Suny Downstate Medical Center

This is to document my experience going to Dr. Persaud at SUNY downstate medical center because I had awful shoulder pain. Shortly after I got in, a receptionist asked me, in front of everyone in the waiting room, to describe the pain I was feeling. Then after a short while, I was sent to get x-​rays. Warning bells should have gone off. I was sent to get x-​rays in another part of the building BEFORE seeing the doctor I had come to see. The people in the X-​ray area gave me the wrong robe to use, so metal was detected during the x-​rays, requiring me to take them again – so I was subjected to unnecessary radiation. About 1 ½ hours after first setting foot into the Center, I finally saw the doctor. She spoke a mile a minute as if she had no time or interest in me. I asked her to slow down and she laughed saying she often gets that comment. I really don’t think it’s a laughing matter if your own patients can’t understand you or feel that you could care less about them. She said that the xrays were uninformative… since it appears it was a muscle issue. Thus, it is possible that I could have avoided a lot of radiation and inconvenience if the doctor had simply seen me first. Little did i know that this place has a nice little scam going… Weeks after my visit I received a bill from the imaging company which my insurance, AETNA, a truly miserable company, would not cover. The imaging company is separate from the doctor it seems. Weeks after that, I received a bill for $ 111, because the x-​rays were read by a technician who charged separately… This place is a SCAM. AVOID IT IF YOU CAN.

After waking up covered in vomit and no memory of anything that had happened after drinking my second drink, I came to the conclusion that someone may have drugged my drink the night prior. I contacted the police and they told me to get drug tested immediately because «date rape» drugs leave the body quickly. Kings County Hospital said they don’t do drug tests, so I went across the street to SUNY Downstate Medical Center and went to the ER.
I understandably was pretty shaken up and didn’t feel well, and I hoped the doctors and nurses would help comfort me and explain what had happened. Instead, I was met with condescension, ignorance, and insensitivity. On the preliminary form I had written that I thought I had been drugged by a «date rape drug» and wanted to get a drug test. After waiting several hours, I was finally called back to explain what had happened to two nurses. They started their questioning by asking multiple times if I had been raped. When I tried to explain that I was almost positive I hadn’t because my friends had kept me with them all night, one nurse chastised me for calling these drugs «date rape drugs» because it made me sound like I had been raped. They accused me of providing them with inaccurate information, and they framed their criticism as if I had purposefully misled them. When I explained that that was the colloquial term and apologized for the miscommunication, they claimed they had never heard it before and could not understand why I referred to the drugs this way. They then lectured me about leaving my drink out into the open and criticized me for putting myself into a dangerous situation. This made what was already a terrifying situation so much worse. At this point, I received a container to take a urine test.
Finally, about five hours after I had arrived at the hospital, I was I was called back to see the doctor. My urinalysis was negative. I know myself and know what happened the night before was not okay and not normal. I question the hospital’s testing procedures (the doctor even explained that the test might not cover what was in my system) and I question the length of time I had to wait in the waiting room, especially since the situation was so time-​sensitive. Even more so, I question the training of their staff to deal with sensitive issues. Someone who has been hurt or violated by another person should receive help, care, and kindness, not judgment.

Good morning my citizens. How are you doing today. I hope today reaches you all happy, healthy and planning for the future. I hope you can see my visions of the future and my plans for you. I hope can for now you can accept me as your new princess and in time come to view me a your benefactor, your employer, your best friend, your protector and eventually elect me as your empress.
Three cheers for the new world order. Three cheers to the rise of the «Blue Dragon Empire». You have suffered for long enough. It’s time to hand the reins of power over to someone who only wants to serve and protect. Someone who will dedicate their entire life to see you happy.

After my horrors with New York Methodist and Brookdale hospitals I decide that I was being petty. That it was time to let bygones be bygones and go home. So I did. I went home to the very first RN JOB I’ve ever had. A teaching and research nurse at SUNY DOWNSTATE HOSPITAL. Ah, going home never felt so good!!!
Here I am loved, here I am respected, here I am the Princess!!!
Total ER TIME LESS THAN 4 hours. ER turnover rate: good enough. Quality of service: EXCELLENT.
I would like to say a grateful thank you to my doctor of yesterday. Dr Fan you are freaking awesome. Anything you need you got it girl!
I am still in some pain but your care was superb.
To all my friends who ditched this hospital, to those that stayed and to those of your now starting I salute. In the time I’ve been gone SUNY DOWNSTATE as remained a place that is well oiled, caring and provides excellent customer care. I am proud to tell the world that you trained me. And that you are continuing to care for my people.
CONGRATULATIONS on bringing your Princess to tears and achieving my first 5 star rating keep up the good work. Show the world what service in health care should be!

The best Medical Center ever. I love the staff. Nicest people ever. Very professional staff. They put ear tubes to my Niece. Doctor Silverman Is a perfect doctor and very professional. And The RN was very nice lady, very caring. Actually all the staff and everything about this hospital is perfect. I highly recommend this medical Center. Thank you so much.

worst hospital ever! staffs are unprofessional and uncooperative! espically suit C staffs!

If I had to choice a hospital or med facility it wouldn’t have been here. My doctor does surgery here that’s all. It’s nearby my home though. Blk folk deserve to give better care! Nurses let beeping IV monitors beep for 45 mins or even 10 mins at 4am! I was on 6^th fl Rm 626 Jan 4 – 6, 2011. Nursing staff and teams of doctors need lessons from social media. Listen! Ask if anything about your visit has not served you well and let patients know you want the truth. And b4 leaving a patient on any contact, ask one question: «Anything else?». Ms. Collins, one the nurses, is great! Ms. Stanislaus is good too. It’s ironic that the bulletin board outside my door identifies the challenges: poor communication skills of staff, poor promptness response to call bell, friendliness, etc. «Knowing» doesn’t make a difference. Listening, real engagement is missing.

Well what can I say about this hospital? It seems to be a neighborhood staple with a fairly proud history. Many future doctors serve their residency here so if you’re coming to be treated, you will be under the care of a student doctor who works under a senior attending doctor. If you’re coming to the ER, plan to wait for a while because they are severely understaffed due to financial problems that has caused many of their employees to be laid off. It looks fairly unkept but I’m sure it’s due to their financial struggles, I actually saw two rats chasing each other at the emergency room entrance, but to be fair, it is located in the hood.
