I respect that everyone else loves this place. Cool! Obviously, you’re far more likely to get a great cut here than a bad one. That was not my experience, which may be useful information to someone.
«My, that’s a loud TV», I thought to myself when I entered the place. It was blaring some rubbish in which some men were talking about baseball and makeup or something, but the salient point was the volume.
The barbers courteously greeted me, and one immediately asked me to have a seat. The vibe was great, with the barbers cheerfully greeting their regulars.
He asked what I wanted, which I described as best I could, as I’ve been doing for 20 years. Normally I get something somewhat close to what I have in mind, less so this time. I wanted a pretty standard whiteboy yuppie nerd cut (not how I described it to him! I gave him more specific length information) without abrupt transitions, but I ended up with what happens when you let the front part of a mohawk grow in for 3 weeks: buzzed in back and up the sides, and a very long tuft on top. I know that those seem to be quite fashionable in Boston nowadays, but I have never before experienced such a disregard for my opinions about my hair. For what he decided to do, perhaps he did a tolerable job, taking the time to carefully execute his vision.
When he saw that I was dismayed, he told me (it took a few repetitions) that I needed a scissor cut, because he’d already used the longest attachment on his electric trimmer. Well, (1) yes, the best haircuts I’ve had have been scissor cuts, (2) I’ve had perfectly good ones with electric trimmers, (3) the attachment he showed me after the cut should leave hair much longer than mine is, if the barber chooses, and (4) when a customer asks for something that you maybe wonder whether you can do with an electric trimmer, why not make sure of what he wants, and adjust your tools or refer the customer to someone who can, rather than ignoring the request and instead doing something compatible with your equipment?
I can only assume that between the fact that his accent was quite strong – and therefore it’s reasonable to assume that to him, my (native-​USA-​and-​Canada-​English) accent was quite strong – and the fact that the TV was turned up so loud that all communication required repetition and a voice volume appropriate to a rave – he misunderstood what I wanted, and did his best based on what he thought he heard.
Am I weird to think that it’s stupid to run such a loud shop that communication is difficult? Am I crazy to think that the barbers should make sure they understand correctly what the customer wants, ask clarification questions, and be sensitive to the chance that they might be misunderstanding? Write it off to miscommunication, and take the criticism for creating an environment that makes good communication difficult and doesn’t care to double-​check. Maybe it was just my barber. Maybe it was just that day. But based on the other reviews, it’s frequently loud.
Update: it’s not just me. Everyone has been very polite and has allowed that if I comb and maintain it just so it «doesn’t look too awful from this angle». But more of my friends than not have offered to improve it with whatever scissors or knives or axes are laying around.

I’ll keep it short and sweet, like the cuts these guys do. Friendly atmosphere and good dudes here. Got a basic white guy cut for $ 17 (TIP YOUR BARBERS) with minimal wait time.
These guys know what they’re doing, nice close shave around ears and neck. Check em out if you’re hair is in need of a mow.

Let me start this review off by saying I am INCREDIBLY picky about my haircut. With that being said, my man Julio hooked it up. First time stopping by the shop and he cut my hair like he’s known me for years. The attention to detail was spot on, and he took his time and listened to exactly what I said. The shop is great too and the rest of the guys seemed like they shared Julio’s passion for their craft. If your looking for a no frills barbershop that takes what they do incredibly seriously, stop by Troy Anthony’s.

I’ve had cuts with Wynter and Julio; they are both fabulous. Super friendly guys and always spend a really long time perfecting my hair. They aren’t so much barbers as they are artists and sculptures! I always leave feeling refreshed and relaxed. They are also super queer friendly — I’m trans* and they are good with pronouns and everything. Love them!

I’ve had terrible experiences with barbers in Boston, until I went here. Undoubtedly, Damon gave me the best haircut I’ve had since moving out here. Prices are fairly cheap, and there’s always a quick turnaround if you avoid peak hours. And all the normal banter and music you expect out of a barber shop!…5 star rating from me!

I arrived at the shop early Saturday hoping to get a quick cut just before a performance at MIT. My hair was personally cut by Troy. He was funny and professional and did an excellent job cutting my hair and building a great relationship. In fact, I spoke at MIT in March of 2013, but I NEVER got rid of his card because I was so impressed with the shop vibe and Troy.

As a female, walking into a barbershop can be intimidating… not at Troy Anthonys! Everyone there made me feel so comfortable. The atmosphere is happy, friendly, and makes you not mind the wait. Wynter hooked my cut up AMAZINGLY. Best shop I’ve been to and I will be returning!

could not make it to my regular place so i decided to give these guys a try i went in an our before they closed and didn’t have to wait long to get helped the barber took his time and it was a quality cut and price was right

I came to Troy Anthony’s because my old barber just wasn’t cutting
it. Well. Badum-​ching. Real talk: barber shops exist at the nexus of necessity and vanity. I’m just as prone to practicality as I am to style, so for me, it’s all about balance. I want a barber shop that is comfortable, unpretentious, fun and cuts hair well.
My experience:
Walk in, sit down, wipe face (it’s pouring outside). «How you doing buddy?» Came at me simultaneously from two of the barbers. «Come take a seat!» from one of them. A+ for the attentiveness. One of the greeters was cutting a guy’s hair in his own chair, but still acknowledged me over the blaring flatscreen tv– while cutting hair to his own personal soundtrack on his beats by dre headphones. Can I plus a million stars that right there?
Verdict: my cut took a long time, and I was grateful for the meticulous attention my barber gave me despite the overwhelming sensory overload: TV on full blast, jams just loud enough to win over the tv, 5 barbers, all conversing with each other a well as their respective clients, a full bench of guys waiting and talking, and to top it off, a guy trying to hawk bootleg dvds to everyone in the house.
My barber looked like the youngest guy in there. He was thorough, explained what he was doing and why, and was genuinely friendly. My previous haircut was a disaster, but this guy took care to fix it, and was a consummate professional when his curiosity got the better of him; after 45 minutes, he finally asked where I had gone for my previous haircut, but then stoped short of saying anything negative about it our who gave it.
Everyone was really, really nice, and it was fun, too. A guy dropped a $ 20 on the floor when he got up and literally four people rushed to point it out and help him.
Side note: I admit, I picked up a strong «brotherly» vibe, and wondered if these guys even had any experience cutting longish, silky, overly conditioned white guy hair. (There was a lot of good hip hop, reggae and r&b about, dew rags a plenty.) My questions about the breadth of their ability were quickly answered; they definitely know what they’re doing.
I felt welcomed. And seriously, I feel like Don Draper. Hats off to (and because of) Troy Anthony’s, my new barber.

A good haircut in a good place.

Just got a sharp haircut as a walk-​in during lunch time. Took about an hour total after waiting 20 min. The guy took his time and did a precise taper cut, while taking feedback very well. I’d go back even if they charged more than $ 15.

I live in Framingham and I try to make it out there every 2 weeks or so for a haircut… i have been going to these guys for about 6 years… simply the best!!!
They are all great barbers but Troy is my favorite!!!

1. Hip hop and motown on the boom box
2. Sportscenter on the TV
3. Barbers and regulars bantering about sports and dropping awful yo’ mama jokes
4. Not any more expensive than SuperCuts for great, personal service
5. I’m a cheapskate who only drops by once every 4 months when I get really shaggy, but Troy always remembers my name
One star for each of the above, plus a great haircut every time, equals five stars!
Two caveats: make sure you’ve got an hour or two if you walk in (they’re always busy!), and don’t drive there unless you like hunting for street parking.

I heard Troy Anthony’s could hook a sister up with a $ 5 4-​pack of fusion razor blades, and my cheap ass sure couldn’t turn that down!
So, at the advice of my roommate (who also warned me that this place is full of dudes and they listen to motown), I made my way around the corner on my way to cheap razor blade heaven.
Parking was tough, since it was that time last week when we had alternating rain monsoons and snow storms, but I made it work like Tim Gunn and popped in one afternoon on my lunch break.
Lots of dudes staring me down as I walked in the door? Check.
Motown pumping on the stereo? Check.
$ 5 razor blades? FAIL.
When I demurely asked if they still carried the fusion blades, I was responded to with a quick, «Not no more.» Bummer.
However, I would say that if you’re a dude looking for a haircut, the place was packed so they must be pretty okay.
