It’s now been over ten years since Modern Spaces remodeled my loft downstairs — kitchen, living and dining area, office area, etc.
The quality of the ip20 built-​ins they put in has been outstanding. Easy to clean, still looks as great as it did day one, and functionally, what Richard designed has been fantastic.
I still get comments on the look and functionality, and given it was all custom made for my strangely shaped loft, the price was quite excellent.
Over the last couple of years, every time something small broke, whether it was a light bulb I had trouble finding a match for or the electrical transformer, they’ve been extremely helpful in diagnosing the issue, referring me to the original installer (hey, they work with the same electricians, plumbers, builders for years, that’s got to say something good!) or just offering advice — all for free.
They keep all their records so they were able to look up exactly what part I needed when something did need to be replaced.
In my experience, they will 100% stand by their work and do as much as they possibly can to make a client happy.
A few years ago I decided to add a cabinet at the end to match what I had and they made sure both the design and installation looked seamless!

We had Modern Spaces do a lot of different small/​medium jobs at our house this past year.
Planning and installing interior LED lighting in the common areas and master bathroom, Putting up a window on a wall (planning, ordering, installing and doing all the finishes), Planning closet interiors and installing them, fixing glass shower doors, removing built in furniture and leaving the space and floors spotless, etc.
Two things happened: 1– The original window ordered wasn’t sized correctly because after opening the wall, existing electric wires that could’t be moved didn’t allow the window to fit. Modern Spaces quickly ordered a new window and took care of everything in a very professional and easy going way, still very efficiently.
2– One of our LED fixtures had problem after 10 months and we called Modern Spaces. They immediately took care of it and didn’t even charge us.
John and Richard are incredibly nice to work with. Randy their handyman is also very nice and skilled. Any permits required were 100% acquired by Modern Spaces.
I would/​will definitely work with Modern Spaces again.
John and Richard (owners) were always around and hands on and checking all the jobs that were done by their guys.

These guys did an amazing job delivering exactly what I wanted, when I had them design and build a custom built in wall desk. They started with a good design and they have a fantastic installer. It was not inexpensive, but it was exactly what I wanted. It was well worth waiting for and I appreciate that they don’t just hire a bunch of second or third rate people to take on more jobs or produce quicker. It has been 8 months and I absolutely love my desk. High quality materials and workmanship. Thank you Richard, John and Randy! You get what you pay for and these guys delivered. I would highly recommend them.

John, Randy, and Richard from Modern Spaces installed a wall bed unit for me. For the price, the quality is outstanding. Excellent service, very efficient installation. I am a happy client, and I would highly recommend Modern Spaces.

A few months ago, I moved from a 1350 sq ft loft to a 450 sq ft condo. Richard (with John and Randy) turned my tiny condo into a lovely and very functional space where the use of every inch of space has been maximized. IP20, the manufacturer that they use for their custom cabinets, is in Germany so the process was long and there were a few glitches, but nothing out of the ordinary when dealing with home improvement. Richard and staff are very friendly, personable, responsive, and quite accomodating. But above all, they are very professional and experts at what they do. Without them, I don’t know how I would have managed to move into my tiny condo. Thanks to them I love it!

Modern Spaces designed and built a kitchen island for my apartment at the Arterra. Though this was a small project, John gave this the same level of attention as one would expect for an entire kitchen. From design to completion, he was a gentleman and entirely professional – providing design advice on three visits, a thoroughly presented and reasonable budget, regular project updates, and on-​time completion. Though a kitchen island might not seem like the ‘sexiest’ project, the result was quite beautiful – excellent materials and architecturally pleasing. In sum, this was a perfectly executed project from beginning to end: on time, on budget, ideal result. Thanks, John, very much!

I love these guys. Everything was done with skill and care. The remodel took longer than we would have liked, but that’s what we get for starting a project over the holidays. John and Randy were as accommodating and considerate as possible. The results are wonderful. I don’t know how else to express our pleasure with the experience and the job. 100% recommendation.

I am sorry that B.B. had negative things to say. We are all entitled to our opnions, but I found Richard and Modern Spaces to be very professional and the product they installed for us is fantastic. This is a terrific company. We’ve lived in our small contemporary house for ten years. Before we even placed a bid, we consulted Richard about the feasibility of remodeling it. We bought the house, which Richard then redesigned for us entirely.
A few years later when he and John founded Modern Spaces, we worked with them to create a study/​guest room and storage room from our dirt basement, to divide a room in another part of the house, to design built-​ins for a t.v. area. (That built-​in is featured on their web site.) For us, they are the «go to» guys for all our design and contracting needs. They are reliable and honest. What more can I say?

I live a condo that came with very little storage space so a couple of years ago I called Richard at Modern Spaces to help me with my storage issues. He custom designed bookshelves and a china cabinet for my living room, shelving for my bathroom and a bookshelf/​filing cabinet for my bedroom. I have had numerous compliments about the custom built-​ins, especially the living room bookshelves, which help make my formerly crowded living room look spacious and neat.
Earlier this year, I asked Richard to design and build a computer desk and shelving in my bedroom, and again I have received many compliments on the work. The people at Modern Spaces are a pleasure to work with and the ip20 furniture, while expensive, is top quality. I’ll be sure to call on Modern Spaces again for future work.

Well, I have to say that going into my experience with Modern Spaces I was excited and hopeful. It was an expensive endeavor, but their product looked beautiful and Richard, the consultant/​owner who came to look at our bedroom space, helped us lay out a plan for beautiful custom cabinets, made in Europe and assembled here, that we would have installed and be using in 12 weeks time. Seemingly well worth the money, especially when trying to work out something efficient in a difficult space. Unfortunately, it was the beginning of 8 months of utter frustration, disappointment and chaos.
Our experience with them consisted of the following:
~Unreturned phone calls when we needed measurements
~Missing pieces in the order, extending the finish date several weeks.
~No explanation on what exactly «installation» would entail, which would have been nice to know *before* they carved into our walls and hacked out the baseboards.
~Installation done incorrectly… more than once.
~More missing pieces.
~Wrong handles and knobs installed, needing to be reordered and re-​installed.
~Problems with the measurements being incorrect, requiring another re-​order.
~Extra visits (read, extra time taken out of MY day) to correct the placement of grommet holes, paint touch ups etc.
There were SO many things that went wrong with the ordering and instillation that it would be impossible to lay it all out here. But the worst part of all the problems was the poor (sometimes non-​existent) communication we got. No one bothered to let us know parts were missing and there would be further delay’s. No one called back with an actual answer when we needed simple measurements. The installer didn’t explain to us exactly what needed to be done, or when things were missing and he didn’t follow our instructions on certain specifications. And the company clearly didn’t communicate to him or vice versa every time we made a phone call with another problem. It was chaotic at best, to the point where we could only laugh at the absurdity, lest we have the urge to go injure someone.
I am disgusted at the frequency with which I, the customer, had to take the initiative to call them to find out what was going on, and at the lack of answers I got in return. For the price I was paying, I expected a certain level of customer service, and what I got was a 3-​Ring-​Circus. And the Big-​Top just continued on, even after we wrote a letter half-​way through the debacle expressing our frustration. They did make an attempt to be concerned about all the problems, but unfortunately the problems just continued… all the way to the bitter end.
And you want to know the clincher? Toward the end, after «3 months» turned into EIGHT, when we were still experiencing problems with them getting it installed right, they had the nerve to ask us, more than once, to pay the balance due! The balance that was due AFTER completion, not in the midst of ongoing problems. Talk about insult to injury.
At the end of the day, yes. the cabinets look nice and are efficiently functional. But there is no question that there are other custom companies who run a more professional show out there, and in this case, the END did NOT justify the means. The one star is ONLY for the actual product.
