Inn of Chicago, an Ascend Hotel Collection Member

I feel like all the negative reviews on this place are really petty. I paid 68 a night after booking through Expedia & it was worth every penny! It’s in a great location there’s a forever 21, Gap, among others less than a block away. Lots of places to eat surrounding. It’s in a quiet portion of downtown which is really nice. About a 15 minute walk from Navy pier as well. We took Ubers to get around to the tourist attractions & nothing was over 11 dollars even to the farther destinations.
The room was great. A little small but super clean. We were in room 522. No good views of the city but oh well. The beds are comfy. Very clean. No bed bugs. Bathroom is also tiny but it’s clean & to me that’s all th matters. TV is great. They have a little clock with has an aux cable so you can jam out while you’re getting ready.
Wifi isn’t free. But it wasn’t a big deal. The only thing that sucked was the staff. Not friendly at all. We literally stood at the front desk waiting for the girl to look up from her computer to acknowledge us. No hello or can I help you. Not very helpful either in getting tips on the city. But that’s what your über driver is for lol
Overall would definitely stay here again!

Mixed reviews about this place, but here’s the rundown… If you are looking for convenience and location and don’t care much about the room itself this is the place for you!
Pros: location location location!!, nice lobby, reasonable prices, nice staff
Cons: no free wifi, small rooms, smaller bathrooms, old, limited TV channels, their «queen beds» are full size beds, cardboard sheets, no view (at least from our room on the 16^th floor)
All in all, we came for a quick weekend trip, knew we weren’t going to spend much time in the room and just wanted to be close to everything. This place was absolutely perfect for that! So just think about your goals for the trip and what’s important for your family.

This is one of the worst hotels I’ve stayed in. It seems to be a nice place to stay because they have redone the lobby and mezzanine, but once you get to the rooms, they are small and cramped. It is an older building, so there are some challenges, but the carpeting and furniture in the room are old and though there are in decent condition, they do not match the look of the lobby or the quality of nearby hotels. The hotel staff was not helpful, we ordered brunch from a nearby restaurant and they could not send the delivery person up to the room, which is fine, but we were told in a rude tone. When going downstairs to meet the delivery person, the elevators were very slow and by the time we arrived in the lobby the delivery man had left, and the woman at the front desk was neither apologetic nor helpful in trying to find him. She told us in a rude and flippant tone that the delivery man was waiting for us in the corner, and she was not busy helping any other customers, so she had no reason to have dismissed us. It is as if hospitality is not a part of this hotel’s philosophy. They do not keep basic amenities like phone chargers at the front desk, which most hotels provide free of charge. Lastly, there is poor ventilation in the rooms and no fan in the bathroom which means that if you spend any time in the hotel room you are likely to be uncomfortable and smelling some rather gross smells. Honestly, the worst part was the lack of hospitality, if you are paying to stay in a «boutique inn» then you should treat guests well. But I will say, the inn has a great marketing strategy because it is little better than a motel in disguise.

I would avoid this hotel if you could. My husband and I booked a «sky suite». There was nothing «suite» about this room. The bed is the exact opposite of the big comfy hotel bed you’d expect, as it’s a Murphy bed.
When we arrived in the room, under neath the bed was a hard crunchy dirty wash cloth, candy wrappers, and an orange. When I called the front desk, they seemed to care very little, noting the cleaning crew must not «have done a good job». OK? We were also missing our TV remote and had to call twice over 45 minutes to have one brought up. We received one with masking tape labeled «good» and although we kept seeing commercials to push the guide button to rent a movie, our replacement remote could barely change a channel.
It felt like a Super8. For $ 160, you can find MUCH better in the city.

Clean, quiet, economical. TV channel selection could have been better. Tiny elevators, but there are three. Sure, I’d rather stay at the Palmer House, but I have few complaints about the Inn of Chicago. Except for the fact that there’s a Shake Shack just a few blocks away. I think I gained 7 pounds over the weekend.

I wanted to like this place, I really did. However, I feel like it’s a bit of a stretch giving this 3 stars, but oh well. I got a groupon to stay here that let me spend a Saturday and Sunday night in December for about $ 120/​night tax included. We stayed in room 1022.
When you first get here, it looks like a 2+ or 3 star hotel. However, once you get to your room, you see it’s just a 2 star place. The lobby is nice. The elevator is small and your first intro to the real Inn of Chicago. When I got to my floor, it smelled of smoke. When I signed in, I agreed that I wouldn’t smoke in my room, but after breathing the air on the 10^th floor, I wondered if anyone would notice. Fortunately, the air in my room was much cleaner. The room was average in size, but with a microscopic bathroom. The room itself was alright, but like much else at this hotel, poorly maintained. The bathroom looked like it hadn’t gotten any improvements in 30 years or more. The windows seemed small, and the tv had a limited number of channels, plus it was glued to the dresser, which I normally don’t care about, but this prevented my from moving it back and putting something in the dresser in front of the tv. The walls are thin and one morning I was woken up by someone in the hall talking on their phone. There’s only wifi in the lobby, and although there’s a rooftop deck on the 22^nd floor, it’s very basic, and 5 minutes there is enough. For all these shortcomings, my room was fairly nice. I’m sure when it was new it looked great, and it’s not that far off that today. The price was great and the location couldn’t be better — 1 block off Michigan Avenue right in the heart of downtown. You are minutes away from shopping and all the excitement downtown has to offer. Given that for something without these shortcomings in the same area will probably cost $ 150−200/night, I was happy with this. But given that’s the going rate, perhaps you get what you pay for.

Let me tell you what’s up about this hotel. I had a great experience and there was no problem at al.
I scored a great deal on Groupon about this hotel. I went on a weekend getaway with my boyfriend and we already had a hotel that we choose and it was pretty far from the downtown area, but I saw this deal last minute and I KNEW this was the hotel for ME!
Check in time is at 3PM, typical (I work at a hotel) and my flight landed and I arrived by 11AM. I talked to the front desk and he said it would be another hour till our room was done which was perfectly fine.
They offered us to hold our bags until it’s time to check in.
We came back to check in and the front desk Juan was great! Props to him, very respectful and answered our questions you go Juan! Anyways we read and heard about the wifi and how it cost money so we talked to him about it.
EVERYONE ALWAYS COMPLAINS ABOUT THE WIFI, BUT ASK ABOUT IT FIRST! I’m sorry, but anyone that has just paid for the wifi did they actually talked to the front about it? Juan was great! He said if I wanted to enroll in their email or program I could get complementary wifi. Again. You go Juan. You the real MVP.
Moving on! Walked to the elevator and it was so small, but hey that’s okay it’s just an elevator. Loved the mirrors. Checked myself out in them every time we went in them.
Went to our room and it was pretty nice. seems like a typical room I suggest for single and couples only. Room was small for families.
They had room service! But we didn’t use it, but that’s cool that they give it to you.
The tv was kind of confusing first, but we got the hang of it. I wish there was like a paper copy of the TV guide.
Go check the roof top!!! It’s really beautiful!
All these cups in the room in random spots. I also couldn’t find the ice machine. I really didn’t see signs.
Also get the vending machine checked on the 19^th floor. I couldn’t put coins in and it wouldn’t take my money.
The major downfall to this hotel room was the toilet. It didn’t have a fan? When you do your business anyone sitting on the bed could hear EVERYTHING and then it smelled afterwards.
I guess if you’re also a light sleeper than this hotel isn’t for you. The sirens were always going off.

OVERALL 100% I loved this hotel. It was near the shopping areas and there was so many restaurants to choose from. I am going to recommend it to my friends and family. This hotel was worth it!

This hotel looks appealing from the lobby but the rooms are in need of some major updating! My room was quite spacious but the furniture is definitely out of date. The bed mattress had no support but the pillows were comfortable. Overall, it was an average hotel at an amazing location in downtown Chicago. If you’re looking for an affordable stay in a great part of Chicago, this hotel is for you. If you’re looking for premium hotel, this hotel is not the one for you.

Don’t go here if you like getting robbed. I booked this hotel for one of my employees and she was unable to check in the day of because of a delayed flight and Hurricane Patricia. The next morning she called from the airport at 4 am to make sure she was still able to check in. The hotel then proceeded to say that she was a no show and they gave her room away??? Who does that? They left her stranded at the airport with no place to go!
The next day I argued with the hotel stating that my employee did not even use their hotel. They proceeded to charge my credit card for two nights stay even though nobody set foot in their hotel. This hotel has the audacity to charge my card even though they gave away the room and not allowing anyone my employee to check in. This is highway robbery! This hotel is desperate for money and does not know one thing about customer service or business ethics!
Stay away from this sleeze bag hotel at all costs. It’s not worth it!

Stayed here after two night at the Kinzie. Wow talk about a let down from the night before. The rooms are small and dingy. Ive stayed at motel 6 with bigger bathrooms. 150 a night and you can’t even get free wifi. The management was very accommodating to a mix up with my groupon deal and the staff was just as helpful with an early check in. The sky terrace is pretty cool and the location of the hotel is ideal. Another lame thing is you have to get car out of parking by 3 after checkout (as opposed to 6 like other places) overall it’s not bad, but you can do so much better for around the same coin

Really a two star hotel in a five star location.
My room was no frills, a king bed in which dwarfed the room. The table and furniture, including the bathroom mirror is scuffed up and stained. Supposedly this was the «modern» room which is upgraded … I can’t imagine what the other rooms would be like. The room and hall smell stale, and if you look for them, there are clues (the dirty wall, door that fails to shut without a pull) signs that this is aging hotel in need of a full renovation.
Wi-​Fi was inexpensive but costs $ 5 for 24 hours at 2 mbps. There is a decent gym facility with serviceable but aging equipment on the third floor.
All told, the lobby and roof top lounge are major assets to the hotel since they look modern and nice. The best part of this hotel is it’s central location and affordability. If you’re on a budget and don’t mind being a bit RATCHET then it is perfect for your stay.

The 1 star is ONLY for location and the roof top terrace. Don’t leave valuables of any type in your room. It was probably my own fault, but I left my purse in my room for about an hour and a half while I visited another room. I came back to my beds being made and $ 90 missing from my wallet. Complaints to the management feel on deaf ears, I’m still waiting for a response over 2 weeks later. Also, the rooms were outdated and filthy… And it wasn’t just my room. I stayed with a wedding party, and there were approximately 10 rooms of people, and not a single room was acceptable.

I chose to stay here to attend a conference at the nearby Marriott instead of staying in the Marriott, in order to save a hundred bucks per night. It wasn’t worth it. For this price tier, and a hotel that purports to be a luxury hotel, I’ve never been in a worse hotel.
— My room had a sour smell and few amenities.
— No fridge, not even a plastic bag for my laundry.
— TV had scant channels, no HBO.
— The gym is a joke. A few broken machines and some weights.
— They make you pay for wifi in your room. But at least there is free wifi in the lobby! Which has uncomfortable seating and no tables to work on.
— Only three tiny elevators, each of which can really only fit four or five people unless you want to get personal with the people around you. Have had to wait for several elevators before being able to squeeze into one to take me to my room.

Go elsewhere.
We arrived early and ask if they had a room that was available but the man behind the desk said that’s there was nothing he can do and to just wait till the appropriate check-​in at 3:00. I have always had hotels provided accommodations with checking in early but I have never been treated with such rudeness before. He just seemed so irrigated but even asking the question.
Not worth the price at all. False advertisement, room very very cramped for a two bed with a supposedly «roll away couch» that was never an option according to the hotel. So now one us will have to sleep on the floor. There were holes in the pillow cases, stains on mattress. The hallways were clean nor clear, there was carts and bags left outside our hallway.
We arrived and once finally getting a room, we don’t have enough towels since they only provide enough for one person, forget about finding an outlet to change your phone and other electronic devices, we needed up unplugging the two lamps in the room. Also WiFi is not included with your hotel stay and will have to pay $ 15+ to use there WiFi and if you don’t (we didn’t pay that ridiculous price) you won’t be able to access any internet at all unless you have your own hotspot.
If I could do this all over again I would book elsewhere and pay any price for better customer service and getting the accommodations that we paid for.
Please be careful and double check what you have booked when staying at this hotel and also make sure you talk to a live person when you do this. Its also wouldn’t hurt to check out the room first.

Stayed here for a couple of days for a business trip! This was the only okay-​ish hotel that was within my budget, and I was generally pretty satisfied.
Gotta say though, the lobby is a loooot more modern than the actual rooms.
I had a bed with a queen size bed– no frills really, just a bed, AC, TV and your coffee maker (Which was a bit dusty. ughh). Bathroom was fairly spacious, came with amenities.
Knocking off a point because they didn’t have my room ready at check-​in– I tried to check in at around 4:30pm, but I didn’t actually get the keys to my room until a little before 6pm. But with that said, the front desk were very nice and friendly.
I would recommend this hotel if you’re just there to sleep. Very simple and you get what you pay for.

I read a few reviews and I think they are being way to harsh. Personally I think the location is the most important think and this hotel has a great location. Its in the magnificent mile and in the middle of it. The staff was nice and they have a little bar if you want to kill time. The hotel does need to be remodeled, it needs TLC but for the price and location was perfect. I would recommend this hotel.

Location 5 stars. Then things go down from there.
Small elevators so leave early. Hallways are rough rooms are rougher. Very out of date and even a deep cleaning wouldn’t help. Surprising as the lobby is nice.
Great water pressure. Small tubs. Toilet feels like it’s a foot off the deck and you’ve not been given approval for a flyby. Eject mailman!
Bed was ok. Lots of pillows on my king. Other room furniture bad. Corner chair is rock hard and the desk chair is bolt upright with maybe a bit of forward lean. Ended up just using the foot rest as a desk chair.
No in room safe. Basic cable. No in room alarm clock so plan for a wake up call or set your phone. All the outlets in my room were covered by immobile furniture so the desk lamp plug is all you get.
Ambiance for me was ultra loud ac unit from followed by 4 am backup beeping in the alley below my 11^th floor room.

Nope nope nope.
Stay away. BEDBUG CENTRAL! Check the bedbug registry!
There was also blood on the floor in my room.
Our company had 26 of us here for a conference and every single person had a complaint and there was trash in the hallways.

Decent place to stay if you plan on not spending much time in the room. Good location a block away from Michigan Ave shopping.
The lobby is pretty nice but the hallways are pretty dated. Room is smaller than your standard hotel room. It’s obvious this is an older building and not in the cool vintage kind of way.

We stayed at the Inn of Chicago over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. We arrive in Chicago before 11 AM. We got to the hotel and there was no room available, but we did know the check in time was 3pm.
We were able to leave our bags at the bell desk, although the person attending the bell desk was not available for about 15 minutes.
We return to our hotel after walking around the city and having lunch, and the process was quick and easy. The hotel is nice and laid out, of all the elevators are extremely small. We were located on the 12^th floor and there are 22 floors in the building.
The room itself was small but clean. I’m on the smallest rooms I’ve been but it is a very large city so I expected that. It was smaller than 2 rooms in. Yo that I had been in, both 3 star hotels.
The bed was very comfortable and the shower had good pressure. The bathroom is tiny, however.
The hotel had a skydeck with some nice views, and a lot of information in the lobby including a flight tracker for both Chicago airports.
The rate was great, courtesy of a bid on Priceline. Two nights were less than $ 140.
