Future Is Clear

What I think everyone needs to realize is that Clear Internet is essentially a longer-​distance WiFi connection. Clear Internet uses what is known as «WIMAX», which can push Internet connectivity out to approximately 31 miles. The current WiMAX revision provides up to 40 Mbit/​s, which is blazingly fast! However, the IEEE is working on approving 802.16m (to be deployed for market consumption sometime in 2012), which could offer up to 1 Gbps speeds — which would be insanely fast… in fact many times faster than any current wired Internet connection used in a traditional residential setting, as well as most businesses.
With this out of the way (and hopefully front-​and-​center of the minds of all readers), proximity to the source of the signal is key. More obstructions; more distance = less speed. Less obstructions, closer to the signal source = more speed.
As «Chris d» mentioned, I too had the same experience after ordering Clear Internet. However, 2 days into using this service, my download speeds have jumped up to 9.32 Mbps, and upload speeds have crept up to around 0.82 Mbps. I should add that I am approximately 1 mile away from one of the closest access points located close to the intersections of Harlem Ave. and North Ave. The connection is not direct line-​of-​site, so in other words, I do have plenty of «things» obstructing a direct wireless connection to the access point located at the aforementioned location.
I should also add that I was able to connect my D-​Link wireless router to the RJ-​45 port on the back of the Clear Modem and didn’t have to make a single modification to the settings in my home router. Within an hour, I had all of the devices I and my family use to connect to the net. In addition, I am also pushing my Internet connection to one specific location in my residence using two Netgear XAV101 POE’s, which essentially pushes an Ethernet signal across electrical wiring.
In sum, I am a very, VERY, very happy camper!

P. S. If you do your homework and have the right environmental setting (considering the things I’ve mentioned above), there is no reason anyone with a half decent computer can’t have the same experience, or better!

I have to agree with all the negative reviews. Their customer is terrible, the only thing they are good at is deny deny deny. I Goto sign up for service, was told no problem, you’ll get an email once it’s activated in about 1 – 2 hours… I don’t know why it would take so long a modern cellular device. But ok, after two hours nothing call back, they now need me to fax in my receipt to prove I bought the modem. Thanks for the accusation… Fax it in nothing. Go home resign up for service works in 5 minutes. Check credit card statement, they charged $ 240 for first month, and activation. Hmmm it was only supposed to be $ 60. Call back was told it was just authorizations. Check credit card statement, there still sending in multiple requests for authorization. Good thing it was connected to my checking account, and I don’t need food, gas, or pay bills. I’m so canceling your stupid service after another ISP comes in this weekend.

After the first month with clear mobile I went out and got home edition. When I called the sales rep, I informed her I had Clear mobile and I wanted the home modem. Instead she gave me another mobile and a home The home unit worked for two weeks with decent down speed. After the second week the modem could not make connection for more than three hours. I returned it by the first month. I needed Internet for work, pay the bills and stuff so I kept the mobile unit as backup.
Conclusion: Home sucks. Clear reps sucks. kept the mobile.

I can’t speak for the negative reviewers here, and I’m sure their experiences were negative (they certainly sound that way).
Maybe im just lucky, but my experience has been good.
Here is a breakdown of how it went:
— I ordered a Clear Spot 4G on a Tuesday
— Package arrived on Wednesday via FedEx
— I brought package inside and opened it
— I plugged the Clear Spot into the wall to charge and turned it on
— After turning it on, I placed it by a window
— The indicator lights on the Clear Spot glowed solid to show that it is connected
— I fired up my laptop and connected to it with WiFi
— I was redirected to Clear’s setup page
— I entered some info, agreed to some terms, and clicked «ok»
— I’ve been using the Internet like I normally do on any internet connection, and getting consistent speeds of about 6.5 megs down and 0.85 megs up.
Everything works perfectly with no issues.
After reading the negative reviews, I’m a bit worried that my house is going to explode or something since everything with the Clear Spot is going wonderfully!

Every now and again, moderately smart people make extremely dumb choices. My signing up for Clear Home Internet was one of such times. I should’ve known that these 4G WiMax nonsense was exactly just that: rubbish.
The nice girl who signed me up at the Michigan Ave Store, forgot to tell me that I couldn’t return the equipment to the store in the event I didn’t like the service. I’d have to call the toll free number and have them mail me a shipping label that I’d have to go out of my way to a UPS and drop off the modem. So much for convenience. On and the «restocking fee» of $ 40.00 is billed to your account when you close.
«Put the modem close to the window… for better reception» the East Indian Technical guru advised. Don’t bother.
Steer CLEAR off these morons.

Horrible service. Internet drops all the time. The customer service for this company is a joke and it seems next to impossible to talk with anyone. I plan to just end my plan, end the service and go with ATT

I really wanted to use Clear. I bought the 4 G Hotspot and it didn’t work. I exchanged it for another and it still would not connect to their towers. Apparently I live half a mile from two of their towers here in Chicago, and it still doesn’t work. Needless to say, I am returning this device as well and getting a refund. I am very disappointed.

If it was possible to give clear a negative rating, I would! We got clear home, and 2 clear usb modems. Our download speed was a constant .35-.45Mbps!!! Our ping was 200 – 300! Was the hell?!? We were in constant contact with them, trying to get everything figured out. There customer service is awefull! After being bounced around from person to person we finally go someone with some real knowledge about what was going on. We were told that there was a problem with the local tower and that they would send someone and get back to us within 3 wks. A month later and no call, and the same download speeds. Finally after we call bookoos of times, we get someone again. We are told the same thing. This has now been going on for 2 and a half months. Finally we decide to just cancel and go with Comcast. And now the real trouble begins. After being told 4 times that someone new has sent out the UPS labels, we get a competent person who actually sends them out. We send back there equipments, were told that the money would be returned to our account, and our account closed. This did not happen. It took 4 calls and multiple people telling us that it is done for it too actually happen. After a MONTH of returning the equipment that we got our money returned (one of these times they just credited our CLEAR account and not our bank account!) AND NOW WE COME TO TODAY! 2 months after we think everything is taken care of and this God awefull business relationship is over, and we notice that more money has been withdrawn from our account by CLEAR!!! 1 more phone call, and we learn that they re-​opened our home modem account for NO reason and started charging us again for it! It has been a nightmare! Poor download speeds, poor customer service, quick to take out our money and slow slow slow to return it! If you want good internet, just sell your soul to comcast or att!
