The Karcher

Made the mistake of letting Avi trim my bangs instead of my usual stylist (who is AWESOME) and he wrecked my hair. All I wanted was to have my sort of shaggy/​intentionally messy bangs trimmed and in one haphazard snip he lopped them off into an extremely severe blunt bang.
If he didn’t know what my bangs were supposed to look like when they weren’t grown out, why wouldn’t he ask? I could have pulled up a picture on my phone in seconds.
He also cut them so crookedly that I went straight home after the appointment and had to have a friend even them out with my fabric scissors. What a mess.

One week ago, I had my second facial with Vanessa and I’m still feeling the love!
My skin feels wonderful! The products she uses are all natural and they feel great and smell amazing! The entire experience is calm and relaxing and one you’ll wish would never end.
The Spa at The Karcher is in an apartment through the courtyard in the back of the salon, so from the moment you get there, you feel like you have the secret knock to something special.
I cannot wait to get my sister in there for a special day of pampering. A true gem in our awesome neighborhood!

Avi is a color genius. Go see him right away! Jen gives a great cut! Had a facial here today and it was amazing. This is truly an awesome place to go in greenpoint!

I scheduled a facial with Vanessa to check out The Karcher’s new spa and for a much needed break from the harsh winter elements.
It was the best decision of the weekend.
The receptionist lead me through a wonderful outdoor garden, upstairs to the spa space that was very calm and inviting upon arrival.
The whole experience was luxurious– from the warm, cozy massage table to the alkaline water steamed towels that she used after each step of the facial, down to the organic products she customized based on my skin type and skin care regimen.
The facial also included a head, face, and shoulder massage that was beyond relaxing!
Vanessa was so knowledgeable about which natural ingredients help maintain healthy skin; I left the facial feeling like I had just come from a mini-​vacation with awesome wholistic ideas for balanced skin care as souvenirs.
I highly recommend any treatments and services with Vanessa!!!

I’ve received a few truly bad cuts in my day, but I think this one may be the worst. I dislike everything about it. It’s too layered, my bangs never lie flat, the color is uneven. What upsets me most about this unflattering and frustrating cut is that the stylist, Avi, clearly did not listen to what I wanted. I asked for him to keep the shape my hair had, NOT give me an entirely different style. I feel robbed of $ 260 and several inches of hair I had no intention to part with.

Had a facial by Vanessa and it was exactly what I needed!!!
First, Vanessa met me in the salon but then led me through the courtyard up some steps into an adorable apartment in the back. It was quiet and airy and felt like I had left New York all together! Such a peaceful setting! Ambience: Check!
Next, I was pampered with wonderful local sourced, natural products that felt amazing, and Vanessa is super knowledgable and really helped me understand not only the products that she was using on me, but also the products that I use on my skin in my normal routine. Plus the application, massage, hot towels, everything were so relaxing! Life is pretty stressful right now and I desperately want a week on a beach to chill out, but this came pretty close to that level of blissful rejuvenation!
Finally, after she was finished with her magic my skin was glowing and my lashes were tinted dark! I didn’t wear makeup for the rest of the week, which is a pretty big deal for me because I have been having a lot of skin trouble this year from stress and illness and such, so leaving the house without concealer is a BIG deal!
I immediately bought a gift card for one of my best friends and will be going back soon! I can’t recommend Vanessa highly enough!

I have been going to the Karcher for about 5 years (I started when it was The Parlor) but I go so infrequently due to the fact that i never do anything to my hair. I have always received great cuts and NEVER had a complaint. This place is so great and everyone is so nice. On March 17^th, yesterday I went in with every intention of dying my hair. I really didn’t want to but I am going grey and it was starting to bother me and I was just so bored with my hair I needed a change.
I had made an appointment with Avi I had never had him before, turns out it was hist first day. He was the kindest and most gentle soul I had ever met. He looked at my hair and I have dyed it only once or twice almost 4 years ago. I was going to go bronde or do an ombré. I think he could tell how apprehensive I was and we sat and talked about what I wanted. He asked some questions and he suggested maybe a cut if I wasn’t so sure. He was so nice and calming I told him to do whatever he wanted I just couldn’t end up with a pixie cut. I wasn’t ready for that.
I watched him of the next 40 minutes cut large amounts of my hair off, I was mesmerized. He is an artist and my hair looks amazing. I know I am just going to make it harder for myself to get an appointment with him but I want everyone to know how incredible he is. I went in there not really knowing what I wanted or what to do with my hair so I almost chose a drastic dye job. His experience knew what I needed and he led me there. From here on I will only book my appointments with him. My haircut looks so great I can’t even see the grey hair anymore.

Had a great first experience at The Karcher yesterday. I wanted highlights and specifically requested a junior stylist, to spend a little less. Lauren was my stylist, and she made me feel comfortable right away. We looked at pictures first, and I picked out one that I thought was what I wanted. But when I saw the result on me, it was way too blonde and ashy, with a bright streak near my face that I didn’t like. Lauren was really nice about it and she immediately fixed it by adding some lowlights, and then it looked fantastic. I’m super happy with my hair. The salon is beautiful, a very relaxing space, and they serve tea.

I recently started getting facials from Melanie at The Karcher. I had been getting pretty regular facials prior to the opening of the Spa (every 5 weeks) so I have a good idea of what facials should and do feel like. Melanie changed all of that. THIS IS NOT YOUR REGULAR FACIAL EXPERIENCE. THIS IS SO MUCH MORE THAN A FACIAL.
I’m being completely honest when I say that I feel transported the moment the facial begins. Melanie has a way of making 1 hour feel like 2. Her touch is very healing. I can tell she understands my skin and knows what it needs. The experience involves a lot of massage, which I thoroughly enjoy. Most facials are painful, and feel like a necessity but not a pampering or healing experience. Melanie never left the room or used brushes to apply product. This made me feel more connected to her and to the experience. Melanie manages to heal your skin while keeping you relaxed and comfortable.
I am getting married in April and she has a personalized plan for the next two months for my skin. She has tailored the products she uses so I can have the best skin of my life on the best day of my life.
I can tell Melanie loves what she does. It shines through in the experience she offers.

The Karcher is my favorite place to get my hair done in NYC. I received one of the best haircuts, and the best color job of my life, here. I love the dye they use at this salon. It is very reflective and beautiful once applied. Stephanie is my stylist– she is a joy to work with and I highly recommend her. She has such a great sense of everything related to hair and did a great job converting my confusing hair color description into a beautiful look. The Karcher also has a great price point and is a super comfortable and cozy environment.

Just got my hair cut by Jill yesterday. I normally go to Devachan, as I am a curly lady, but didn’t want to make the trek into the city. It’s always scary to go somewhere that may or may not know how to cut for the curly-​haired, but I am happy to report that Jill knows what the f she is doing. So happy to find a great place in the hood!

Alex is pretty much the best thing ever. I love the studio, it’s gorgeous and laid back, everyone has been very friendly and professional. I had a… not so great experience at a salon in Manhattan and ended up having a hard time being willing to try someone else. I met with Alex after reading reviews and seeing what was available for a haircut. She really worked with me to come up with something that fit my lifestyle and would still be cute. The next time I came for color and have gotten multiple compliments. I let her cut 9″ off my hair the last time and am still getting compliments even with it growing out. The price is reasonable and Alex is a doll.
I would recommend her to anyone. I wish I hadn’t moved so that I could continue to go to her.

Received one of the best haircuts and color I’ve had in a WHILE. I don’t do anything crazy to my hair, but Stephanie added new dimension and layers to my hair that other stylists have simply ignored in years past. First time I’ve left with a good feeling after trying out 3 – 4 other salons in the Williamsburg/​Greenpoint area.
Everyone was so friendly, professional and super stylish — same with the environment and salon décor!
Definitely recommend this salon to who ever is considering a first-​time visit.

First of all, I ditto whoever wrote MEG MEG MEG. She’s amazing. But I’ve seen three stylists here (Meg, Jill and Stephanie) and they’re ALL amazing. I came here for a year and out of curiosity, tried a fancy stylist in The Meatpacking District. Reader, I wound up coming back to The Karcher. One, these stylists have more style than their Manhattan counterparts. Two, it’s so mellow and relaxing and nice to be in this salon. Three, it’s affordable. I highly recommend The Karcher. PS: Great job on color!

Love this place, Jill’s amazing. I’ve been going here for a year or so now and she’s great. Super genius with color! I’ve sent a few friends to The Karcher too, and they’ve loved it. I’m a brunette that’s been blonde for a while now, and Jill’s always great at keeping it healthy.
I actually found her by asking a blonde friend where she gets her hair done because it was so natural looking (the only giveaway was her dark brown eyebrows). Her answer: Jill. The place is super, definitely recommend. Great cuts too!

I have two complaints about Karcher. The first issue: I went in for a haircut with asymmetrical hair– the longest part grazed my collarbone while the back reached the base of my neck. I brought in a picture of the style I wanted and discussed with my stylist if it was possible given the texture of my hair and she said it would work. However, instead of the swingy, tousle-​y style I wanted, I got a cut that looks like the hairstyle lovechild of Javier Bardem’s character from No Country For Old Men and Arya Stark. It looks like one side of my head got caught in a high-​powered fan. It’s the kind of cut that prompts everyone I see now to say, «oh, you got your hair cut», blink, and then change the subject. It’s not good.
The second issue: they deemed my decidedly medium-​length hair long so I paid the highest fee for a subpar haircut. I emailed the manager and she asserted that the stylist determines the price given the length and thickness of the hair. I guess the upshot is that if you hate the dreaded in-​between, shoulder-​length phase of growing your hair out, the folks at Karcher will consider you to be a veritable Rapunzel (the downside: they’ll charge you accordingly).
Not so much a complaint but something that grossed me out– they keep the robes and customers’ jackets in the bathroom where they get sprayed with piss water every time someone uses the toilet.
My stylist was nice but lacked an artful hand. I have a haircut that I don’t want them to «fix» given that would require losing more length and I don’t trust in their ability to do any better. I hope that this review is enough to give people second thoughts about going to Karcher. Telling people where I got my hair cut certainly helps. I really wanted to patronize a local business, particularly one owned by a woman, but neither of those factors is enough to overcome their bad technique and questionable pricing policy.

Jill is wonderful! She has been cutting my hair after Cally left for the west coast, and she has given me great cuts and color since. She also did a perfect job on my wedding day for me and my bridesmaids. Elvira is also such a talented makeup artist and will make you look more stunning that you thought you could! The products and makeup they use is really special as well.

I had a haircut from Alex and let me say it was a very enjoyable experience. Everything from the detailed consultation in the chair to the cute robe I got to wear, she really listened to me and gave me just what I needed. Will definitely be going back!

MEG MEG MEG!!! wow! i called for a last minute appointment on the hopes that I could basically walk in. At first, there weren’t any senior stylist available. But the receptionist called right back and booked me with Meg. To be honest, I was horrified to even come in and taking my hat off. My hair was basically ruined. I am a dark brunette and had went platinum. I tried extensions and OVER treated my hair with glosses and keratins. My hair was in bad shape. Totally breaking off at the ends. I had a pretty gnarly mullet situation. But, I’ve been trying to grow my hair out for so long and really was upset to let the 2 inches of cotton candy fairy dust length go. But, I knew it was time.
Meg did a consult with me and really took her time to look at my hair and talk about a plan. I felt so relived. She actually listened. Even when I told her I couldn’t bare to go any shorter than my longest broken piece, she totally respected that. Right as she started cutting, I realized I should probably have some color done. I mentioned it to her and she went above and beyond to move some things around, enroll the shampoo lady into our mission and get my hair colored and glossed. She said she wanted to see it through until the end.
The result a beautiful, chocolate round, bouncy bob. I could not be happier! Sure, do I want long straight blonde hair when I have short, curly brown hair. Yes. But in that quest, I ruined my hair. She brought it back to life and I no longer look like a mangy dog. I could go on and on but the point is GO SEE MEG! She is as sweet and personable as she is talented.
My only gripe, which hello this is New York City was it turned out to be a pretty pricey day after I bought product. The cut was very reasonably priced. I think for demi permanent color it was steep. But, Im really hopeful this color is actually going to lock into my hair. I really have hope that the color and products they use are worth the extra money. None the less, its hard to put a price on no longer feeling ugly. She was a dream to work with and I highly recomend her. I just can’t believe the transformation she did on my hair. What a gal!
