Specialties
The Clay Centre is a group of working studios near downtown Carrboro, NC. Many of us specialize in handmade pottery; two of our artists are painters. The Clay Centre Gallery is our venue for showing and selling our work. The Gallery is open Monday — Friday, 10am — 4pm. Clay artists at work can often be seen during those hours. We also have seasonal sales and are part of the Orange County Artists Guild Studio Tour, the first two weekends in November and again in the spring. Come and visit our gallery!
History
Established in 2002.
In 2002, Barbara and Jim Higgins built the Clay Centre to be a studio for a group of clay artists who had worked together for many years. For 10 years, we offered clay classes as well as studio space; we no longer offer clay classes, but do have a small studio for our continuing students. Most of our artists work in clay, although this past year, two painters joined our artists. The Clay Centre Gallery has been part of the complex since the beginning and is a small gallery of the beautiful work produced at the Clay Centre. All work is made on site and reflects the style and medium of the artist.
Meet the Business Owner
Barbara H.
Business Owner
Barbara Higgins has been working in clay for over 30 years, as a studio artist and as a teacher. Her work in porcelain and stoneware is textured with unique stamps and intricate carving. She loves to make Asian-inspired teapots, tea bowls, plates, platters, bowls, small dishes and serving pieces. Inspired by travel to Japan, some of her imagery might include water, lilies, dragonflies, cranes, and Bodhi leaves. She works in her studio adjacent to the Gallery, and if visitors ask, will show them how her pieces are made. It’s a pleasure to meet our customers and let them in on the secrets of our work!
