Guise Chic

My stylist Dottie has moved from k. paige salon to this establishment, so this is a review about my stylist versus the store. I’m glad that Dottie made the move because the salon is modern and edgy without being pretentious. The product they use here is very high quality as my color lasted a lot longer than having my hair color done at k. paige. I’m very picky with my hair being Korean, and Dottie is the first non-​Asian stylist I would trust to make my hair look wonderful.

Petit update:
One afternoon, I decided to quit hoarding my amazing stylist/​friend all to myself and let my boyfriend go in for a haircut with him. He had been sporting the same Marine Corps high and tight for 6 years and was ready for something to show off his personality. Enter Travis at Guise Chic.
Boyfriend decided it was time for a hawk. I rolled my eyes and thought 1) «RU-​FI-​OHHH» and 2) «I guess we should start looking for places in Bucktown…» I was so, so wrong. This damn thing is the Justin Timberlake of mohawks. Smooth, edgy, playful, classy. I practically hear «My Love» every time I see his hair now. Yum.
Just another demonstration of Travis’ versatility as a stylist, and another shameless plug from a loyal (and thankful) customer.

I love the philosophy and set up of this place. Laid back atmosphere, and a one stop shop to look great. Stylish clothes, great haircuts, and awesome service.
I never considered myself particular about my haircut, and I’ve gotten it cut at ten different places in Chicago. This is the only place that stuck. And since I’ve been to Guise I had to get my haircut once while traveling on business and realized I’m now very particular.
Great atmostphere too, big screens everywhere. Individual TV at each station. Rachel is amazing. Very laid back, and gives a great haircut. Plus you can come in between haircuts and get a ‘clean-​up.’ They hit the back and sides, shave your neck and you’re good to go. If you get the platinum membership the clean-​ups and haircuts are included for a year. Plus discounts on the clothes.
This is the other area Guise-​Chic excels in. Really stylish clothes, they know what looks good together and what looks good on you. It’s designer stuff, so it’s a bit expensive, but you know that it will look great when you wear it out on your date. They don’t push and have always steered me in the right direction. I’ve gotten more complements on the clothes from here than anywhere.
Quality that’s well worth the price!

I recently went to Megan Anne at Guise Chic for a highlight and cut at the suggestion of my co-​worker. She was FANTASTIC. Very fun to chat with and she really knew how to work with my stick straight hair. She also expertly brightened up my highlighted/​low-​lighted look. The only con is that w/​o my «new client» 25% discount, I may not be able to afford to go back. :(

To give some background, the same person cut my hair for most of my life, so when I moved to Chicago and had to find someone new, I was quite apprehensive. As a guy, it can be difficult to find a good haircut if you desire more than a bald barber using some clippers.
The staff is courteous and makes you feel comfortable. The people there are all nice and while they are all attractive and stylish, they are not pretentious at all. They offer you water and coffee and take care of you from the moment you enter to the moment you leave.
Travis cut my hair and he was awesome! He did not try to force his opinions on me or make heavy handed suggestions, he talked to me as an equal and then used his expertise to give me a fantastic haircut. He was very knowledgeable and he was enjoyable to talk to while he cut my hair. The cut was $ 45 and it was worth every penny. I would highly recommend Guise Chic to any girl or guy that needs a haircut or color or whatever else. The person that recommended Guise to me was a woman, so I know that they have very happy female customers too!

Heather has given me the best haircuts of my life. Also, she has never pressured me to purchase anything, but when I ask for recommendations on a hair product she never steers me wrong. I’ve never shopped here, but there is a cute selection of clothing and accessories.

Let me preface this by saying I’ve had my hair cut by the same person for over 10 years. I’m paranoid and psychotic when it comes to people cutting my hair. Since I couldn’t bring my hair dresser with me to Chicago, I had to find a brand new person. Yikes.
However, my friend suggested I go to Guise Chic to see either Heather or Megan Anne. We went together so my friend got Heather and I got Megan Anne. Megan Anne is so cute and you can tell she really enjoys cutting hair.
Now on to the haircut. OMG. I barely had to tell her what I wanted (Charlotte Gainsbourg, please), and I got the cutest bangs and layers. She will now be doing my hair for the next decade, cuz that’s how I roll.

Alright, a salon and a boutique all rolled into one. What could be more fantastic, right?
My stylist, for one. Heather Engleman is awesome. I’ve followed her around this fair city from salon to salon, and now that she’s settled on Guise Chic I couldn’t be happier!
The only downside is that parking can sometimes be a pain in this neighborhood, but that doesn’t send me running for the hills. The haircuts tend to be a little expensive, but what haircuts aren’t these days unless your’e a card carrying Supercuts fan? Besides which, I only make a visit a few times a year, so the price doesn’t bother me so much.
The guys will like this place because there are televisions at every station — all sports, all the time. The ladies have tv’s too… but eh, unless I’m getting my hair done on a Thursday when Grey’s Anatomy is on I could care less. I spend most of my time gossiping with Heather anyway.

I like that they don’t pressure you to buy hair products! Got a good haircut, and a nice dress. It’s not any more expensive than other places, and the sales people are very nice (they bring you things that they think will look good, they don’t just wait for you to ask for a different size, they double-​check in the back for things, even if they are pretty sure it’s not there).

Get thee to Guise|Chic, Ladies and Gents.
They’ve got a great space and great styles for both men and women and their (not-​so-​well-​kept) secret is that they do both clothing AND hair.
Definitely full service, on trend, and the best spot to shop on Halsted.

I have been here several times when it was just «Guise».
Since my hair stylist left for NYC, I’ve been struggling to find the perfect person to cut my hair. Guise was offering a special to their Platinum members (my husband) so I made an appointment for a hair cut. My stylist, Alicia, was great. We discussed a game plan (trim, freshen up my layers) and she washed and styled my hair. She asked if I wanted a blow-​out and made it super straight. She discussed the products that she used but wasn’t pushy.
My appointment ran over so I didn’t get to check out the actual merchandise. Since it ran over, my husband did find a shirt and was able to model it for me while I was in the chair getting styled. It was super convenient and fun!

This review is for the salon… and mainly Travis. I have followed him here, because Travis an amazing stylist!!! He does highlights like no other! I have curly hair, and he styles it perfectly!!! Also, he is a damn sweety! And everyone there was so nice!!! PLEASE GO SEE TRAVIS! He will make you look and feel gorgeous!

I went to this Store Opening and the clothes looked amazing. Great colors and textures. Very cool interior and surprising to find a salon in the back of the store! This is certainly a one-​stop-​shop! Try this place!

I was here last night for their Grand Opening party. My friend gets invitations to seemingly every free event in Chicago, so luckily I was able to get in w/​his RSVP. After nearly pulling my teeth out in an attempt to find parking, I walked into a sea of well dressed guys and girls. I honestly couldn’t tell whether I was in a club or at a clothing store… It was crazy packed! There were hors doeuvre plates scattered throughout and an area in the back where they were serving beer, wine, and pomegranate martinis.
As I made my way back to get a drink, I overheard this trixie w/​her friend go ‘like oh my god, oh my god, oh my god!!!’ I quickly remembered how glad I was to live in Wicker Park and how much I disliked the clientel in Lincoln Park, although I will admit there quite a few hotties at the event last night :)
I honestly couldn’t even tell you how the clothing selection was. There were so many people it was hard to move about and get a good look. I do remember peeling the price tag back on this sweatshirt looking top, and it was a cool $ 199!!! Yikes, I guess you have to pay top dollar if you want to buy clothes in LP. I couldn’t help but wonder why anyone would pay that much money when you could probably get something equivalent at target for $ 10.
My friends and I ended up staying in a corner near the back, amply close to the delicious pom martinis which we drank plenty of. They have these barber style chairs where guys can get their salon fix while watching plasma tv… how ritzy. All things said and done, I would probably never come here if it weren’t for the free event. Prices and attitude are WAY too high, I think i’ll stick to finding some grungy lookin clothing in WP!

Very meticulous, the people there give you their utmost attention. For a college student though, it was a little too much.

Went during the day to get the 25% off deal, which helps on the price. Megan was very nice, knowledgeable, and my hair turned out well. However, without a guarantee saying my hair will look so good that no less than 3 hot girls will want to randomly make out with me, all before I get back to the train station, it’s not worth $ 45.
And they lose a star because I was never offered this free beer everyone talks about. Plus, the TVs were only showing Magnum PI (good show, but I had seen that episode).

The Guise concept is innovative. Add an upscale clothing store to a men’s salon, however the staff seemed a little more grunge than hip/​chic. It’s much more a midwestern salon meets high-​end clothing store than anything else. Overall the service and styling is good and gets three stars for trying hard.

I’ve been going her for about a year now and really quite enjoy it.
The transition from the ten minute cut at Supercuts (with clippers) to a real haircut was a little difficult at first. I was used to a quick stop and getting an adequate result. I’ve come to realize that ten minutes is far too short for a real haircut and the result was never adequate.
Now that I’ve been going to Guise, I think I’ve become more discerning when it comes to what I do or do not find acceptable for haircuts and my hair. The cuts take longer (like 45 minutes), but it never looks like it was cut with clippers and I’ve finally found someone willing to help me grow the comfort zone for my hair. I can try new things and have confidence it will come out alright.
The staff is very friendly and helpful. You can find all sorts of conversation going on at Guise. The last time I was in it included the recent election, the vast, coldness of the new TV on the Radio album, comparing and contrasting tattoos that «mean something» and those that look cool and the effects of giving up a vegan diet. The clothes are cool, and more importantly, come with good advice about their ability to compliment your personal style.
It seems that few of my friends are really ready for that kind of experience yet, but I continue to tell them about it from time to time due to the success I’ve had.

After years of sitting on uncomfortable salon couches while waiting for the woman in my life to finish a hair appointment, I’m happy to find a place that has almost zero space for your female friend to wait. Seriously — grab a beer (they’ll offer you one), park it in front of SportsCenter, and make chit-​chat with Kelly while she cuts your hair. (I’m sure the other stylists are good, too, but Kelly was excellent.) Probably a more expensive hair experience than most guys will want, but worth it, and still cheaper than other big cities.

Guise is such a neat concept that it’s a wonder something like this didn’t originate in New York or L.A. It kind of reinvents the whole idea of getting a haircut because there’s so much other stuff going on (free drinks, TV screens, clothing store).
Having transplanted from Manhattan, i didn’t think Guise’s prices were particularly expensive for men’s haircuts. If you can work your schedule into going in on a weekday early afternoon, it’s considerably cheaper than other times of the week (i think i saved $ 10).
I got a great haircut from Rachel, who knew exactly what to do without me being to able ot articulate it. I bought some hair goop which costs $ 28 but it lasts a year so i figure that’s a wise investment.
I can’t really address the clothes because they are out of my price range… but for those who can afford them, they were pretty stylish.
