Best cherry vareniki and chicken kiev in Brooklyn. The vareniki remind me of the ones my grandmother made. The dough isn’t too thick and it contains actual cherries(not like the ones they sell in the freezer section with empty pieces of dough with a few cherries sprinkled in). They give a heads up — 40 minute wait for the chicken kiev — but it comes out of the kitchen piping hot with butter oozing out, crunchy coating on the outside, and perfectly juicy chicken on the inside. Service wasn’t great, but the food was so exceptional that we will return without hesitation. P. S. parking can be tough to find in the area.

This is my favorite Ukrainian restaurant! even though there are many other restaurants closer to my home, it’s worth the drive! Authentic food for people of all ages and nationalities! My favorite is the classic Ukrainian borscht served with homemade seasoned biscuits! I love their dumplings stuffed with ingredient of your choice called pelmeni. They are traditionally served with sour cream and butter on the side. Their home made fruit punch called kompote should be their national pride beverage! cold refreshing drink naturally made with fresh fruit boiled and chilled. Not like concentrated powdered cool aid or other unhealthy garbage. Grilled shish kebabs are delicious and a rich menu of seafood meat and puff pastry cold and hot gourmet appetizers everything homemade of course by top chefs! After a hearty meal I usually skip the desert but they have an amazing assortment to choose from! Frendly happy environment, very professional staff and wait time is reasonable even if they are full. I really have nothing bad to say about them! Hope this helps! Strongly recommend you bring family friends or make your birthday, anniversary or any affair with them!

Visiting this place is an absolute must to everyone who likes real genuinely home-made food. Delicious and tasteful Ukrainian, Russian Molovian food, and deserts are just out of this world. I have been here with my family and friends for well over 10 times, and every single visit was well worth it.

Only good part was the grilled pork. kind of salty but good overall, the owner /waitress(at least i think she is the owner according to the attitude) was horrible. …we notified her multiple times that we dont speak Russian… and need to use English… we are in America, no? …she kept talking in Russian. in the middle of our order… she had to run to kitchen cuz the bell was ringing for food pick up… later we got warm beer and 50 minutes for Pelmeni. that usually takes 5 min to boil. plus the place was almost empty(no wonder)… and the best part… Mushrooms with potatoes… Baby size portion was 20 bucks… where same dish is sold for 7 or 8 everywhere around… this place needs Staff… and professional manners!!! Not coming back till they improve!

My favorite Russian restaurant. Mushroom julienne and potato vareniki are an absolute must. My boyfriend usually ordered the schnitzel and chicken broth with mini pilmeni, so delicious. The atmosphere is warm and cozy and the alternate decorations based on seasons/holidays so it is super cute. The prices are perfectly reasonable because you are never skimped on the portions and I have always left fully satisfied.

I love this place! I walked into a nice breeze on a hot summer day. The place was empty, probably because it took place during the week day. We had a reservation so the table was already prepared. The staff was nice and friendly. They took their time to explain certain foods that we had questions about. We started of with appetizers. My favorite was the caesar salad with chicken. I then got a taste of the fried potatoes with mushrooms which turned out amazing! I later on got a taste of their pelmeni which were filled with mushrooms I believe. They have a high variety of foreign foods you can choose from. There is also parking that can be found outside the restaurant. Overall this place was great for celebrating my father’s birthday. I will be coming back here :)

Great authentic food, very simple yet very tasty. Among my favorites are red Ukrainian borscht with garlic pampushki on the side, Siberian dumplings and vareniki with sweet cheese. Well prepared and seasoned, the food is a true explosion of flavors in your mouth. Immediately you think of home. Sit back and enjoy! Will definitely be back for more !

We’ve been here several times before I started Unilocaling; hence, only one check in. I like this place a lot! Welcoming personnel, cute décor that is very appropriate for the place, good dishes(not even one was chipped as often encountered in similar places), clean bathroom, but most of all — very delicious food! Anything I’ve tried here has always been good. A perfect solyanka soup, followed by fresh well dressed salads, fried potatoes with little beads of translucent onions, mamaliga(polenta) done in traditional Moldovan style, kypati looking almost too good to eat, pork schnitzel in crispy bread crumbs, moist and flaky fish fried until golden with wonderfully crisp skin… Mmmmm, everything is just so good! Don’t believe me — try for yourself.

Very warm and friendly place in Midwood, Brooklyn for delicious traditional Russian food. I was able to try a few of the different dishes with outer party of 5. The appetizer of pickled herring was good, with about 6 pieces and some nice pickled garnishes. The mushroom with fried potatoes was a table favorite. The typical Russian potato salad was good as well. The borscht soup was excellent, as was served with three warm garlic knots on the side. The main course of lamb shank was excellent as well. It was Cooked in a little individual cistern with vegetables. Very flavorful and the presentation was very nice. I will definitely return to this place again.

We came here a week ago for my father in law’s bday. We were a party of 24. I have mixed feelings about this place. The prices are very decent and there was a good amount of food. Some things were good some just okay. My biggest problem with this place is the service. They just simply don’t have enough staff. The party was for 5pm on Saturday. At 3 o’clock I stopped by to drop off a cake and balloons that I asked them to put on the table. At the time they had 2 big parties. When we arrived at little past 5, the balloons were not on the table and our table was not completely ready. A bit after we arrived they started setting up for another big party they had coming in. So we had to wait until they did that and then had to share our waiters(I think there were 2) with the other party. They also had a few walk in tables that they were serving at the same time. I understand that not accepting as many people as they can sit is not possible because it’s their money, but they definitely need to hire more staff even if just for the weekend when they get busy. Over all it was an okay experience.

It’s been a while since last we ate here, but I do remember that the food was pretty good. We usually went during the lunch hour, so it was usually empty and the service was ok. The food was always fresh and piping hot! Was it the best dining experience, no, but it was very good nonetheless. If you’re in the mood for something different, give them a shot, try the stroganoff and any of the soups… quite good!

We went for Mother’s Day which is insane everywhere, and honestly, it’s impossible to enjoy even the most sophisticated cuisine when everyone is on top of each other, so 3 stars for the food which I thought was solid Russian/Ukrainian, and 1 star for the service-even though they were running around like chickens without heads, and the owner himself had to pitch in to set up and clear off the tables, they were friendly, they congratulated every party with Mother’s day, they apologized multiple times for the craziness, etc. They did forget my order of pelmeni, but the quality of food was pretty good. I would like to visit his place off-holiday and possibly, up the rating to 5 stars.

Great place for authentic Russian food with that homemade taste just like your grandma made it. Everything we ordered was delicious and made to perfrction. Borsch, Pelmeni, Vareniki w/potato mushroom and onion, shish kibabs as well as desert. MUST try Napoleon for desert, out of this world! This spot is solid for dinner gathering as well as lunch!

Whenever I drove by this place in the past I thought it was a shop of some kind – probably because of the name, and the pawn shop next door. This week I had a less than festive occasion to try this place out. There’s little to complain about in the kitchen – decent appetizers(they got the Odessa-style eggplant salad right). The dumplings and mushroom julienne are all pretty dependable, as are the kebabs, potatoes, and meat pies. The sour cherry dumplings were also pretty good as a dessert. Service was fine during the meal. It took a while to set up, though. It looked like one man was doing the job of several, though later another waiter emerged. This was daytime and one would hope they up the staffing during night hours. SB is a worthy entry in the category of mid-range, simple, affordable Russian cuisine.

I pre-face this by saying that the quality of the food here is good. It tastes good, it smells good, but the food is not really the problem. It’s the service. My experience was so bad that I’ve had to come back and update my original review. My grandmother selected this place to celebrate her birthday so my family and a few extended relatives(about 20 or so people) came here on a thursday afternoon a little after 3pm. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the kind of spread that your stereotypical Russian family orders when they go out. It’s pretty damn big, The first issue that draws my ire was that the establishment let my grandmother order way to many appetizers for the amount of people we had and for the table space we were using. It was so bad that they had to stack dishes on one another and we started to combine the plates together after one was done to make some room. I get that the place needs to make money but at some point you need to make clear to your customer how many people your food is going to feed and how much room it takes. To add insult to injury the a lot of the varied cold meat orders such as tongue or sausage or lox actually had some pretty small servings on huge plates that took up a lot of space. 3 slices of lox and 5 really thin slices of tongue? It’s just insane and rude. You’re taking advantage of a customer that’s bringing you 20 peoples worth of business. That was just the first thing that gave me a bad impression, the next was the service. They only had 1 waiter, and 1 bus boy waiting on the entire restaurant. This place had enough room to seat maybe another 60 – 80 people, and they had one waiter. It took forever for our main dishes to come out. At one point the waiter avoided me for nearly 30 minutes when I was trying to get his attention to ask for something. It’s bad enough already that they are understaffed, but when the one primary waiter that’s on duty avoids you it’s really bad. It wasn’t just that he was busy with other customers. He saw me trying to wave him down and get his attention numerous times, he even made eye contact. If the slow and rude service wasn’t bad enough they completely forgot someones order. While the entire family is eating the one poor guy out is picking through the ton of cold meat and salad remains. Which brings me back to another point of bad service, clearing the table. They almost never did it. It’s usually customary to clear a table between the different courses of a meal unless the diners specifically say no. We had dishes of pork and fat and whatever else clogging up the table to where some spots had a jenga game of dishes being played and my sister had to get up and start taking some of them to the front desk. It doesn’t end there either. Thursday was particularly chilly and they didn’t have the heat on inside. Their doors don’t have one of those«heat barriers» that some places use to keep it warm inside so every time the door opened you’d get a chill that shot down your spine. I asked them somewhere between 5 and 8 times to raise the heat. I think they even shut it off after turning it on once or twice. It was cold enough that customers were sitting in jackets and sweaters and covering up their semi fancy semi formal dinner wear. I don’t get how a business can justify this kind of service. I don’t get how customers look past it and return again. Despite the quality of the food I cannot in good conscience recommend this place to anyone. They just don’t deserve your business.

I’ve been to many Russian restaurants(both low and high-end) and I am a huge huge fan of this place. It’s authentic food that doesn’t feel mass produced. Every time I eat here, I feel like there is an old grandma in the back that I should go hug. It’s the ultimate comfort food for me and I have enjoyed pretty much every item off their menu. Tip: you can buy their pelmeni and vareniki frozen and enjoy at home.

The potato vareniki, home-style potatoes(served on a skillet), chicken pelmeni, and a glass of compote is my go-to order at this place! All of the entrees are perfect for sharing and I would actually suggest ordering several dishes for a family-size/style dinner that is sure to fill you up(and make you reminisce about grandma’s homecookin’, or at least give you an idea of what it would’ve been like growing up in a Russian/Ukrainian household!) I love introducing my non-Ruski friends to Russian/Ukrainian cousine, and this will definitely be the first place I bring them to. Great service, convenient location, feasible prices… Yup, I’m a happy camper :)
