History

Established in 1932.

The parent company GS Carter & Son Inc, 2143 Heriot Street, Charleston, SC 29 403 was established in 1932. The self-​storage business began on 8÷22÷1994.

In 1932, GS Carter & Son, the parent company for Carter’s City Self Storage, was founded by Grayson S. Carter, Sr. on Heriot Street in Charleston, South Carolina. The original family business on the site was a lumber business which has spanned 4 generations of Carters. In 1998, Grayson S. Carter, III decided to expand the use of the property to include a Self Storage Facility to provide for the changing needs of the area.

Several of the original lumber buildings were renovated to provide various sized climate controlled as well as regular units. At the same time, several commercial warehouses and contractor units were constructed to provide customers with additional storage options. Throughout the years, Carter’s City Self Storage has remained a family business that caters to its customers as if they were family.
