Clean, organized and good customer service. What else you can expect from a grocery store ? They make pretty good pastry and also good selection of ethnic food.

I have been wanting to write a review of this place for a long time but finally getting the opportunity to do so. This is basically a Turkish grocery store and butcher located on Ocean Ave in Brooklyn. It also has a dessert counter, mini olive bar and offers few hot items for a quick bite(gyro, rolls stuffed with meat/cheese/spinach). The place is clean and well stocked of items. I have been making the commute from Long Island to this place(at least) for the last 8 years. The reason? the butcher. The quality of the meat sold here is like none other. This is a zabiha halal butcher. Although one may be able to find similar or even better quality beef and chicken elsewhere, this place really shines for their lamb. A call placed 1 – 2 days in advance can secure you a baby lamb which they will happily cut up to your specifications. No other butcher that I have tried carries such good lamb(mostly Long Island; BUT I have not tried places in Astoria, Queens which also has many butchers that specialize in lamb). It’s so good that many of the restaurants(especially the Turkish) in the area get their meat supplied from here.

What am I doing in a meat & deli place? I was dragged in reluctantly by a friend claiming that the baklavas and other Turkish delights were out of this world. Sheepishly, I peered into the glass cases filled with sweets and watched as he selected baklavas, pistachio rolls, sweet cake and all other stuff. I had to ask, is any of it vegan? The lady behind the counter said eggs and butter mostly. I watched as the honey dripped from the bottom of the pastries, and I succumbed to my primal instincts. «May I have 4 pieces of the pistachio rolls please?» It had the least of anything… and when I bit into my forbidden dessert, I felt a rush a pleasure up and down my spine… So, I realized that I couldn’t resist Turkish desserts here. I’ve been back so many times, I’ve lost count. Did I mention the rolls are light, sweet, crispy and perfect? You can buy a pound and eat it all in one sitting, ok, maybe 2 sittings!

I kid you not when I say that this is my third legitimate attempt(in the past hour) to write a detailed review of the deliciousness that is Sultan. I really want to write this review. I do! This food was *incredible*!! However, I am in a heroin-esque state(I’ve never done drugs, mind you — but from watching such great films as Trainspotting, I can only imagine that the euphoria I currently feel, equates with a large quantity of illegal substances that make you feel orgasmic — while simultaneously ruining your life). The good thing, is that all the hummus, tabouli, Turkish bread, and cacik in the world, will do nothing more than make me humungously fat(and sweet mother of God is it worth it!)… but, I digress. Am I making sense? Because, if not, it makes perfect sense why… This food is AMAZING! Truly, AMAZING! I’ve been going here for over a decade, and their quality hasn’t decreased in the slightest. I want to describe each food item they offer in fantastic detail, but the honest truth is that it’s so damn good, that I’m sitting here on my futon, moaning in ecstasy with each bite, and my brain is so numbed with oxytocin from sheer delight, that I can’t type up the words that are adequate and deserving, to review Sultan’s foods. And that just isn’t right. I suppose I could wait a few hours, or til the morning, but I want this to be genuine, even if I’m in such a food coma that I see nothing but angels and little blue birds flying around my head. I ordered tabouli, hummus, cacik, Turkish bread, a chicken gyro, and a lamb gyro. I am a HUGE eater(9 hot dogs in 1 sitting), and I can tell you right now, that between my boyfriend and I, there was enough food left over to last me for lunch tomorrow. The Turkish bread — Where do I begin? It’s crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, topped with sesame goodness, and flavored to absolute perfection. I promise you that you won’t find Turkish bread better than this, and if you do, let me know. Hummus — I’m pretty positive(and again, correct me if you’ve been here and I’m wrong) — that this is the best hummus I’ve ever had. And I’ve had Sahadi’s(adore them, but this is definitely better). Again, no words. Just. Delicious. Cacik — perfectly seasoned, and incredibly flavorful. From the consistency it looks watered down, but the second you try a spoonful, you realize it isn’t. It’s perfect. Perfect for drizzling on your tabouli or hummus or gyro, or dipping your Turkish bread into. But I prefer to just drink it like soup. That’s right. It’s THAT good. I swear to the gods of Istanbul. The gyros are perfect. SO much meat — whether you order lamb, or chicken. Moist, not dry. Perfectly balanced with onions, tomato, and lettuce. Honestly, I don’t know what more to say. Just try them. They’ve left me speechless. The tabouli is lemony and delicious. Could it use slightly more bulgar wheat and a little less parsley? Sure. But even upon thinking that, I couldn’t get over the fact of how absolutely delicious it was, even with lacking wheat. I mean, most middle eastern fast food spots use *far* too much parsley, and almost no wheat, but this place truly does it right. And I mean that. I just had a meal where I sat back on my futon and moaned in delight for a solid half hour. I was absolutely craving solid Turkish food, and I know of so many places around my neighborhood that don’t exactly pride themselves on doing it right. This place absolutely should. I will be ordering take-out from here tomorrow, and Friday as well. I can’t imagine NOT craving this. If I was asked how to improve it, I honestly wouldn’t even know what to say. Do I recommend this place? You bet your life. But a part of me wants to *not* recommend this place, and keep it my own little secret. Thankfully, nobody ventures to Sheepshead Bay for good Turkish/Halal, so hopefully I can keep this place to myself. But seriously, I am beyond words. I’m gonna have to check this review in the morning just to make sure it’s in English and makes sense. Cuz right now, I wouldn’t be so sure. Go here. Enjoy their food. Support these guys. I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to write a review of them. Best halal in Southern Brooklyn, hands down. Hands so far down, I’m standing on them, and losing feeling in my pinkies. I LOVEYOUSULTAN! And I will see you tomorrow!

Clean, clean, and more clean is the first impression when you walk in the door. No smell of old blood at the meat counter. Great cuts of meat, and service with a smile.

We were regulars for the chicken gyro as well as the french fries. Since we moved to Bay Ridge, oh how we miss it. That Turkish Bread… the humus, the everything! The food is made fresh daily. There was a time when they opened a branch here on 3rd, but it was a victim of its own success. Please come back to Bay Ridge! We will volunteer behind the counter to make it work!

My new favorite spot for authentic gyro. Red lentil soup, yum.
