Hyatt House San Diego Carlsbad

It is a very clean hotel and great place to stay with kids. We stayed in the Double Queen suite for four nights when traveling in San Diego. It is nice to have a small kitchen so you can cook some simple comfort food for the kids. The staffs are friendly. Free shuttle to and from Legoland is a plus. The simple Breakfast is ok just don’t expect too much.

Their website, sales staff when we booked and sticker on the fridge says there’s a free snacks and drink social 4 nights a week… but they apparently don’t have that anymore so keep that in mind when booking here. If a place advertises an amenity they should actually have it when you get there and it is too late to cancel. Some people might call it false advertising or outright fraud. Other than that, overall average place to stay. Kitchenette is very small, even for a kitchenette. Beds soft, 2 queen room sleeps 7 on pullout and extra lounge.

The positives: The staff so far have been very friendly. The room (a king suite), although a bit smaller than we expected, is clean and thoughtfully appointed. There’s even a list of additional things (small appliances, hair dryer, etc) that can be borrowed from the front desk.
The negatives: I’m kicking myself for not getting a room on the top floor, because this place is LOUD! Not only is there noise from rooms on either side, but the family above us sound like a herd of elephants. Starting before 7am, there was smashing and loud thumping, people dragging furniture across the textured tile in the kitchenette, someone rocking back and forth on a wobbly chair/​stool on the tile which resulted in a constant banging above us. Especially in the bathroom it sounds as if there’s just a thin piece of plywood between the floors. I was treated to the sound of the father belching, farting, hocking up loogies, etc. Out in the hallway, there were multiple families with kids yelling, screaming, crying, etc. For a place that’s intended for longer stays, you’d think they would have installed a little bit of soundproofing for the comfort of guests.
Additionally, people should be cognizant of the fact that, even though it’s called Hyatt House, you are actually NOT at home and should be more mindful of you and your family’s noise level. It never ceases to amaze me the sense of entitlement and disrespect that most parents have and unfortunately are instilling in their children. I don’t expect tomb-​like silence in a hotel, but when a child runs screaming down a hotel hallway and a parent never says a word to correct this disruptive behavior, that’s just rude and bad parenting. Kids will be kids, but parents should be parents. Ok, that’s the end of my grumpy-​old-​man rant.
As others have noted, there’s also a train that goes by fairly frequently through the day/​evening. It’s not something the hotel can control, so I’m not faulting them for it; but it’s something to take into consideration if you have kids (or adults) that would be napping during the day because the horns blast loudly as it passes by.
2 other smallish gripes:
1. The pillows are awful. They’re so soft that your head sinks down to the point where you’re pretty much right on the mattress. Also, whatever the filling is retains heat, and since your head is essentially touching both sides at the same time due to the compression, there is no «cool side.» Instead of just flipping it over, I had to switch out pillows numerous times through the night since the pillows got so warm.
2. There is no exhaust fan in the bathroom. You also can’t open the windows. So in a small space with both a bathroom and a kitchen, there’s absolutely no way to vent out any malodorous air. Not good.
It’s unfortunate I can’t rate the place higher because the room is attractive, comfortable, & really has some thoughtful and useful perks. It’s just too bad there are some downsides that are quite glaring… especially if you’re planning to stay for an extended time.

Needed a hotel close to home and was impressed by the thoughtful amenities, gracious staff, food (evening snacks and breakfast) and great room configuration for a family. For the price, I could not have asked for more. Thanks for being our home away from home.

Loved this hotel, everyone very nice, great for our Legoland getaway and they accept pets and free breakfast! We will come back!

Sad excuse for a Hyatt property. I smelled mold as soon as I got in the room. Tried to tough it out but then I got a bad headache. Then I noticed there was a big sign on the ceiling just outside my room announcing that there was a Verizon tower on the roof right above me. Looks like the owners are making a quick buck from Verizon, while exposing guests to dangerous rays. Maybe that’s what the headache was from.
Anyway, I moved to a «less» moldy smelling room after the clerk made me feel like I was the problem. Then I got a 4am wake up call when the alarm clock went off.
This place is not a good spot even for a night. The rooms are dirty, moldy and it’s too close to the freeway. Spend a few more bucks and stay at the Hilton down the street.

Hidden costs, unfriendly staff, etc. You can find better bargains, friendlier staff without hidden costs nearby. You’ve been warned.

Wow. After 6 weeks, just got a refund for a night I did not spend there, that they had tacked on to my bill. Why didn’t I spend that night there? Arrived late to find the room was fumigated with cigarette smoke. I can handle a little of that, but this was uninhabitable. (And no one noticed that?) I had kids with me so could not sleep in that room. there were no «similar» rooms available there, so after pressuring them for some kind of help for about 45 minutes, they found me a nearby room at Hyatt Place and said they would comp me for the night. Instead, both hotels charged me and I’ve spent many, many phone calls since then trying to get both charges refunded.
Unfortunately, after approximately 20 conversations with everyone *but* the general mgr Lynn Amman (who, strangely, is *always* «not on the premises right now» and who has never returned one of my calls in 6 weeks) they refunded the money to my friend’s card, because she booked the reservations. Not my card, which is the one that was charged (twice).
Oh, and the shuttle to Legoland? Super, super nice drivers (the only bright spot in our stay) but the front desk has a different system depending on who you ask. One young staff member, each time I would try to call the shuttle would always say, without looking up from her work, «First come, first serve.» But the drivers would always ask who had a reservation and take them first. Other staffers had their own systems, so it would just depend on who you got. This matters because the shuttle is overbooked and can only take 7 people, so you would have to wait often.
The people at the front desk did not smile, do not seem to like people, and generally did not know what was going on. So each visit to try to get something done was a fresh adventure. Communication systems broken… each time I’d get something worked out with someone on any front, the information was never shared with anyone else and I’d have to start from zero when I picked the conversation back up.

I had a mixed experience here. Some of the staff was so friendly and helpful, but some of the other staff was just rude and insecure. We stayed here for almost TWO months.
If you are staying here for a maximum of three days, it’s just fine. Any longer and you will not be happy. I wrote a massively long letter to Hyatt expressing the many inconsistencies in customer service and quality of food. They gave me a few nights stay at any of their hotels. Here is a brief summary of my experience:
Some of the staff were very friendly. They talked with us and helped us. Some didn’t even look us in the eye and didn’t offer to open the door when my arms were totally full. I asked to be changed to a different room with different sized beds and when I walked into the new room the floor was wet and it stunk of chemical deodorizer. I felt as if I wanted to vomit from the overwhelming smell. When the front desk man moved my stuff back from the new room to the old room two dollars from the maids tip was mysteriously gone. I asked him who else entered the room and he said «nobody» so obviously, he was the only person who could have taken some money from the maid that I left out. I talked to the maid and asked her about who else would come in and even SHE was suspicious of his behavior. I complained to the man on duty and he just apologized and said he wished he could do something for me. It was a complete cop out.
For the first two weeks, the breakfast and evening cocktail hour (free) food were actually quite delicious. THen, all of a sudden, the quality dropped to disgusting and with little food being offered. I asked the staff and they said that the cook left and some of the random staff were just filling in and putting out chips and making gross food. It was very disappointing.
The housekeeping staff was very thorough and correct. Dishwasher broke once while we were there. The filter of the ice machine was so filthy that someone tossed the filter on the floor (certainly in disgust) to make it a point to management to clean it! I was the one who told management that it was on the floor.
There is a heated swimming pool and spa. They are nice. There is a gym. There is a kitchen in the suites but no table — just a bar — so it was very awkward for us to feed our babies. We had to ask for a high chair from the dining room.
There is a little snack area where one can buy food, drinks, and snacks in the event that you’re hungry or thirsty in the middle of the night. But they are little expensive.
The washing machines and dryers are very old and expensive. It was like $ 6 to wash and dry one load. Whatever!
Don’t stay in a bedroom by the highway — it is SO LOUD. If you must stay here, stay on the pool side. It’s pretty quiet except for students from the GIA school and people partying around the pool until 10PM.
When I drive by this place, I shudder, feeling sorry for the good people who do work here. I hope they find something better. It was not a pleasant experience for us.

Wonderful experience:
— breakfast is ok, it will be nice to have more healthy options
— room is nice & spacious
— personnel is very nice & supportive
— pool is heated
— Mo-​Th they have guest reception 5−7pm: if you’re not picky than you can have almost a free dinner here!
— Wi-​Fi is average, better for you to have your own option if you plan to upload a lot of photos from your trip

We just stayed overnight. This place was nice, comfortable, quiet and reasonable in price. We were on the side close to the freeway but it didn’t keep us from getting a great night sleep. Beds are kind of soft so woke up sore. The king studio room was huge, big enough for a small family.
The hotel is close to the beach, I wouldn’t say walking distance but by car a few minute drive. I was very happy with our stay, if we were to stay in Carlsbad again I would stay here.

and thought that we were getting a good deal. When we arrived we found out that the price was lower booking through the hotel itself. Chris the front desk was very accomodating even gave my kids free gummy bear. The room was clean, food was decent, love that they had an omelet station, and the location to legoland was awesome. Will surely come back to this hotel.

On our trip to Carlsbad to see Legoland, we stayed at the Hyatt House. It was more affordable than the Legoland Hotel and was only 5 min. away. Great staff, front desk to the housekeeping, very nice people. I ever come back to Legoland this is where I will stay. Mahalo from Hawaii.

Breakfast and shuttles to/​from Legoland are pluses.
We requested a room away from the elevavator and freeway noise but did not get it… Instead we got the first room on a heavily trafficked, noisy hall with a bunch of obnoxious families who thought it was OK to run down the halls yelling after 9 and 10 pm. And we were facing the freeway. The woman at the front desk had guaranteed us that the room would be quiet. Lie. Wonderful… Thankfully our toddler was exhausted and fell asleep despite the noise.
BUT they made up for it with a room change the next day — top floor, king bed, room farthest away from elevator, and they moved our luggage for us while we were off at Legoland (including our son’s pack ‘n play)… AND they credited us $ 50.
So, our story has a happy ending, and we will be back!

By far my favorite Hyatt house yet. We usually stay at Regency’s or Grand’a but this one has done a fantastic job making a Hyatt house feel like the customer service we get at a high end hotel. From the front desk greeting and call for early check in to the social hour with pizza and wine (it differs everyday) I was SO IMPRESSED! My husband is diamond and we only stay at Hyatt. This Hyatt House is a FANTASTIC example of what every Hyatt experience should be. 5 stars!
(Having just come from the Mission Bay Regency this one WAY SURPASSES the last experience.)

This place is THE go to hotel for a Legoland visit. The free breakfast and evening snacks («dinner» to the frugal) were great and better than what I had expected. The rooms are clean but maybe a little small if you end up using the pull out sofa bed. Everything is clean enough for my germaphobic DW. The staff is friendly and warm. Make sure you tip the lady slugging endless drinks at the happy hour!

Not a bad place. It is full of families even though its a bit away from Lego Land. I chose this place because it was a distance away from Lego land because I did not want to stay in a hotel that was full of kids.
Haha so much for that.
This is not the hotel’s fault though and to their credit they put me in the corner where kidless grouches go, first floor. I did not even have to ask. It did not stop me from hearing a argument between a Father and his 7 year old son” I DONT WANNA COME DOWN THE STAIRS“
This was repeated every few seconds at top decibel range until I felt my teeth began to chatter. I was almost going to open the door, since I like to sleep in when all went silent. I actually grew a little afraid for the little crying urchin. But as I stumbled back to bed I consoled myself knowing if anything HAD happened to the rug rat, I would read all about it in my complimentary newspaper the next morning.
THE ROOM– It was clean, a little crowded with furniture but had a kitchenette, Sofa bed, and the bed was comfortable.
THE BATHROOM-​For some strange reason the toilet paper roll was hooked on the side of the bathroom that was farthest away from the toilet. So unless you are plastic man and can stretch your arms a few extra feet while sitting on the toliet, you will have to get up and go over to the paper. WEIRD.
You have to turn the shower on to the 11 o clock position to get a hot shower, just a note. I had it at the 12 o clock and it was luke warm at best, then spouse came in and turned in to the 11 o clock and hot water and smiles was had by all.
The AC works fine and is not over the top loud like some other person said. I also could not even hear the freeway. The main entrance is a little dark but it is nothing like going down in to a dark dungeon.
The thing about this hotel is that it is a older hotel but it has tried to update it’s look. But without a major renovation they can only do so much. What they have done is good, flat screen tv, nice kitchenettes with convection ovens and stainless steel appliances (I will not ask about the clashing bathroom counter and sinks though) You do see a little of the wall paper peeling and the couches do not look their best but hey they are trying.

we had the best time and stay here at the Hyatt House Carlsbad. The amenities are just what we needed and then some.
The staff are TRUE customer service reps at best. They will go out of their to help anyone that asks for it. If you decide to stay here, please make sure you ask for Loren at the front desk. SHE IS THE BOMB!!! Thank you Loren for the best time we have had in a LONG LONG LONG TIME!
The breakfast is buffet style and very good. They cater to all… I would stay here again NO MATTER WHAT THE COST. Its definitely a family spot.

I’ve stayed in many hotels and rooms, and I must say that the Hyatt House is a great deal for what you pay.
The pluses:
A roomy studio (which is where my wife, myself, and our infant stayed in), 1 Bedroom, or 2 Bedrooms suites with a kitchenette, stove, fridge, and utensils. This is great for packaging leftovers or even bringing in your own food to cook, especially since a huge chunk of costs for vacation is generally food.
Free breakfast every morning — generic breakfast — cereal, bagels, toasts, coffee, teas, juice, milk, and hot foods such as eggs, bacon, and pancakes or french toast.
If you stay during the week — free drinks (including alcoholic beverages) from 5:30 — 7:00 with snacks/​appetizers included!
Kid Friendly! This by far is the biggest thing for me. Every event you can have kids participate. I saw many parents with their kids during the evening hours and breakfast hours.
Located near a lot of great food and the beach! Carlsbad Village is a skip a way. The beach is down the street.
Free shuttle service within 5 miles of the hotel with drop off and pick up!
Con — the only con I have is the fact that it is next to the free way and next to the amtrak line. You can hear the trains occasionally. You can also hear the freeway traffic. This doesn’t really bother me, however, I know it would bother several people staying in the hotel.

It really makes me wonder when I read the positive reviews about this place. I had to move out for a few days due to construction issues and thought I would try this place. I have never been in such a depressing, boring, chemical-​smelling place in my life.
The entrance doesn’t have glass doors so you enter a dark, ugly minimalist (but not nice minamalist) lobby area. I booked a mini suite ’cause it had a nice kitchen (supposedly). What a depressing room! There was absolutely no décor — just a bed and night tables in the bedroom, and a couch and desk in the other room. No attempt whatsoever to make this a homey, pleasant place with pleasant furnishings. The smell of disinfectant was so strong even Joey the dog turned up his nose.
I looked around for a minute and then told the bellhop to take my bags back downstairs and we moved to the lovely, homey West Inn.
I wouldn’t set foot in this place again if you paid me, nor would I recommend it to my guests.
Hyatt, what is up with this? A big time yuck.
