Goddammit !!! Another area gem has closed. Clara’s was the place where two people could get a mammoth pile of awesome hash browns and eggs for under $ 10.
Why review a closed establishment? Because I’m still pissed at the yuppification and desire for strip malls within the city limits that the transplants have brought with them! Oh, what will open? A Subway? A Qdoba? A Qweeez-​nose?!? F***!

Sadly, Clara and James closed at the end of January, 2009. The space has already been gutted by the owner. I’m going to miss those amazing hash browns.

I love this place. It’s literally a minute from my front door. The waitress here calls you sweetie and treats you like you’re the best customer there. The food is great.
They have a sign in they’re window that they are going out of business it’s really depressing.

I spent many years as a diner waitress at various establishments in my home town and here in Chi, so I consider myself a discerning connoisseur of over easy eggs.
For me, the «perfect diner» has to have just a couple of things:
1. a counter
2. waitresses who call you «honey»
3. some kind of early bird breakfast special for an eye-​popping price
Clara & James delivers the goods! The food’s cheap, the waitresses are sweet, and the eggs and hash browns are deliciously greasy. Add to that the inexplicable décor (carpeting on the wall in front of the counter? huge airbrushed Wyle E. Coyote?) and you’ve got yourself one of the best little breakfast joints in the whole city.

Classic dive diner, cheap food, closed by 3pm. I don’t get here very often, but I make a special trip for the hash browns. These days, for some reason, hash browns are a dying art form and here they rock. I have to saw if these aren’t the best around, please tell me where they have better hash browns because I’ll go there too. As for the rest of the food, decent, standard breakfast fare. Pancakes, french toast, eggs, bacon all good. I have driven 20 minutes out of my way, on several occasions, just to pick up a double order of hash browns and a side of bacon. All for around $ 5, for a Styrofoam container of greasy heaven.

Great diner ambience. Best hash browns in town? Don’t think so! However, the service is great, and very, very cheap prices for damn good diner food. Like the sunny corner location too. Grab a Sun-​Times and get your brunch here for a bill of less than $ 5. Coffee is decent as well.

The outside says «Clara and James»; the menus just say «Clara’s». Did Clara tell James to hit the road, and that she could handle things on her own?
These folks do know their hash browns. If you’re a connoisseur, it’s probably worth the trip just for those. As someone else said they do cut corners in other places, like putting margarine instead of butter on the toast, though thankfully not on the strength of the coffee like Some places I’ve been. Overall, you can do worse for a greasy breakfast, and if you live where I live, you really don’t have too many options within a mile radius of the crib.

This is my favorite breakfast place. its cheap and its good. They still hand peel and slice potatoes for their has browns. and if you order ham they carve it from the bone. Its not fancy, its not trendy but its good. I have taken many people to this diner.

Clara’s is quickly becoming another «cheap eats» place for me. They’re not open past 2PM M-​F, or 4PM weekends, but they open at the crack of 5AM everyday! Seating is a handful of booths and bar seating, much like any diner. Every person who has served me here has been pretty friendly and a real darlin’ to boot.
They have breakfast specials, weekdays until 11am. $ 2.50 for eggs, toast and the best hash browns in town. Can’t beat that!
