I came here with a groupon with the excitement of a new do that will make me feel great. And great I feel! Alfred, my stylist was wonderful. He was very informative and explained every thing he was doing. He stayed by my side to make sure the level of toning was exactly what I needed. He also asked questions about me so that he knows how much coloring my hair needs to stay with a professional, yet summery look. It’s been a month now and I love my hair more and more everyday. I get so many compliments asking me where I did my hair and had it cut. Love it and will be back! Hopefully with some promotions though

I purchased the Groupon as an excuse to try out a different salon since the one I had been going to just wasn’t working for me anymore. I am really glad I chose The Heights Salon!
Alfred did an absolutely amazing job at turning overgrown foil highlights and a not so good cut into wonderful, slightly longer than chin length bob with a full set of balayage highlights. He spent three hours dry cutting, coloring, touching up the cut, then showing me how to blow dry and style my fine, stick straight hair. I’m really excited to implement the tips he showed me, since they’re pretty easy and low maintenance.
I will definitely be coming back to see Alfred in the future.

The heights salon is a gem in the Brooklyn Heights neighbourhood! I’ve walked by this place several times and thought they might be pretty plain and traditional– but upon some research found that they do a ton of trendy stuff! Alfred did Balyage on me and it turned out incredible! I’ll be back!

To say the very least, I absolutely love the way my hair came out and I will be coming back.
I came to the heights salon on a whim two weeks ago. I wanted, well more like needed to get a haircut and color. My balayage had grown out and was starting to look more like a brassy ombré. Alfred did my hair. He was very knowledgable, informative and answered all my questions. He explained everything that he was going to be doing and why, while taking into account what I wanted. Which honestly I don’t think I’ve ever experienced. Usually I go in show a picture and the person doing my hair will just (attempt to) do it. Just to be very clear– I have only dyed my hair twice prior to coming here.
Before coming here, I knew my ends were bad but I had not noticed how bad my overall hair was, not until Alfred started asking me if I had been stressed… I had a lot of breakage, my hair was dry and due to some stress I had some hair loss. He gave me great recommendations which I’m currently putting into practice and will hopefully see a difference in a few months.
I came in for a haircut, balayage and a blowout. I walked out of the salon feeling like a whole new person, lol. My hair looks great, which was evidenced by the looks and compliments my mom, sister and boyfriend gave me. :) I cannot give this place enough praise or say how thankful I am to Alfred for giving my dry, damaged and dull hair LIFE. You can tell Alfred loves what he does. He truly is an artist.
Today I am back here at the heights salon, with my sister. She is getting a balayage (her first), done by Alfred.

I was introduced to this salon via Unilocal,so I thought I’d report back here. I had a wonderful last-​minute haircut experience with Alfred at the end of October. He fit me in at the end of the day for a basic haircut. He was so kind and precise and he explained his technique so I would understand why he was cutting a particular way. I have curly hair that I sometimes wear straight and it’s always tricky for me to find a stylist that knows how to balance this. Alfred intuitively knew exactly how to make my hair look great and he worked quickly and efficiently. I’ve spent four years salon-​hopping in NYC, but this is the best fit I’ve found so far.

I had a great experience with Michael, who gave me a layered haircut. I appreciated his professionalism and style as well as the salon’s friendliness and great location. I’ve gotten many compliments since!

Hi! I feel fabulously relaxed + calm, each + every hair appointment I have been at the Salon…, been here for few years now, started with just a haircut. Now I get hair products here. Last 2x, I got colors done, and I love it!!! I receive their honest feedbacks — i.e., what I want may not work well with me. Staff always have been professional, polite, kind, generous, while fun and entertaining, + social to spend my salon time with… Other times, new cut ideas get tried, and I love the mini-​adventures. ~K

Just called to make an appt. for ½ head of highlights ($ 180), they then asked if I would like to add on an additional blow dry. I asked what they meant as I have never gotten my highlights done and not had the blow dry included. They said I could leave with it wet or just airdry. How would I know how the highlights looked if my hair is still wet when I left? Also why am I spending $ 180 to not get it blown dry after. Guess I wont be back…

worst salon. worst place. the staff is incredibly RUDE. RUDE RUDE RUDE

The only person worth going to here is Mikel. He is great, kind, and does a phenomenal job.
Unfortunately, the rest of the staff are nowhere near as good. I called to come in to have a slight alteration made to my haircut. The woman on the phone didn’t seem to understand what I was asking for after repeating myself several times, and told me I couldn’t come in because there was no one there who could color my hair that day. I had not asked for anything related to coloring.
After clearing that up, I came in to see the person who was free that day. I explained to him the small change I wanted (one part of my hair was left very long while the rest had been cut a different length. I have bangs and there was a layer underneath that was curling up through them and just needed to be clipped off). He proceeded to make a number of unrelated changes, as if he were giving me a normal haircut, and at the end when I repeated what direction my hair normally goes in, he seemed surprised and explained he thought I had said the opposite of what I’d originally said.
I had to leave at the point as I was already running late. I asked how much I owed and the woman wanted to charge me $ 45. I explained again that I had been in several days before and just needed something fixed, and we settled on $ 15, which seems fair.
The next day I noticed my hair looks no different, and I am now down another fifteen dollars. My hair still has that curl.
I’m normally very happy with this place when I’m able to see mikel. I’m really disappointed how things have gone this time though.

Had a great first time experience with Neil. I had very long healthy hair. Second experience not so. I wound up with tricolor hair. He seriously over processed it. It’s so dried out; it’s impossible to comb or style. Sadly I’ll be loosing quite a lot of it during my next cut at another salon.
I would also add there’s plenty of unwarranted attitude going on amongst the staff.

I left the salon in tears — I’m not even joking. I’ve been going to Heights Salon for awhile now — always seeing Neil — who was amazing (where are you Neil?). This time when I called they said Neil left but they could put me with Rafael for highlights and color. Going with a new person is scary– but I agreed, I had my picture which wasn’t that difficult — a pretty normal collar bone length LONG bob.
Color went well and then the cut began. I showed him the picture (a piecey lob) again and said, «just like this,» he said, «okay, okay. Everyone is getting their hair cut like this now.» So I felt reassured. I felt the scissors a little high on the back of the neck and when I asked he said, Oh I have to cut it straight… okay. At some point he asked me, «Shorter?» I just responded, «like the picture» but really thought he meant the sides until he started cutting MORE off the back. I’m not even joking I turned around and said, «OMG, what are you doing!» and he said he had to cut it shorter in the back to get the right angle in the front. IT ended up being two inches shorter than the picture! My friend said it looks like a bad 80’s bob, which may be the last time Rafael took a hair styling class.
At that point it was beyond repair and I started to tear up. He said that once he finished it I would love it. The assistant could tell that I was upset and brought me a box of tissues as I saw him work away at the botch job. At one point he blamed the weight of my hair (!!) for it not looking like the picture. THIS IS THE SAME FREAKING CUT I GOT LAST YEAR!
In the end I cried, he flipped his arms and went to the owner who came over and said, «It is a little shorter, but it wouldn’t take that long to grow out. «A-​HOLES I have two weddings in the next two months I’m going to cry every time I look in the mirror at this soccer mom bob. There is nothing about this haircut that even resembles the picture.
I just had to get out of there before I freaked out and started full on bawling. Owner (or manager?) didn’t charge me for the botch, which is good since I have to now buy Hairfinity to grow this ass ugly hair cut out. I keep looking in the mirror hoping that it isn’t as bad as I originally thought — but I keeps getting worse.

So I never had gel nails and was afraid to try. Nelly convinced me I would love since her products don’t damage your nail, are organic, no ultra violet light
, dries instantly and lasts for three weeks! Perfect for me as I travel and have. No time to spare.
That first experience was over a year ago and I have been hooked ever since.
Amazing service and I am often complimented on my nails!!!

I’m so sad to be posting this review. I’ve been to the heights salon maybe 6 times over the past two years, and I saw Rafael every time. At first, it was a dream — nice salon, good location, reasonably priced women’s haircuts, and Rafael was very good.
However, this last time, just yesterday, was a disaster. I described what I wanted, as I always do, and was given a much shorter, less attractive cut. It’s going to take weeks for my hair to grow out to a normal length again! And it was entirely because Rafael was just not paying attention. The haircut was painful (lots of yanking) and ultimately very disappointing, and then, to top it all off, I was charged 25% more than usual.
I would call this as a one time thing, except for the fact that two of my girlfriends have had similar experiences with Rafael in the recent past. A bad haircut is a terrible thing, especially when you pay so much for it!
More than writing this review, I’m now really sad that I have to find a different salon.

That cute guy calls and asks you if you might happen to be free after work for a date. The only problem is it’s already noon, you’re at work, and you left the house with your hair looking like a freaking bird’s nest because you didn’t think anyone special would be checking you out that day.
That was me last week when my fiancé (yes! he’s still that cute guy to me!) asked me out to dinner. Unfortunately, the bird’s nest was my head. I called a few other places before calling The Heights, and no one was able to fit me in for a same-​day appointment but the sweet receptionist on the other line at this salon was able to pencil me in for a blow out and some light styling. When I got there a few hours later, I waited no longer than five minutes (and was twice asked if I wanted a glass of wine while waiting) before Neal sat me down in his chair. I showed him some pictures of what I wanted and let me tell you, nothing inspires confidence in your hair stylist more than hearing him/​her say, «YES. Love it. We can totally do that.»
The wash was so soothing, I nearly fell asleep in my chair, and then I was back in Neal’s hands. He was gentle with my hair as he worked and transformed the straw on my head into photo-​ready tresses. I have a lot of hair and most of it has been totally damaged at the ends because of my utter disinterest in hair care but he knew how to work it to make it look shiny and healthy. The whole appointment took about an hour and sixty bucks (since I’d gotten a blow out + styling) and allowed me to be on time for my special date.
As it turns out, my fiancé had no idea I’d done anything to my hair, which was a bit of a bummer, but I got plenty of compliments from others, even two catcalling strangers. I know where I’ll go now for future hair shaping needs and may visit Neal again for a cut.

This is hands down my FAVORITE salon. I have thick curly long hair and am very particular about my stylists. Once I find one I have a very tough time trying anything new! I came to NY for my year abroad in 2011 and searched far and wide for a salon I felt comfortable with. The Heights Salon was a diamond in the rough! I was completely lost without Raphael when I had to move back to Ireland for a year — but as soon as I was back in Brooklyn I booked an appointment straight away — AND he remembered me — it was like coming home to an old friend!
The décor is a charming mix of modern and rustic with clean white walls, beautiful wooden floors and a fabulous fireplace by the coloring station. There is plenty of natural light too which makes it all the more relaxing. The receptionist is very accommodating and always greets me with a smile and by name — that personal touch is very important!
Raphael always cuts my hair. The first time I walked in and he told me I had Kate Middleton hair I was sold haha! He is a genius — knows exactly how to cut thick curly hair so that it is smooth, glossy, flowing and sleek. He expertly tailors my long layers to frame my face and does the most fantastic Kate Middletonesque blowout which has me feeling like a princess all day afterward! They also use a great shampoo conditioner called The One which has a beautiful scent and leaves your hair so light and shiny!
Recently I went there for a blowdry before a formal event. I wanted some curls but was very nervous as previously stylists in other salons had left me with tight poodle like curls rather than the long flowing curls I had asked for. Jennifer did my hair that morning and she did a FANTASTIC job. I brought in some pictures and she was able to give me exactly what I wanted with a combination of a hairdryer and flat iron curls.
They also always offer a glass of wine, which is perfect when you feel like spoiling yourself a little extra!

First, I want to thank you for giving me the courage to try this salon in the first place. I had my first appointment with Joshua in September and was so happy with the results! I could tell that he was a perfectionist and was completely pleased with my decision to trust your wise counsel.
Then when I called back to schedule my «second date» in the New Year, of course he had left and I was lost again in a NY Minute… arrgh. However, the receptionist was so smooth and booked me with a new guy, Neal – before I even had time to reconsider…
And I’m SO glad! Neal is an absolute D*O*L*L: he is kind, thoughtful, talented, meticulous, gentle, intuitive, and a really really great stylist. I am now looking forward to a long-​term relationship with him ;) because my hair is long and often unruly/​frizzy, but he knew just how to tame my long locks and shape my style to fit my face, with no huge changes or scary glitches – just beautiful results.
Not to mention, I never for one minute felt uncomfortable in his presence. We both have Midwestern roots and I loved hanging out with someone who felt like an «old friend.» He’s a keeper.
The Heights Salon definitely has a gem in Neal, and I feel really lucky to have found him! Thanks to all of you who pointed the way–

Came in for a blow out and left looking worse than if I had straightened my own hair. I guess there’s a reason why I’ve lived in the neighborhood 4 years and never stopped in. The receptionist is also not the most friendly person to work in the service industry. I wouldn’t go back.

Let me start this by saying that I’m very picky about my hair and it takes a lot to impress me when it comes to a haircut.
I made an appointment with Joshua because of all of the amazing reviews he got here on Unilocal and I was not disappointed in the slightest. He was amazing and so was he haircut he gave me. He finished it off with such a glamorous blowout that I left feeling like I was walking on air.
In one word, FABULOUS. I’ll definitely be back.

I just got my hair done by Joshua, and I can honestly say I’ve never loved a hair cut more than this one! What I immediately loved about The Heights Salon is that it was low key and not pretentious whatsoever. I walked in, talked to Joshua about my hair, got my hair washed, hair cut, and then I was done. No fuss. Well, just enough fuss. I also loved that nobody in the salon tried to push products on me. I understand that product sales are part of a salon’s bread and butter so to speak but… I’m sorry, I don’t want your volumizing goop du jour, thanks.
On to my AMAZING hair cut… I have long, fine hair, so I’m always trying to find the right cut that will give me lots of volume. After having my hair cut by Joshua, I feel like I literally have twice as much hair. He is SUCH a sweet person and a good listener – I showed him a picture of how I wanted my bangs cut and asked for a trim and my layers fixed, and he did just that. I’m so happy I’ve finally found someone who can do EXACTLY what I want with my hair. Joshua also taught me how to safely curl my hair!
Best salon experience I’ve ever had… and it only cost me $ 64. I highly recommend Joshua!
