Description

Specialties

Second Helping specializes in soul food with a twist. We offer traditional menu items such as fried chicken, meatloaf, shrimp and grits, macaroni and cheese, and collard greens. We also offer non traditional options such as fried green tomato casserole, black eyed pea cakes in addition to a large variety of home-style side dishes that appeal to vegetarians. Many of our customers are health and community conscious and when possible, fresh produce is used from local farmers.

History

Established in 2011.

Second Helping is a division of Changed Choices and was established to provide job opportunities for formerly incarcerated women. In its early stages, Second Helping provided coffee and snack carts in office buildings. Eventually we expanded into catering and now have a take-out only café on Central Avenue (between Plaza and Eastway) in Charlotte, NC. We are continuing to expand and now offer Take-Home Meals for families and church groups in addition to our catering services.

Meet the Manager

Monique M.

Manager

Monique did not let challenges from her childhood determine her future. After graduating from high school and college she left North Carolina for a bright future in Atlanta. She returned to North Carolina, made some bad decisions which led to a 236 month sentence. It was in prison where Monique started being honest with herself. During this time she met volunteers from Changed Choices and fully embraced Changed Choices principles. Monique started a new life and began reading from the Bible, praying, and attending church activities. Upon release Changed Choices welcomed her with open arms. She turned her love for cooking into a new profession and now is the manager of Second Helping.
