika. It was a reddish mayo and potato cold soup. The delivery guy forgot my iced teas and when I called him, he said he would need some time but he would bring them to me… yeah ok, he never did. Third and final time: I call first to make sure they had certain items on the menu… they had no fried chicken. LOL. Magic SOUL food had no fried chicken. Okay so we ordered two barbecue chicken dinners both with mac n cheese and yams… the baked chicken which was simply covered in store bought Kraft barbecue sauce was beyond disappointing, the yams were the best thing on the plate and I won’t mention the mac n cheese… what would be the point? Again, I order two side orders of potato salad(thinking maybe the person who made it when I first tried it made it again this time) and two iced teas. GUESSWHAT??? They forgot one of the potato salads and both iced teas. When I called and spoke to the young lady who answered the phone she seemed annoyed, apologized for the mishap and said she would have the delivery guy come back and GUESSWHAT??? He never did and they closed for the evening! I had to call Grub Hub to get my refund because this was ridiculous. The food experience overall was mediocre at best. Basic items were so inconsistent. There is no MAGIC in this soul food. To be honest there is no SOUL in their food. I know what soul food tastes like. It tastes like love, it tastes like someone who loves to cook and feed people. Humph… no love here and no love lost. I TRIED. I’M DONE. YOU’VEBEENWARNED.

I’m basing 2 stars off of Unilocal’s rating«meh, i’ve experienced better». It’s not horrible which 2⁄5 looks like but goodness it needs improvement. We walked in to order take out and the girl was finishing up a convo with just a worker on break or maybe someone who hangs out there? And it wasn’t like 30 seconds of just her trying to cut him off like«hold on lemme take this order». I ordered smothered pork chops, yams and mac. My soul food constant. My friend ordered chicken dinner with yams and mac. The wait is fine since most soul food spots cook to order. We killed time by buying drinks at the corner store nearby. Got home and dug in… the food was SAL-TAY. And I really like salt to the point my doctor said cut back on the salt. I can’t understand why so much salt is added to already natural salty foods like pork. Why make such a salty gravy, why?! My friend’s chicken was saltyyyyyy. Like I can add more seasoning like hot sauce if I need more flavor so I still can’t understand why they would think more salt than less. Even after I scraped off a lot of the smothered gravy which defeats the purpose of the dish it was still horribly salty. Soul food can be remotely healthy or at least a guilt pleasure that’s not suicidal. I feel like a horse with a salt lick afterwards. The mac n yams were okay enough to bring it up to 2 stars. I assume they are just inconsistent and all these other reviewers aren’t insane from salt overdoses.
