Wine Cellar Sorbets

Yes, these are the same Wine Cellar Sorbets that you can find at Whole Foods. But the one thing you can get here that you can’t get there is the ALCOHOLIC versions of the sorbets ($ 8/​pint).
We came on a Saturday, and knew we were on the right street when we saw a giant barrel advertising sorbet tasting at Wine Cellar Sorbets right when we got to Kent St. As we walked down the street, we were looking for a storefront for Wine Cellar Sorbets, but there wasn’t one. All there is to mark the location is an ice cream cart with an umbrella, and you are actually served the sorbet from the cart! We got to try 8 flavors (they no longer make the sake one) and they were pretty much all delicious. My faves were the Cab and the Riesling.
As long as you don’t mind doing your sorbet tasting while standing on the street at an ice cream cart, this is a fun place to stop for a snack while in Greenpoint.

Wine Cellar Sorbets are just magical.
Imagine champagne, sangria, ruby port, mimosa, sake, cab, rose, pinot noir, and many, many more — frozen and with a touch of sweetness. Yum !!
They’re great as a dessert, and equally great as a base for cocktails. You know grown-​up slushies. Did I say Yum !!
I met David, the founder and Jee, his marketing vp last week at Sunset on the Hudson. They were giving out free samples.
Did someone say free samples? I’m there. If you give me something free, then like you. If it’s free and really good, then all of a sudden you’re a best bud. David and Jee are now best buds.
They rewarded my enthusiasm, by making sure to call me over every time they broke a new flavor. Didn’t I say best buds?
These are now much more widely available, including many if not most WholeFoods Markets nationwide, and many other speciality markets locally and beyond.

Tried most of them at the 2008 Plate by Plate Tasting Benefit. Tried the rest at TastingsNYC. Cab is the best, hands down, then mimosa and reisling. They’re supposed to card you since there is 3% alcohol content in this, but who’s counting. Heck, I’d be flattered to be carded in my current geriatric years. When I confronted them about this, they said there will be a new black container out w/​only 0.5% alcohol in it so no carding needed =)

Disclaimer: This is a local business, so I assume the review is not totally inappropriate, though it is kind of a product review. Not very different than reviewing an independent clothing designer, however, beyond the time limit on this particular type of artistry.

Outside the newest natural grocery on Bedford Avenue, someone had decided to hand out free samples. Being an unabashed cheap mooch, I was compelled, physically, to stop. Upon seeing it was a dessert, «Is it vegan,» flew out of my mouth and before I could even register that I had just temporarily lost control of my body upon spotting free-​sweet-​softandcold, I was assured that it was, and gluten free to boot, and a sample was placed in my hand. Followed by another. And another. Thus, the evening ended perfectly, captured in a 2005 blush summarized by refreshing peach notes and a hint of raisin, a pinot noir betraying its vintage parentage in expressiveness which neither fails an experienced palette nor abandons any other. These sorbets are not palette cleansers, they are focal points, main attractions, but not overpowering as to not pair well (chocolate, champagne, cocktails, smoothies, poached fruit, pastries, and soft cheeses await).
Wine sorbets are no longer only for dessert courses during restaurant week for you cheapies, lazies, and ice-​cream-​makerless gourmands, oh no, you now have six flavors to choose from, produced locally, sold in Whole Foods and shipped where it’s not. I recommend the Rose and Pinot Noir. With 5% alcohol and barely more than 100 calories in each serving, four servings per pint = less calories than a cheeseburger and you’re tipsy. A perfect food?

I happened to be in Dean & Deluca when these guys were having a tasting, and WOW! was my mouth happy. I used to think that living in California was a good thing where wine was concerned, but now I’m not so sure… These sorbets are both winier than I expected, and more flavorful than I could have hoped. They take the perfume of each wine and capture it perfectly in a smooth sorbet. (The taster asked me whether I wanted red or white – they have merlot, syrah, chardonney, etc – and then gave me the opposite of my choice. «Everyone is always surprised at how different they are from the expectation,» he said.)
Now they just need to ship to California!
