Sophie’s Bistro & Lounge

Oh Sophie, how I really really wanted to give you five stars.
But once again, I walked away so disappointed in what could otherwise be a helluva good restaurant.
The space is fabulous, with great seating arrangements and an outside garden (hard to find in Brooklyn). The décor is fresh and inviting and the restaurant is impeccably clean.
But then came the service and food and everything went downhill from there. The guy at the register did not speak a clear English so it was difficult to communicate. I should add we were the only people in the restaurant at dinner time. We finally finished putting in our order — took a good 5 minutes or more — and went to take a seat.
We ordered two chicken noodle soups, shawarma in a laffa, shawarma platter and drinks.
This guy came up from the downstairs kitchen with our soups. At first glance it looked like vegetable soup so we hesitated but he assured us it was chicken and the noodles and chicken were at the bottom of the bowl. The soup was very tasty but very overwhelmed with what tasted like MSG and other artificial ingredients.
My husband noticed that they didn’t actually have a shawarma on a spit. They basically cut up chicken and put it on the grill and named it shawarma. That’s not what shwarma is. My platter came soaked in oil, it was absolutely awful. His sandwich was basically a grilled chicken sandwich.
Why they did this I have no clue. They’ve barely been open a month. It’s truly sad but I have officially written them off. No thank you.

I went here for dinner last night, we were a party of 4. we were promptly seated and our orders were taken quickly. after 7 minutes one of the four dinner orders arrived. we waited another 10 minutes until the second order arrived. the first two dinners received had already been consumed and we still had not received the remaining 2 dinners. we asked various waitresses about the wait time and we finally received the third order. this was also consumed before the fourth order arrived. In addition they served hot drinks that were also consumed before most of the food arrived. There were no apologies from anyone and the owners wife was present. finally the last dish arrived after everyone else has finished their meal. I am not complaining about the food, it was good, the service was beyond awful which left a bad taste and no tip was left due to the poor service. lastly, the owner should implement a serious customer service training program as well as set image guidelines for the entire staff.

Love every thing about the restaurant. It’s clean, friendly staff, food is great. The spinach salad is my favouite and I add on a piece of grilled salmon. The best desert is the belgium waffle. Would recommend to any one to try this fantastic restaurant.

We went to this place with my friends and all of us love it so much, food was very tasty and staff was very helpful and polite!!! we will go again!

I’ve been here twice. Both times the food and service left a lot to be desired. Will not be returning anytime soon.

When I called to complain about a piece of salmon that was majority fat and tasteless (I have ordered this dish before), The owner could not have been more rude after I complained politely and even complementing our previous orders, she proceeded to tell me that I knew nothing about salmon and that if I do not like fatty fish I should eat salmon anymore. Needless to say not because of the fish but because of Sophie’s demeanor my family and I will no longer be eating here. I hope that they change their attitude it would make a great difference.

I must say the place is pretty decent, when we walked in we were told we can not sit at the back due it to being for VIP only which I probably wasn’t. The waitresses hardly spoke or understood the language of English.
When I ordered my pan seared salmon with a mushroom cream sauce. The salmon was not pan seared, so I approached the waitress and told her my concern. She then brought over to the table 3 other waitresses but none of them understood what I was saying AND THEN the owner of the restaurant comes over and starts explaining to me that the definition of pan seared in her restaurant is not the same as in other places. She makes it different. Well, after realizing we ain’t gonna get anywhere with her audacity we left. PEOPLE OUT THERE SOPHIE AND HER RESTAURANT ARE MESSED UP

Just ate there today! Amazing food. Warm, friendly atmosphere. The owner and family are delightful! Pizzas, pastas, panini, and homemade lemonade were all beyond compare. We vist Brooklyn at least once s month and will most surely return. My highest recommendation for this restaurant!

First time here and going to be a regular love this place so relaxing… cool and romantic… u get a friendly welcome from the owners and write away seated … the waiters use am ipad to take ur order a new pos system which I think is pretty cool… good food and food people

I was surprised that I had a café so amazing right by me. Usually on weekends I like to go to manhattan to experience such a great lunch. I ordered sushi and my friend ordered a pasta dish. The sushi was so yummy (try the peanut avocado roll!), and the penne a ala vodka according to my friend was mouth watering! I will definitely be going back to see what else I can order.

Real good mozzarella sticks.. shockingly good. Best kosher sticks in a long time… the Mexican pannini was good. Very clean place. Service quick. … Open late!

Against better judgment, we came here to try it out for ourselves.
The service wasn’t bad at all during our experience. The food we ordered was mediocre. I had the mexican Nachos, which was pretty good, but the «spicy» tilapia was anything but.
My wife ordered a tuna steak medium and it was served well done. She did ask for mashed potatoes instead of greens, as she cant have greens these days, and they accommodated without hesitation. They did graciously take the tuna steak and bring a new one, which was better, but not quite medium. I think at that point, the appeal was just lost and she could not finish it.
They do get stars for their service and effort and some of the food was good.

I was a bit skeptical about this place because of the low Unilocal rating, but i decided to give it a shot anyway. Man was this place wonderful! I had a Yanini Panini with fries. I don’t even remember what was in it; all I can say is that it must have made out of magical and delicious Kosher unicorns.(except it had no meat. the place is vegetarian).
On serious note, the food is delicious, the décor is beautiful, and the service was on point.

My kids brought me here for mother’s day and it was great they have this really nice outdoor space and the food was ok, the waitress really nice, i thought i found my next favorite place to eat and chill. a week later i had to meet with a business associate and was exited to bring her here, we sat down and ordered drinks, the waitress goes to give our order in and comes right back asking if we were ordering food as well, since it was after dinnertime we both said no and you’re not going to believe this, the owners kicked us out!!! the place was empty (now i know why) and they kicked us out because we werent ordering food, only coffee and soft drinks. can u believe it? we were both horrified! i will never step foot in there again. the owners are greedy and money hungry!!! i was disgusted!!!

I happened upon Sophie’s, after the restaurant I intended to go to (Lotus Thai Lounge) on the same block was closed. I decided to give Sophie’s a try because of the clean and well designed Interior, the diverse vegetarian menu and the fact that it had the word Bistro in the name which somehow subconsciously signaled to me that the food must be at least decent. I walked in with my girlfriend for a late Tuesday dinner. We immediately ordered the Mint Tea, The Mushroom Quesadilla, The French Onion Soup, The Veggie Corn Schnitzel (I didn’t know what this one was but the name sounded intriguing). The waitress, who spoke with a loud thick Russian sounding accent, was amusing, mainly because I couldn’t tell if she was being funny or being actually mean.
I’m halfway into my Quesadilla when I realize, This is no Quesadilla! This is simply a store bought tortilla wrap folded in half with shredded cheese and mushrooms in the center microwaved and cut in half. And the mint tea I was drinking was Lipton with room temperature water and some old mint leaves thrown in. I feel an immediate sense of disbelief! I look around and think about the clean interior, and the use of the word Bistro in the name. I’ve been duped! How could I have made such a mistake! I desperately look at the cheese-​less french onion soup. I tried the Veggie Corn Schnitzel which I learned was nothing but a pre-​frozen heavily breaded corn and mush patty deep fried in Grease.
The service was atrocious. Our waitress actually had a table right next to us, and was sitting there between orders chatting and laughing it up with her girlfriends. She had a look on her face when she was speaking to us that said only one thing. «I hate you with every bone in my body».
I wasn’t angry, I wasn’t disappointed, I was simply flabbergasted at how terrible this place was. I was surprised to find within myself and urge to not tip for the first time in my life. This is the type of junk that should be served to a waiting line of people looking to spend no more than $ 5. Certainly not in a well designed, clean, «Bistro». Sophie’s was beyond bad. This realization sunk in even more as I left the place and realized how terrible this place was. So much so, that I felt the urge to write my first review on Unilocal
